i really think it's a cool concept.

the we can see the cool, tough style of contest battles.

as part of the gang? well... I'd say no, but it'd be nice for a change for once
but what'll the female companion do o_O

A male coordinator in the group would be AWESOME, but...it just won't happen. Something tells me we'll just get another chick to replace Hikari or they'll replace contests with something else (or simply make them less primary). Otherwise I would kill for a boy like Ruby in Special.

Yeah, it'll always be a girl, so the young boys have some eye candy.

Well at least that would be different than getting third girl coordinator in a row doing contests, and seeing male for a change doing them could be nice.In that case Brock would probably have to leave(unless he stays as fourth character).

If that were to happen, talking about females it would be better in my opinion bringing someone older who already has solid groundwork allowing for further development, satsfying both older and new fans.Considering how later two girls are coordinators havingr two oordinators in group would be repetitive which leaves Misty which would be great addition to this show at same time bringing good chemistry with her great character, aswell something new connected with her ambition prolonging her story which was left unfinished in many areas.

All this girl replacing need to stop, giving chance to older femals to shine instead of treating them like dirt constantly going with this formula of which people are already starting to have enough.Seriiously if this continues we will have Ash end up travelling with 10 girls lol, which is disgusting.

Personally if i were to ask i would boot out contests for new region, replacing them with something else whether being from games or something coming from anime only production which would girl do(preferably older instead of another new one).

here's what i think:

i think they should limit contests to jessie and stick with other competitions, such as pokéringer, for the other characters. hopefully, the 5th generation will have new competitions that will be incorporated in the show.

it would be interesting to see a main male character doing contests, but my opinion regarding contests has changed.

contests got lame after kanto. there was so much variety when may, drew, and harley were around. may had a chick, a butterfly, a cat, a dinosaur, a bear, a turtle, and a fox. they all had different moves and they were all... not alike. i remember seeing a fire storm, a leaf and petal storm, an awesome battle between squirtle and ariados, and now... all i see are ice sculptures, ice skating, and ice... ice... ice... icy whirlpools, icy thunderstorms... :|

that's why i think they should limit them to jessie. jessie's performances are way more entertaining and so different than the other characters, especially dawn's, so yeah.

I've noticed that. I just watched a recent episode, even though I don't understand Japanese. Jessie's performance was interesting, and Dawn's was lame. Jumping on frozen bubbles?

Well Satoshi had competed in Pokéringer twice, so no, they couldn't limit it to Musashi. Main protagonists are always in competitions.

Don't forget TEH SPARKELEZZ! DER IZ NO APPEALZ WITHOUT ZE SPARKELEZZ!

One of the main male protagonists doing contests. The idea is good in theory and I'd love for the writers to bring another perspective to contests in the next gen, but the only way that would happen is if the also bring in an another new female companion and give her another full new quest as important as contests and gym, like pokethlon done right (well not that but you get my drift). That would mean two totally new characters with a totally new quest for the new girl.

More likely scenarios :

1- Ash = Gyms, New Girl or Dawn = Contests and Brock = Getting forgotten by writers (If Dawn stays, new guy or girl would do a gen V quest instead of contests)

2- Ash = Gyms, New Guy = Contests, New Girl = New quest and Brock = Getting even less screen time or leaving altogether

3- Scrapping contests altogether (which I hope they don't) and give new girl a new Gen V quest.

That being said, I agree with the above poster who complained about the abundance of Ice in Sinnoh contests... I think they shoud be somewhat revamped to add a little something to it... like different battle fields (i.e. doing the contest in a pool like the Wallace Cup and using water as part of the performance )

Japan doesn't have seasons for Pokemon, and the contests wouldn't necessarily be cool and tough just because there'd be a guy.

Contests are getting stale, but the gender of the protagonist who does them hardly matters given that it is their Pokemon performing the moves.

There'd still be "eye candy" with the competitors, but in all honesty, they need something different given that contests have become kind of lame. Dawn hasn't made me care for them from what little I've seen.

If this Grand Festival isn't well-received, they may be doing something different in the anime. But we shall see.

I meant in general, but mostly people in Japan since they'll get to test that before finalizing the Gen V games.

What else could they do, though, that would be continuously entertaining?

The show is designed in a way that new kids come in with each new generation.

The kids watching DP now and Dawn's contests have likely never seen May's contests, so Contests are essentially "new" to them.

People don't realize just how old the AG series is now. I'm willing to bet most of the kid audience watching DP now were too young to be around for the first wave of contests.

Yeah. That's actually very true, Scott. The kids who watched AG are now like "OMG, Pokemon is teh lamez now that we're teens." Give 'em a few more years and they'll sneak back, complaining about all these dang new girls and how much they liked May/Brock if he gets replaced. Oh, and they'll say something about how little Ash has prograssed since the Battle Frontier. That'll be a sight to see.

Very true, Scott. Each "generation" is meant for a new wave of kids - AG ended three to four years ago now, was it?

Though some of them that started watching midway through AG might not like DP's contests - the same might apply in the future. Another thing here is that they can't keep recycling the same ideas. In my fanfic, I've written a few contests and I find it hard to keep them fresh. There was the disastrous one in Volace where I used too many grass-types... so I understand completely how difficult this stuff is to create. The writers might want to keep it fresh for their own reasons.

Well if girls can be trainers I think boys can do contests why are the writers so stereotypical? Not making too many girl trainers with the group

Well I'd want a guy who can be a tough guy who does contests and slowly try to work it out better at appeals and stuff
