Warner Bros. Picks Up Bone Comic
Source: The Hollywood Reporter March 8, 2008

Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to "Bone," the acclaimed independent comic book series from artist Jeff Smith, says The Hollywood Reporter. Dan Lin will produce.

The fantasy series followed three cousins from the Bone family who are small, white and bald humanlike creatures with big noses. The trio are run out of their hometown and find themselves in a mysterious valley where they are separated and hunted by other creatures. They are taken in by a girl named Thorn and her grandmother, and find out that the valley is threatened by an evil force called the Lord of the Locusts.

The series ran irregularly from 1991-2004. Scholastic has been publishing the collected stories in graphic novel format since 2005, selling more than 1 million copies so far.

A decision on what kind of format "Bone" should take -- live-action or animated or both -- will be based on filmmaker meetings.

An animated version was in development at Nickelodeon Films but fell through, partly because Smith was displeased that the studio was aiming it for kids and wanted the film to include pop songs.

Since this series is one of the only American comics I can stand to read, I'm pretty excited.

That would be very cool. Don't know why that never occurred to me before.

I just can't imagine it being done in anything but traditional 2-D.

I think we can at least agree that CGI wouldn't be the way to go ^^;;

That'll be what they use though, because "that's whats in and what's hip and what all the kids like!"

Yeah :/

I remember seeing a poster for the Japanese dub of The Simpsons Movie that felt the need to specify that the movie was, in fact, a traditional 2D movie. Since I guess American animated movies are all assumed to be CGI these days.

They did that in America, too.

And I'm so fucking sick of "CGI Wise-Ass Animals Voiced By Misc Celeberties".

I.. I don't know what to say. I loved Bone, especially when I was younger. Though.. it's hard for me to picture this movie, I remember the series being all over the place. (About being cartoony, and then serious and dramatic, and then pretty violent.) I kind of wonder... because of that, how will they handle it.. I guess you can make a movie get away with a PG rating, but it seems so odd to me.

I am excited for it! I don't know, stop motion would probably look great... but it's hard for me to picture them making the people look well. I can picture it in both 2D and 3D, and I think I'd prefer one of those to Live Action. It's hard for me to not see this as being Cheesey if it were to be live action (or Live Action in a fashion like "Space Jam" or "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit")

Bone, to me, basically comes off as Lord of the Rings with Mickey (Fone), Donald (Phoney), and Goofy (Smiley) in place of the hobbits.

If the movie's not PG, then there's no way Smiley's keeping his cigars.

Anyone remember when the Smiley Bone action figure got re-released without the cigar?

Lol, actually I do thinking about it... I actually had those toys, lol. (really, I did love this series like Ninja Turtle as a little kid... I actually subscribed to that Disney Magazine to read these)

Well... I was trying to imply that I wonder if it'll be rated PG-13, but I pretty much think they'll force a PG rating however they can. It's kind of viewed as cool with the kids to be PG over G. I also wouldn't be surprised if major characters don't make their appearance. (Mainly, Smiley to be honest... he didn't appear until pretty late compared to the other main characters) I actually wouldn't be surprised if the move is just about Fone, Grandma, and Thorn. I'd love Phoney to be in it, he was my favorite character, but I don't think I ever get my hopes up for movies too much.
