Hey guys, first post. So I started playing pokemon when the third gen came out and have played almost one iteration of every game in the 3rd and 4th gen (Ruby, Emerald, FireRed, Pearl, Platinum, and SoulSilver) and a few of the Ranger games but have fell off since then. But I like to consider myself a huge fan of the series so here it is:

I want to play through all the pokemon games but don't know how to go about doing it. Obviously I want to go through the core handheld canon, but I also want to go through some of the spinoffs, such as the Dungeons and the Rangers, and maybe even some of the Gamecube ones. The systems I own are the Gameboy SP, DSi, Wii, and WiiU.

What I was thinking off was going through them chronologically from Gen 1 to 6, which would allow me to see the games grow as the series progresses, and then playing the spinoffs as they came out along with the handhelds.I don't know what I would do for the first two gens as the save batteries would die eventually but I would be using a combo of the GBA, borrowing a friends DS to dual port with a GBA game and DS Game, and getting a 'new' 3DS to go through the remaining four generations.

But one of the issues I would have is that I would want to complete every game fully, so I have no idea how I would get event exclusive pokemon without some type of glitch. Also, I feel like it would get sort of slow because some of the games (Ahem.. Red and Blue) are almost identical games except for a few different pokemon. This problem would be reduced as games after gen 3 have slightly different storylines and this would speed things up. And I haven't played any games after gen 4 and the nostalgia that would come from playing Omega Ruby (because Ruby was my first game) would also help speed things up! ALSO, gen 1 has no running shoes!!!

Let me know what you guys think, and let me know how you guys would go about this! Also, let me know if there's an alternate path that you guys would take (i.e. playing Red, skipping Blue, and then playing Yellow, because Blue and Red are almost identical. But then how would I get Meowth or Magmar?!). Also, let me know what games I should play in the series besides the main series, the rangers, and the dungeons (I probably will try to play XD as well). Thanks guys!

P.S. To get trade-exclusive pokemon, I would probably borrow a friends system for trading for gens 3-6.

I'm going through something like this with a friend right now, so maybe our guide could help give you some pointers! Of course, since you'd be doing this undertaking alone it'll be longer than our route, but see how you like this suggestion.

If "complete the game fully" means "complete the Pokedex and the story", here's how each generation might go:

Gen I: Have Red and Blue, one of which you'll designate as the "replay" cart. The replay cart will, after having run through the game once (and traded version-exclusives to the other) re-run the game up to Celadon City. On the re-run, use the Mew Glitch in Cerulean to get Mew, have the replay use the starter not chosen on either initial run, and evolve Eevee into the evolution not chosen on either run. Keep these files, as they'll be very helpful in the next gen.

Gen II: Have Gold,Silver and Crystal. Once the Time Machine is unlocked, trade over the uncatchable Kanto mons from Red and Blue. You don't have one at the moment, but an N64 and a copy of Stadium 2 work wonders for this! Celebi can be hatched in Crystal via a glitch, so when the Crystal file reaches the Ice Path you can add Celebi to your dex.

Gen III: This will be the trickiest. To fully complete the dex in Gen 3 you'll need not only the five handheld games but also Colosseum and XD:GoD. Sad to say, but you can't get the Mythical Pokemon Deoxys in this generation without hacks, as the events no longer happen. Mew can theoretically be caught if you're lucky to have an Old Sea Map. Jirachi and Celebi are available to you only if you're European or Japanese, respectively (thanks to Pokemon Channel and the Colosseum Bonus Disc)

Gen IV: You'll need an original DS or DS Lite to complete the dex in this generation. IIRC, dual-slot mode and Pal Park have to be used to get some Gen I-III mons into the Gen IV games. Manaphy will require Ranger and Mew requires My Pokemon Ranch. Hacks or a Japanese cart with the Surf glitch will be necessary for Shaymin and Darkrai, and Arceus is flat out unobtainable short of hacks. Explorers of Sky is a game I'd consider among the top ten games of all time, so if you want to try a Mystery Dungeon game, play through this one.

Gen V: Without two DSes, nearly every single previous-generation Pokemon will be unavailable for your dex in these games. The Mythical Pokemon don't have any new obtaining methods in this generation either, although you can shorten the time required to get Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Lugia and Ho-Oh with the Dream Radar 3DS game, which is also needed to get the Therian formes of the genies IIRC.

Gen VI: With Poke Bank, assuming you completed your Dex as much as possible in the previous gen you can send all of them over to one of these games, drastically lowering your time spent. Afterwards it's all a matter of playing through the four games. The Hoenn starter you didn't pick can be obtained via GTS, so no need for replay carts here. Deoxys can now be caught thanks to OR/AS, but Arceus still is out of reach, and Diancie's unobtainable without hacking thanks to its' Ribbon.

Sorry for that massive wall of text. Hope that helps you out in figuring out your path through the games. I probably forgot something in all of this, and I apologize if so. Good luck!

Thanks! Any tips on other games I should play in the series or if i should trim this whole endeavor down a little bit? Any advice is appreciated

Personally, I would suggest only playing through the core series games first, and then the spinoffs at a later date. So my list would look something like this:

Pokémon Red Version (JPN), Pokémon Green Version, Pokémon Blue Version (JPN)
Pokémon Stadium (JPN)
Pokémon Red Version, Pokémon Blue Version, Pokémon Yellow Version
Pokémon Stadium
Pokémon Gold Version, Pokémon Silver Version, Pokémon Crystal Version
Pokémon Stadium 2
Pokémon Ruby Version, Pokémon Sapphire Version, Pokémon Emerald Version
Pokémon FireRed Version, Pokémon LeafGreen Version
Pokémon Colosseum
Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness
Pokémon Ranger
Pokémon Diamond Version, Pokémon Pearl Version, Pokémon Platinum Version
Pokémon: Battle Revolution
Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia
Pokémon HeartGold Version, Pokémon SoulSilver Version
Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs
Pokémon Black Version, Pokémon White Version
Pokémon Black Version 2, Pokémon White Version 2
Pokémon X, Pokémon Y
Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire

That's a lot of Pokémon to play, so I'd leave it up to you whether or not you wanna deal with playing all of them. The Japanese games are tacked on there because they are different enough to be separate games, but I don't think I'd recommend you playing them on top of everything else. Kanto would be traveled around a total of 13 times throughout your marathon of these games if you include them, opposed to just 10 times without.

If you want to play through all the games, all you need is a Gameboy Advanced SP (lets you play Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen and Emerald), a DS Lite (lets you connect Gen. 3 to Gen. 4), a DSi (lets you play Gen. 5) and a 2DS (lets you play Gen. 6).

I have all four systems, plus a 3DS XL. I just need Yellow version and the Johto games. And to fix my SP's left and right buttons. LOL And another SP and a link cable so I can trade between the first three Gens.

What I would suggest is playing through Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, White, White 2 and Y. That seems to be the actual Pokémon Game canon.
