I used to think that cars didn't exist, looking at the paths in the pokemon games and anime. Looking back on it now, it still hurts my brain. =)

I definitely thought that some species of Pokemon could talk rather then it being just certain individuals. Slowking famously talked in the 2nd movie, however its Pokedex entry from Shield says this:
Slowking can solve any problem presented to it, but no one can understand a thing Slowking says.
Similarly there are quite a few Pokemon that can understand human speech (Notably: Lapras) but that doesn't mean they can talk. For awhile, I thought these Pokemon could talk too lol.

This actually still kinda drives me crazy sometimes lol!! You see roads and vehicles fairly often in the anime and there are roads in the cities!! I actually always find myself wanting more routes to incorporate them! I want dusty disused stretches of desolate interstate highway! I want winding country roads lit by flickering, poorly maintained light posts! I want to explore beneath underpasses! Wahhh!!

As far as an actual answer of mine to the thread topic goes… hmmm… I used to think there was only ever one of every single mythical and legendary! They made that pretty explicitly untrue later but I was soooo sure of it for many years.

I also thought this!! I usually blame this on the fact that I started with PMD Explorers where basically every legendary/mythical is a unique character, but even that game has multiple Phione and Shaymin. For years I didn't nickname any of the legendaries I caught (aside from changing their names to title case instead of all caps) because of this.

In a more mechanical perspective, when I played HGSS for the first time, I saw the description of Never-Melt Ice that says it "repels heat" and thought that meant it reduced the damage taken from Fire-type moves, so I would give it to Pokémon that were weak to Fire even if they didn't know any Ice-type moves...

Apparently most pokemons can understand human speech. That's how they understand their trainer's instructions.
It's just that some pokemons are less capable of producing the sound used by human language.

When I was really young I thought chikorita or bayleef was called C-Leaves because it shot out C-shaped leaves when using Razor Leaf and that’s also what I thought it was saying.

I used to think that mimikyu were dead Pichu that just wanted to evolve and were mad at Pikachu because they knew they could not be one
