In the world of anime, Ninja Scroll has proven to be nearly universal in its appeal, and now Warner Bros. is looking to turn animated phenomenon into a live-action film. Watchmen screenwriter Alex Tse has been attached to write the script, while the film version will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Mad House – this according to Variety. Di Caprio is not planning to act in the film.

Ninja Scroll is the second anime that DiCaprio is looking to turn into a live-action film, as (also with Warner Bros.) his Appian Way has acquired the rights to turn Otomo’s Akira into a live action feature, in which he does plan to star.

Ninja Scroll follows Jubei, an enigmatic ninja who battles increasingly bizarre enemies as he moves closer to a confrontation with an old enemy who seeks to overthrow the government. Originally released in Japane in 1993, the film was written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. The Western version of the film was officially released in 1996. The film spawned a 13 episode animated series, and a sequel is classified as being "in production."

No dates or timeline was given for the live action version of the film.

Alright...I officially feel bad for anime fans. And, honestly, I don't see a live action Ninja Scroll being remotely good. It was crazy enough as an anime. Live action will ruin it.

I can see it now... a 15+ year old anime licensed and directed in the united states... I have to say that a live action adaptation of this movie done like this would just focus on the sexual and violent aspects of the movie. I don't see anything positive about this whatsoever.

Face? Meet keyboard. Ninja Scroll? Bend over: This won't be pleasant.

GET YOUR OWN GODDAMN IDEAS HOLLYWOOD!!

I bet Zac Effron will be cast as Jubei--I mean Justin.

There weren't enough wise cracking black sidekicks in this movie. Lets add some! What? some of the characters were bisexual? We'll have none of that!

"What? Bisexual male characters? We'll just cast women in their places because everyone loves lesbians!"

Well, who heads Dragonball? Is that WB as well?

Well, in alls fairness, Speed Racer was pretty good and pretty Faithful and that was WB. (But yeah, not enough Speed Racer fans left to pull the movie into a blockbuster) I dunno, at least DiCaprio seems like a fan of the series, usually fans that do the movies tend to be more faithful to the Originals.

I didn't like the source material much, so chances are I won't look into this.

Would be interesting to see if DiCaprio would really go as graphic as the animation was, however.

Well, I imagine both movies will be R rated (This and Akira), but yeah, I wondered the same thing...

What I liked about Ninja Scroll is how the story would stop so the audience could absorb the breath taking scenery. Movies just don't do that anymore. When was the last time you were watching a movie and the camera just stayed on the landcape for a minute?

If people stil cared about natural beauty we wouldn't be huring the Earth so badly.

My point is, that charm will probably be cut from the live action version.
