(Please don't take the thread title literally.)

The Pokemon anime, as we all know, has a long and rich history. It feels as though the XY series has taken great pains to ignore this. The only past reference I can of is the allusion to Kojiro's backstory in the Tairenar's broken stick episode.

My question is, have there been any other past references, explicit or implicit, within the XY anime?

I can only think of the Piplup reference in XY022. According to Bulbapedia: "After Serena says that the Piplup she observed in the aquarium are really friendly, Ash notes that he knows one that was completely something else, referring to Dawn's Piplup."

It wasn't even very explicit. Kids who never watched DP would just shrug it off.

There was a reference to the Kanto episode title "Iwark as a Bivouac" in XY021. There was a video of an Iwark huddled around its trainer in a snowstorm and the MC says something like "Iwark really is a bivouac!!"

Odly enough, despite its lack of references to previous seasons.....xy feels less distant from past arcs then BW to me.

Past references are pointless anyway.

They're only really necessary if they contribute to the story, everything else is just fanservice.

Exactly. I don't see why some people think that XY somehow, to an extent, "needs them". I personally quite like it when they do it, but I'm not going to get annoyed if they don't.

I'm all for continuity but it doesn't bug me that XY doesn't have much references to past series. They're fun but not obligatory to me. All I'm hoping for is that they don't skip Pallet Town when XY ends. I'd like to see Ash's Kalos Pokémon meet up with the rest of his Pokémon (the photo at the end of BW was nice but I'd like to see more than that)

I'd love to see an episode of Ash's new Pokemon interact with his old Pokemon at the end of the series. I would have liked to see this happen at the end of BW, but it's better than how DP only showed Ash walking into/through Pallet Town as the final shot of the series. These sorts of episodes are the only thing that I kind of expect when it comes to references to past series, since I feel that it's something that adds to each region's journey.

I'd like something as Satoshi remembering his old pals (that reference to Kasumi when the latter picks up her fishing bait comes to mind), or Pokemon (as well as Trio, it still bugs me poor Manene's been totally forgotten)

I agree that even though we haven't had much references to the past, XY sure feels more connected to previous sagas than BW, as TyphoonStrom said.

I think that we will start having more references to the past from now on. I am under the impression that there is a tendency for the increase in references to the past as the series approach its end. I think that around the league and after it we will have more references.

Moreover, I think that even if we truly have had few flashbacks, there are other things that allude to the past that we've been having in XY. For example, Meowth filling in for Jessie or James during the motto was something that used to happen once or twice each series, and after two whole series without that happening, the gag finally returned in XY. And the twerps saying the motto also returned, this time with Bonnie and Serena, and that is also something we haven't seen for a while.

And... I still hope that Seviper and the others return this series, and that Cassidy and Bill appear once more. And I also would like if Ash's old Pokémon returned for the league.

Heck, XY's target audience wasn't even alive when some of that stuff happened, and I doubt they'd feel like looking into it if something was bought up...

References to the past are nice, but hardly needed.

The producers and the kids this show is made for likely don't give a crap about a "long, rich history". Heck, I'm not entirely sure I'd call it so "rich" to begin with. More like "middle class"...

Didn't Ash have his OS backpack during the flashback in XY121? I love little stuff like that. Also, I'm not sure if this counts but Team Rocket's motto theme is a direct remix of their Kanto motto theme, for what it's worth. Too bad they don't use it any more :/ They don't need references every episode, but every now and then would be nice (like if we get another Pallet Town episode at the end of XY, would love to see Misty or Tracey or something).

It'd be cool if they had an episode similar to BW116, but instead of flashbacks relating to Charizard, it could be about why Team Rocket follows Ash/Pikachu around in the first place. It's obvious they want to steal Pikachu sure, but do kids today know why exactly these characters from an organization that's not in XY or ORAS is following the group around in pretty much every episode? I mean yeah there's not really a story to it outside of EP002 but it would be a nice excuse to reanimate some older episodes, and honestly even if it's 100% filler it'd be way more interesting than a good deal of episodes, filler or not.

Actually, I personally compared the backpacks. They look nothing alike.
I made this image for comparison:

Ash used Misty's Special Lure in the Golden Magikarp episode; it wasn't really focused on on mentioned but it was there.

The magazine only mentions his current team and a final member (most likely Goodra). They would allude to the reserves to create more hype.
Not necessarily.

You also have to take into account the possibility of Flare causing a mess in the middle of the League to proceed with their plot and the League possibly being postponed or continued at a later date. This might not even be the actual League but rather the magazine presenting it as such before Flare ruins the whole thing.

This is the "actual league" insofar as at least the first two rounds. I don't see why Ash wouldn't decide to use his reserves from the get-go, as he did in Johto and Sinnoh.

Who knows. There's still a possibility he's reserving them for later fights. Simply because the magazine isn't showcasing them isn't necessarily indicative of them not appearing. He may just be saving them for when he really needs them.
