Hey guys!

Today's the first day of the Bug-Catching Contest! In honor of this fine pasttime, I went ahead and made an official Bug-Catching Contest thread for those interested.

Simply post the Day, Pokemon caught, whether you placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, what Lv. you caught it at, and how many points it received. Plus any other misc info. We'll keep a running catalog of each day and rank 'em accordingly.

Bug-hunts are every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Good luck and happy bug-hunting!

Tip: The more health your Bug has, the better chance it has of winning.

Tip: Putting the Bug to sleep is probably the best and easiest way to get it at full health guaranteed with no hassle.

For those looking for a quick solution, here are a few easy-to-learn Sleep attacks used by various Pokemon:

Sleep Powder - Hoppip @ Lv. 16
Spore - Paras @ Lv. 17

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010. Kelsey: Pinsir (lvl. 13). No placement :-( Two of the other Bug Catchers got Scythers.

Pinsir is Lonely natured, with Good Endurance.
HP 42
Atk 44
Def 30
SAtk 21
SDef 25
Spe 29

What the hell is up with these judges? How is CATERPIE (2nd place) better than my BEEDRILL (3rd place)? And a Venonat got first place, too. :conangry:

I wasted like 10 balls trying to catch that thing. Good thing I saved right before the contest start.

Thanks for that tip.

I think it's way harder on these games than the originals.

I caught a Butterfree Lv.13 (it's health was 27/39), and it didn't even place. Lost to Scyther (3rd), a Caterpie (2nd) and a Kakuna (1st). :-(

I think it's great that health is factored in. That way you can't just go catch a Pinsir and win every time. It took me a while to figure that out with my Japanese HeartGold.

I'mma steal your layout for the information, V Faction.

Sketch: Butterfree (1st place - 354 points)

You beat me by three points! Haha.

The Butterfree is level 15. I took my Slowking with me and I only had to put it to sleep. A Pinsir showed up afterward but I couldn't catch it by just putting it to sleep.

Too bad this Butterfree is Docile... oh well.

I kind of like this idea of actually comparing Bug-Catching Contest results... we could make this a weekly thing... we'll see.

Lv 17 Paras - 1st place (330 pts)

Haha, I had no idea what I was doing. I just threw a ball and caught it. Didn't even have to fight it. :p

Paras LV 15. Second Place, 330 points

Lost by 3 points. D:

I didn't even place. :(

I caught a Paras, but it poisoned my Aipom... and later I found a Scyther but it was able to beat my Aipom because of the poison

Butterfree Lv 13. No placement, ??? pts. (forgot to keep track)

I should have kept that Caterpie I caught with no effort. :/

Pinsir Lv 13. 1st place, 327 pts.

Great idea! I will be posting mine once I make it to the National Park. The National Park is located just north of Goldenrod, right?

Also, how is the placing determined?

Playing my Japanese version, I think it's a multiplication of level and HP remaining. I think it was always like that, because I remember not always winning when I got a Scyther or Pinsir in GSC too.

caught a Female Scyther, lvl.13 a few hours ago. Placed 2nd with 287 points. I got my scyther, which was what i was aiming for, so i'm happy :p

Yes, you bring up a great point. Putting the Bug to sleep is probably the best and easiest way to get it at full health guaranteed with no hassle.

It was weird, I spent all that time trying to catch a paralyzed Scyther, but failed. Then I just chucked a ball at a Kakuna at full health, used the rest of my balls up on another Scyther and failed, but surprisingly I won with Kakuna.

And I'm guessing the stones given out are in a random order?

It's a random stone... I think after you get the Nationaldex? It doesn't say anything like that on the Wiki... but it does say any stone can be the 1st Place prize.

I'm kind of looking forward to doing something like this on a weekly basis.
