This thread is for those WTF censorship moments that are incredibly bizarre and awful but in a so-good, it's-bad kind of way.

This isn't anything specific so much as in general: the removal of blood. Granted, some people can be squeamish and I won't blame them but when a character's getting pummeled, you'd think they'd get more cuts and bruises than what you see.

Anyone else? (try to use less obvious ones like 4kids, though they're not excluded).

4kids censoring onigiri and replacing it with jelly-filled donuts. (Come on. That's just racist.)

Or with sandwiches. I don't think it's racist, so much as it is plain pointless. Both were so stupid, though, that they actually made me laugh.

I remember the quote when they kept the onigiri/riceballs and called them jelly-filled donuts, though:

Brock: "These donuts are great! Jelly-filled are my favorite! Nothing beats a jelly-filled donut!"

XD.

I still don't get how calling it a rice ball would've gone over the kids' heads. Heck, when Todd Snap first appears, they're called just that.

IKR? I don't get it, either. One episode 4Kids would call them rice balls, the next donuts, then eclairs, then rice balls again, then popcorn balls, then go back and forth for episodes like that. O_O

Blue Mr Popo in one of the tv versions of Dragonball Z Kai
Censoring Kenji Yamamoto's music in Dragon Ball Kai and Budokai HD and replacing with inferior soundtracks because fans speculated plagiarism despite no formal complaints being made.

The CW did it, even when Nicktoons and CN got away with regular Black Popo. While different networks, KIDS WERE WATCHING IT LIKE THEY WOULD WITH THE CW.

In Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock I remember getting excited to be able to play Listen to Her Heart by Tom Petty, because it was one of my favorite songs. They censored the word cocaine from the song. I never understood why. I mean, I get that drug references are a bit taboo, but come on. It's a game about Rock n' Roll, you'd have to censor the entire game if you wanted it to be innocent.

Specifically, the line in the song goes "You think you're gonna take her away with your money and your cocaine. Realize this song was written in the 70's, so drug references were pretty much par for the course for rock music.

All censorship is weird, IMO. Music is a form of expression. It is art. It should not be censored.

There's some pretty strange censorship on Miiverse.
Microsoft banning people for swearing in R rated games.
In the European and Trilogy versions of Metroid Prime 3, "Damn! They're targeting the planetary defense system!" was changed to "No! They're targeting the planetary defense system!".
DBZ, they censor things like death becoming sending to another dimension while they don't censor things like Vegeta bleeding on Freiza's face who then licks it up.

As far as I remember, they only did that in the crappy dub before FUNimation took over production. Death is still referred to as death in the rest of the series. I don't know if they took that path in DBZKai, because I haven't watched that series beyond the first two episodes and don't really want to. I have many fond memories of DBZ from my childhood and I don't want those ruined by abridgements.

Another really crappy sensorship of death was in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, where 4Kidz thought it would be clever to call it "being sent to the stars". I liked GX, but that always, always makes me cringe. WHYYYYYYYYYY?

Those abridgments happen to be done to make the Anime closer to how things were in the original Manga with much less filler (like Fake Namek and whatnot). The dub is faithfully translated more and the voice actors deliver better than in the old dub.

I actually liked some of the filler, but abridging nearly 300 episodes down to 99 or whatever is extremely concerning to me. How much did they cut that wasn't filler?
I could go on, but this discussion shouldn't go any further in this thread, so I'll drop it now.

Practically zero. You'd be surprised as to how the first Anime padded out the series in comparison to the Manga (which I'd recommend).

DBZ Kai had 2 censored for TV versions (one of which had blue Popo and orbs instead of halos) but the DVD version is closer to the Japanese version even calling moves by their Japanese names in the earlier DVDs. They even say bastard a lot in the Saiyan - Freiza Sagas.
I think they may have gotten lazier and used the Nicktoons script for the later ones cos I noticed the language got lighter later on (though Cell calls Gohan a bastard if I recall).
Also the Kai music was better till they took it out, I recommend getting the DVDs second hand because they re-released the first half with the bad music.

Just for fun, here is one of Vegeta's best lines in the Freiza saga

Like I said earlier, this conversation would do better in the new thread I started for such discussions in the "Land of the Rising Sun" forum. I don't want to get in trouble for spamming a topic with unrelated posts. I just hope I don't get in trouble because you're allowed to respond to threads that haven't been touched in a year on this board.
