I think I went into this expecting too much. It's not bad. Far from it. But...I think I was expecting amazing, and I only got great. Amazing acting, for the most part (there was one line when we first see Rorschach and Nite-Owl interact that seemed...wooden, but Jackie Earle Haley was great as Rorschach). Great visuals and special effects. Not many changes (which, honestly, made the few changes there WERE stand out more, though it appears some of the more conspicuous missing scenes will be in the DVD) from the original comic. Great soundtrack, too. LOT more blood and close-ups of breaking bones than I was expecting, though.

Overall, it was really cool, and completely different from every comic book movie out there (which is both a benefit and a burden). Definitely not a movie for kids. Definitely good and solid, though.

yes, definitely NOT a movie to bring kids to! that was quite possibly the weirdest movie I ever saw, not to mention the longest!

Without spoiling anything for those who haven't seen the graphic novel or movie....best villain line ever.

Is it bad that I've read the graphic novel and seen the movie and I'm not sure what you're talking about (I can think of a few good lines from "the" villain, but I usually navigate to Rorschach's insanity or Dr. Manhattan's cold analysis)?

Yeah, I've read the graphic novel and seen the movie too and I can think of a ton of awesome lines from the bad guys (which can differ widely between perspectives ;D )

Some Amazing Lines I just feel like posting:

Rorschach said:
None of you understand... I'm not locked up in here with you... You're locked up in here with me!

Rorschch said:
Men go to prison, dogs get put down.

Dr. Manhattan said:
I feel fear... for the last time.

And, of course, the one in my sig. There were a ton of others, though, but those are the ones I've been saying all weekend.

Overall I thought the move was really good, and it was awesome to see the comic book come to life on the big screen, and not just dressed up fanboys ;D (which we saw a lot of at the midnight screening...) I'm actually thinking of seeing it again with my uncle tomorrow.

That scene with Dr. Manhattan and The Comedian in Vietnam would've been so much better if they didn't have that song playing in the background...

I skimmed the graphic novel recently because my roommate is a big fan of the novel. So I went to go see it in IMAX yesterday and I thought that it was a very good movie. There were some minor things that they could have done better but overall, I really enjoyed it. And the big IMAX screen and sound effects were awesome.

So if you haven't seen the movie yet, or you have and are planning on going again, I recommend seeing it in an IMAX theater if you can.

I loved it. It was..... Different thanghe other recent comic book movies, although different from the graphic no el. I want my pirate comic dammit!

The DVD of Tales of the Black Frieghter was released not too long ago, you should check it out (though I haven't seen it yet :/ ). It's narrated by Gerard Butler, who was a complete bad@$$ in 300.

Ha ha, thanks for reading my blog, by the way, sorry I couldn't reply to your comment sooner >__<

I didn't like it. The villain's motivation was hard to decipher, as was Dr. Manhattan's. I'm hoping the graphic novel makes more sense. There's a fine line between complex and too difficult to follow.

Can't remember the exact line, but it goes something like this...
"Do you take me for some comic book villain? Do you think I'd explain my plan to you if there was any way you could possibly stop me? I did it 35 minutes ago."

that movie looks awsome
i really cant wait to see it

Not to spoil anything, but Dr. Manhattan has no motivation, minus the "miracle" thing (which IS explained better in the graphic novel, after a longer tour of Mars). He, easily, got translated the best from graphic novel to big screen, including a big chunk of his origin story being almost a scene-by-scene recreation (with a LITTLE taken out, but nothing big).

And the villain's never...fully explained. I mean...his motivations are said, like they were in the movie, but it never goes beyond that, I don't think (been a while since I've read the final issues). Though there IS a bit more lead in to what he does (and if you're not aware, what he does is VERY different in the graphic novel).

And Archaic, I can't believe I forgot that line. I loved that one. It's nice to see a smart villain who's ACTUALLY SMART.

Yeah, I can't either. That was an awesome line. I remember reading that in the comic book and just saying, "whoa..."

I went in without any expectations, and I wasn't too wowed by it. All the subtlety in the graphic novel is gone here.

Jakie Earle Haley was amazing as Rorschach, and was easily the brightest spot of the film.

Snyder really went out of his way to let us all know this was rated R for a reason, and I didn't like the insane amount of the Snyder-staple slow-mo.

I'm indifferent on the ending. This one had a more clean-cut moral conflict than the novel, and I would have liked to see a little more ambiguity there.

I'm sure I'll purchase the director's cut when it is released, if only for Haley's performance.

If you'd like you can read my full review here.

I saw it last night. I loved it. I just wish--
Prime had remembered to warn me before that scene with Rorschach tracking down the kidnapped girl. Dr. Manhattan would blow people away and I'd never even blink, but seeing that almost made me lose it. I actually started gagging right there in the theater.
Rorschach was amazing. He was a sick, twisted, psychotic son of a buck, and I loved every moment of him. Simply seeing him is worth the ticket price.

It was great. I thought it'd be terrible or unwatchable because of the director's stance on making a near recreation of the novel in story, which would see an awkward transition from novel to movie that would make the interwoven threads of story tangled and impossible to comprehend in movie format. The movie was presented in a satisfactory manner, though full appreciation can only be gained by reading the book or watching multiple times... So I can't say it was perfect.

Pretty good. I honestly think it was inferior to The Dark Knight and Iron Man, but it was still one of the better movies I've seen in a while.

So much more violent than I expected. XD I mean, the soruce material got kind of girzzly at point, but yikes! I can understand the complaint that they went too far, but I honestly like it this way: in real life, superhero battles would be absolutely nasty. I gotta say though, the sex scene felt unneccesary; the graphic novel's approach to it was much better. Although I did laugh at the end of it.

Another complaint I've seen... and this stems primarily from my high school-aged friends... is Dr. Manhattan's penis. Honestly, people. It's a penis. Nothing you haven't seen before. x.x; I mean, I hate to even bring it up, but that seems to be the primary conversation point amongst so many people, and it's just plain driving me crazy.

And far more annoying: what kind of parent takes their small child to see an R-rated movie!? o_O Especially one as adult-targeted as this one. What the hell, man.

One comaplaint that's completely justified was "What was that tiger thing?" Yeah, if you're going to include it in the movie, at least provide an explination and don't just randomly throw it in at the end.

Of course the reason for its being in the first place was to set-up the alien bit, but since they dumbed that down... :( Seriously, those images from the book practically haunt me. Having some people get caught up in a blue explosion is not that strong of a visual. I guess the irony of the false alien would be lost on the mainstream audience- since from what I've seen on online review comments a shocking nubmer of people wanted action action action instead of a character-drive deconstruction of super-heroes- but eh, I would have liked to see the original ending. I honestly didn't mind changing the tone a bit to a more concluding one, though.

They nailed Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, and the Comedian. Not so much Ozymandias. The soundtrack was handeled pretty well, although Ride of the Valkyries at the one part felt awkward. Maybe that was the point, but I simply didn't care for it.

And yeah, I realize I'm doing more whining about reception than discussing the actual movie. But it was a pretty loyal translation, to the point where I don't have that many comments to make about it because it's all old to me. :p

My only complaints were the slow speed shots and when the guy's elbow exploded. The first was just...not needed. And the second...well...REALLY wasn't needed.

Honestly, I went in expecting to see it from beginning to end. So to me, it just wasn't there that much.

I only saw one kid there, and they had to have been no older than two. Don't think the kid really watched it, though.

How much the film made...in heavy detail (comparing it to other comic films, other Alan Moore films, etc.).

Yeah, but it doesn't really seem necessary. There's a difference between not censoring a movie because you hate censorship and not censoring a movie for the sake of showing off a glowing blue penis.

I'm fairly confident that was supposed to reference Apocalypse Now, but since I've never seen it, I'm not sure.
