I made this thread specifically for the Johanna bashing/discussion that was going on in another thread regarding the Grand Festival finale.

As we all know, Johanna is the mother of Dawn, but she is different from other moms in a sense that she actually won A Ribbon Cup and was A Top Coordinator back in her day, as well as gives Dawn constructive criticism compared to Delia and Caroline who are more bubbly per say.

Then, there's some who draw comparisons with Zoey, being that they both mentored Dawn at one poin, and both have Glameow.

With that said, did you think Johanna was a good mother? To me she was, she probably didn't want to take away any shine from her daughter and wanted to show, that she doesn't need her mom there holding her hand to achieve greatness.

I love Johanna, to me she is so awesome, and the best mom in the show, although I do like Caroline and Delia, though.

As for my answer? I couldn't care less.

I like how they made her more unique and different than the others mothers and also gave her backstory, influence on her daughter main character, involvement in the story, etc...

To be fair each of the categories jump from one extreme to the next! I think she's good in her own ways but she wasn't necesarily an excellent mother and it wasn't that she was ok. It was all in between lol! Mothers have to be like that to be effective in their upbringing methods!

Seconded.

Anyway onto thread. I think that she was a good mother. Kids have to learn to grow up and mature. Ayako is trying to ensure that it happens with Hikari.

As a character, she is meh. She wasn't funny and ditzy like Delia was, or a fun character like Brock's mother was. May's mother had so few appearances that you didn't feel like the writers were shoving her down our throats.

Johanna is shown every 15-20 eps or so, and its usually just her sitting in her house. Also she is fairly ugly, I hate her hair style. And her body is extremely thin almost anorexic. At least Delia and Caroline were womanly.

As a mother character, no.

Aside from having a different backstory than the other mother characters she's still pretty meh to me. She's not really exciting and she's barely shown why she's a top coordinator, at the very least she could've done a good appeal or contest battle (with someone who's not Dawn something like Zoey would've been interesting).

She also doesn't really have an identifiable personality, simply being strict here and there (basically telling her daughter to suck it up when she loses), but she doesn't seem all that decent to be around with; hang around with. And although she does kind of seem nice it's kind of hard to tell what she really thinks because again she has no identifiable personality. Like for example Delia was extremely glad May came over, you can't really tell what Johanna thinks of Ash or Brock.

The only aspects of a personality was when Lila showed up where she acted like a little kid.

But otherwise I don't really care.

I shall always treasure the memory of Johanna.

Sitting on that damn couch.

With that damn Glameow.

Watching Dawn.

(Booo-urns)

To me? No. But to Dawn, yes. :D

XD I'm litterally on the floor laughing.

On topic, yes, because she knows that just gushing over your child and overpraising her isn't always the right thing to do. She's let Dawn make her own mistake and learn to get through the tough times on her own and with the help of her friends. It's been shown that she's supportive of Dawn and that she cares, can't ask for much more than that...

That damn couch. I just hate the color of it.

Agreed, Johanna needs an interior designer. stat.

I didn't know people had to be cruel, mean, or a lesbian/gay, to be considered interesting.

to be honest there just want enough closure, but she did receive more closure then Caroline....poor Caroline.

plus she actually accomplished something with her life, being a top coordinator, rather than obsessing with underwear, or hanging out with a man who is possibly twice her age. definitely more to say about her, but like with the other moms, just not quite enough.
edit: oh yeah forgot my answer

it would be option 1

To me? No. But to Dawn, yes. :D

QFT. That made me lol.

She was probably my 2nd favorite behind Delia (Because we all love her). She was more of a unique mother compared to the others. She gave constructive criticism to her daughter rather than the usual 'You can do it!' and the such.

Well, she'll probably get Dawn farther through life than Caroline will for May. >.> *shot*

So yeah, I liked her! :D Awesome mother!

I agree. It is utterly ridiculous that Zoey and Johanna both have a Glameow!
I wouldn't really say it was utterly ridiculous, it was just kinda lame. They could have shown off a different pokemon with her from the start.

I didn't know people had to be a lesbian/gay, to be considered interesting.
People considered Zoey interesting?

She wasn't a bad mother, I mean like she cared. She just had limited mobility.
