My computer keeps telling me that I have to connect to the internet, even when I'm online! And whenever it tries to "connect", it tells me there's no dial tone!

It's beyond frustrating, and started when a friend tried to connect her computer to mine, which didn't work.
 
If you don't normally use dial-up you could try going into Network Connections from the Control Panel and right-click>disable on the dial-up connection.

well you can either delete it or if you have the option to "cancel as default connection" (on right-click)
