Were the producers of the TV series saving Cheren for BW Season 2?

Maybe because they knew that he was going to be a Gym Leader from the get-go and that he'd therefore get an appearance regardless?

It would certainly make his puzzling absence from the series suddenly make a lot more sense.

Yeah, I think it's pretty obvious by now that they worked on the BW series while they're knowing at least some basic things, if not even more than just that, about BW2
Cheren will probably either appear in that tournament or will meet and battle Ash similarly to Homika
The anime starting with DP made it very clear that they're intending to feature all important game characters - I can't see any reason for this to not happen in BW too... especially since now Cynthia is appearing and we know Looker and Team Plasma were at least supposed to appear in these skipped eps... so Cheren is the only character that was strangely missing, and now we can see why...

Ash already has the Basic Badge, I don't see a reason unless they want to show him for the heck of it. They'd have to explain why he has the Basic Badge instead of Lenora, though.

Anime is not thrown together, as loose as Pokemon is with CoDs there is still a plot minorly present, and for the most part all things in the show are deliberate. We don't exactly know where the first segment of the anime for Generation V will end, in part because of Episodes 23 and 24 of Best Wishes not being released. Regardless, Ash wouldn't challenge Cheren unless its revealed that some advanced tournament required 16 badges. Still, it would be impossible for him to be a gym leader in that the anime trys to follow the canon of the games. Therefore, he could be introduced later down the line. He could also become a rival in Hoenn .

I could see him being an aspiring gym leader kinda like Chili is now, but I kinda think it's more likely that Trip was intended to be the anime's version of Cheren. And like Samurott said, Ash already has the Basic Badge, though I suppose they could change what badge Cheren gives out, just not mention it entirely or have him not even have a badge to give out yet.

If he does show up, I do hope they keep his relationship with Bianca though. It would be weird if they had a Cheren that didn't know Bianca...

Well yeah, Shootie is clearly playing the role as an expy of BW Cheren, a decision that has been questioned multiple times. "They wanted to use the B2W2 version of Cheren in the anime" seems like a highly logical reason for why they created Shootie to play this role.

Probably the same reason Hilda wasn't the FTC: they didn't want to change trainers starting their journey at age 10 or let Ash age. It would've made more sense for it to be her and one (if not both) of the others, but Heaven forbid the producers be anywhere near that smart...

Cheren's starting out as a Gym Leader and is a friend of Lenora who's showing him the ropes. It's just an idea of mine. Or maybe the league lack the creativity to make more badges so they gave the Basic Badge to Cheren to give out. It'd be funny.

OMG... this idea... I think I'd like the group more if it was Ash/Cheren/Bianca... (I'd still prefer Dawn to be there too and Chili instead of Cheren, but if these two just couldn't get in, and neither could the BW heroine, then I'd take Bianca/Cheren over Iris/Cilan...)
I guess they could have thought about doing it but decided not to when they learned BW2 will later introduce the older Cheren and Bianca? though then why Bianca did get to appear as her younger self... ok, I don't know... maybe they just throw lots of ideas into a hat and pick a random one 0__o

I'm not even sure about this "BW heroes are older" thing...
At the beginning of BW, Cheren says something like he's known Bianca for 10 years... to me, that kind of seem to hint the trio are 10 years old... since they seem to have been friends since they were born, or at least that's how it seems to me

I think that's more likely to happen with the BW2 rival, while Cheren will either get an ep like Homika's or appear in that tournament
I can also see him being more like Harley who met May in a Contest and then the Hoenn GF, and then turned into a full on recurring rival in AG's next saga in the BF... so Ash might meet BW2 rival in the Unova League, and then have him as a recurring rival for whatever he'll do after the League

I don't know! They confused me with him being the Normal type GL! Make him a douche like P or T and than realize he is he can win a battle with his Patrat! Now I don't see him becoming a League rival but he can't be a Gl or can he!?

Them having prior knowledge of him becoming a GL seems to make the most sense to me. Unless the anime did a Time Skip, they couldn't use the younger version, and we all know the anime is not ever doing a Time Skip.

I'm a bit torn on this. On one hand, I'd love to see him in the anime as an already established gym leader, but also with ties to Bel. On the other, I could see him being a rival of Satoshi maybe he's the new rival They could even keep the whole plot with Adeku; maybe he already met/has battled with him and will be used as someone for Shooti to learn from?

Either way, I'd really enjoy seeing how he's handled in the anime. I'm sure they could do something with him so that he's not too similar to Shooti.

I would love it if he appeared - either as a gym leader, or another rival. In the promotional vid, Cheren actually fights along the rival and PC against Team Plasma.
