Warner Bros. will turn anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel masterwork "Akira" into two live action feature films, the first of which is being fast tracked for release in summer 2009, reports Variety.

WB, which had the "Akira" rights several years ago, only to let them lapse and then recapture them in a spirited bidding battle, is planning a twin-bill that the filmmakers have described as Blade Runner meets City of God.

The studio has closed a seven-figure rights acquisition deal with Kodansha, and has set Ruairi Robinson to direct a script by Gary Whitta (Book of Eli). Andrew Lazar's Mad Chance will produce with Appian Way's Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson.

Each feature will be comprised of three of the books in Otomo's series. The drama takes place in "New Manhattan," a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago.

Robinson, an Irish helmer who has been Oscar-nominated for his short film and commercials work, is making his feature debut.

Even before a hit's been had, it appears live-action anime movies are the new hot item. Between Street Fighter (I guess that's technically a video game movie, but still), Dragonball, Speed Racer, the long-standing talks of a Voltron movie, and now Akira, I wonder what could POSSIBLY be next.

It has a chance to be better than the animated movie (which wouldn't take much, IMO), but the track record of animated-to-live action films isn't all that great.

It will probably make more sense than the anime movie.

Let us pray it's not Pokemon.

No! It has to be a ridiculous, over-the-top anime that no sane person would even attempt to do in live action.

Like Dragon Ball.

Worse, One Piece - the live action movie. With a script that reads like "Fantastic Four meets Pirates of the Caribbean".

Wasn't there suppose to be an Astroboy movie too?

Dragonball could have been done if it were in the early part of the series. Trying to fit all of the Freeza Saga in the first or second movie would just be confusing to most people.

If it's America... I'd really say that They'd do Sailor Moon next, lol! But in all honesty, Devilman could make a good movie. Deathnote too... (If they do something more like the Ring, and just have the key eliments, but do their own movie and not try to squeeze the series into 2hours. I know I heard rumors in the past of this becoming a movie)

Also, I can picture an American version of Cutie Honey.

-thinks to self-
Naruto the live action, lol

Also, Yugioh the live action movie...? LOL! I'd pay $10 to see that right now! It'd be awesome! Especially because the Hair would be required!

There's a movie going to be (or already) released very similar to Death Note what with "notebook that can kill people writing their name".

And this movie seems to have very good chances of being top-notch. Heck if it can look good in a music video (a la, Stronger by Kanye West sampled from Daft Punk), let's see the real thing.

I remember hearing rumors of a Deathnote movie adaption for the US for a long while, but never saw any proof, so if it is finally showing itself then that is great! :-D

You probably heard of the live action Japanese movie filmed in California (irc(

That Lifetime Movie.

SUCKS

I'm pretty sure they already have a live action movie for Death Note in Japan.
