Was Psyduck ever meant to master psychic attacks?

While rewatching some old episodes something struck me, Psyduck seemed to have a lot of episodes focused on getting it to learn how to master Confusion and apparently psychic attacks in general.

It actually seemed like the writers were building up to something with Psyduck....but once you get about halfway into Johto...it just stops. I know Psyduck is in the Whirl Cup, but aside from that all focus on the Pokemon hits a standstill.

Was Psyduck originally meant to master psychic attacks and become a powerful battler instead of a comic relief Pokemon? It seems to me that if the writers were a little better in Johto that Psyduck would have eventually turned into a powerhouse pokemon that Misty could use in everyday battle without waiting for it to get a headache.

Sadly, the hoso's didn't feature Psyduck all that much and of course due to Misty being gone for more than 5 seasons we don't get to see it all that much in the modern day anime.

In general though, do you think the writers were originally building up to something with it early on, yet once we hit Johto, like most things that season, the writers just kinda forgot what they were doing with the show?

I really wonder.

She did ask Oak to help Psyduck in the HOSO!I think it would be cool if Misty and it would appear by the end of the DP saga! And I think it would be a powerful Golduck(can swim, can use move normally) at that time! And it would be cooler if it evolve into a Gen V Water/Psychic to promote Gen V in that arc!

Koduck was meant to be a comic relief pokemon from day one. Yeah, it got to use some powerful attacks and a few episodes were spent training it, but I think that was more to make it a useful comic relief character rather than a useless one.

But it's a shame though. Even if it was originally one of those comic relief characters, it showed so much potential in battles. It also couldn't use water techniques aside from that low powered Water Gun during Eevee's first appearance (along with Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon [might as well add Poliwrath too]) in PKM. Her Poliwag seem to be centered more, along with Staryu, than her Psyduck and Goldeen. I can't believe how someone dreaming to be the best Water-type trainer lets some of her monsters rot like this. Surely she doesn't want this to happen but her fierce temper seem to be the boundary for her to train Psyduck, not to mention her Togepi.

The reason I ask is because nowadays it seems like the weakest Pokemon always turn into the most powerful in training. May's Torchic is the perfect example, I don't think it ever won a single battle in its entire run. It was never used in a Contest. It was so weak that she ignored the thing and focused on Beautifly instead.

Then when it evolves it becomes a powerhouse and becomes her main battler for the series.

Even if Psyduck never evolved, it could have still turned into a powerful Pokemon under Misty's control. Somehow I think this would have been a good storyline for her in Johto, instead of the "let's just mother Togepi all saga" thing we got from her that region. It's a shame too, because I think people would have enjoyed watching a plotline about her that saga.

Well it seems anime loves to turn their attention to the 1st form monsters because most of all know for a fact that the evolved monsters are the ones to use for battles, realistically. Pikachu with Light Ball equipped may be the only non-evolved monster to be quite a threat, but there will always be better ones. Not sure if there are other weenies out there that may show more Attack/Special Attack power to match the evolved forms and legendaries in terms of equipment and/or special effects.

Anyway, I do wish Kasumi did more than her normal uninteresting routine. Another reason why Jouto series dulled me to the fullest.

I get the distinct impression that the folks over at TPC have a soft spot for Psyduck-notice how often it appears at seemingly random points within the franchise.

I'm sure we'll see Psyduck again some day.

There are some Psyduck's scattered around in random fillers, but all of them fail compared to Misty's Psyduck. :)

This kind of correlates to what I made in a different thread a few months back, I always wanted to see Misty be a more active battler when she was on the cast. She used to pride herself on her dream but...never really did much to work toward it aside from a handful of occasions. Psyduck becoming a powerhouse Pokemon where she could actually command it in battle would have been awesome to see.

Damn, why were the writers so bias toward Ash in the early days? Its like they were so scared shit of any other character eating away his screentime that they gave Misty/Brock/Tracey as little fillers as possible.

Thank god the writers realized having Ash shoved down our throats 90% of the time isn't the best of ideas and changed all that.

That's good but......I think they go too far!I think the anime focus on Dawn too much!

Yeah it does, but its probably better to make use of the females to their full potential. The writers now want the show to be divided up for both genders, and they've done a better job of accomplishing that lately.
