In today's dose of weird, apparently Star Wars creator George Lucas has been cast for a role in the upcoming Minions & Monsters movie.

George Lucas' New Movie Role Reveals a Secret Passion [Exclusive]

George Lucas makes a surprise voice acting appearance in Minions & Monsters, and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri reveals how the cameo happened.

Meledandri told Collider that Lucas is a huge fan of Illumination's slate of animated movies and that he especially loved Despicable Me and the Minions movies. "I had this privilege of meeting George about two years ago, and what led to my meeting him is how much he loves Illumination movies, and specifically Despicable Me, and even more specifically, the Minions," Meledandri said. "It was such a thrill to learn that and then to share it with the team, because obviously he's among a very small group of people who the entire studio shares a level of respect for that is just off the charts."


Meledandri continued, revealing that an idea came up for a character that Lucas could play and spoke with director Pierre Coffin, co-writer Brian Lynch, and producer Bill Ryan about getting the Star Wars creator in the latest film. "An idea for a character came up out of the story, and so I said to Pierre [Coffin], who co-wrote the movie with Brian Lynch, and Bill Ryan, who produces with me on the film, and I just said, 'Well, what if we could get George?' And they're like, 'Are you kidding me?' I had no idea, but I got such a fast yes," Meledandri said. "It was incredible. So, we're thrilled to have him in the film. I saw him recently, and he's already talking to me about the role he wants to do next in the next Minions movie. So, it's pretty incredible."

What other sorts of weird or unexpected cameos have you noticed in film and TV? Anything that stands out to you as a "how/why the heck did this happen"?
 
Wow, that is odd and unexpected. I thought George Lucas was mostly a film maker. I didn't think he acted very much. Maybe he's voicing a parody of himself?
 
Sometimes i remember when Lizzo and Jack Black appeared in season 3 of the Mandalorian...it felt kinda weird, lol. For whatever reason, super famous celebrities (especially non-actor ones) appearing in star wars just feels so odd to me. Mando had a good handful of those, for whatever reason.
 
I have never seen the movie, but my favorite Stan Lee cameo is in a DC Movie, Teen Titans Go to the Movies which lampshades all his cameos and kinda jokingly criticizes it poking fun at his "obsession" before just looping around and saying "yes, I AM OBSESSED with Cameos which type of movie from whatever company it is, I DON'T CARE!"

For some grim irony, Teen Titans Go to the Movies was Stan Lee's last cameo on screen before he passed away. Like I know it's messed up, but I find it darkly hilarious his last cameo released when he was alive (not his last one done before so since there was Ant-Man & the Wasp plus Endgame think they was a few more too) was not in a Marvel project but from DC Comics, his company's main competitor.
 
Stan Lee also cameoed in The Princes Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. You can't make this up, as he and Julie Andrews shared a scene together in some 2004 romcom.

Speaking of whom, in Mary Poppins, one of the actresses Dick Van Dyke sang to in the beginning was Marjorie Eaton. She is thought to be the physical actor for Palpatine in the original release of The Empire Strikes Back (before the 2004 reissue replaced her with Ian McDiarmid). This makes for a weird connection between two unrelated classics.
