Were we ever given a reason why Brendan didn't play a role in the show?

Now, we know he appeared for like 3 seconds at the beginning of the movies, but did the writers ever give a real reason why the male hero of R/S was completely ignored in the anime otherwise?

Obviously they would never have him join the group or anything like that since he'd conflict with Ash, but why wasn't he a recurring character or a rival even? Heck, why wasn't Brendan one of the main opponents for Ash at the Hoenn league?

It seems odd in retrospect, considering how the main male hero we had to play as in the games of that gen never made any sort of real appearance in the anime. Why wasn't he made a rival character?

Well, the male hero from G/S/C never appeared in the anime either.

And personally, I think the writers are fine with just having Ash in the main group (as far as male heroes go). Ash is based on Red's design, afterall.

Though, I have no idea why they didn't/couldn't write Brendan in as an opponent for Ash at the Hoenn League. O.O

Until DP, the anime writers REALLY hated using game characters aside from Gym Leaders. <_<

Since when they MUST use all of the important game characters?
It may be irritating they didn't use him but they don't must to and they don't need to have a reason for that
They simply chose not to use him as important character... like they did to the FRLG heroine and GSC rival and Wally and DP hero and rival
And a lot of other game characters

I guess they didn't wish to star both the game protagonists in the anime - Haruka was enough for that job. And anyways, it would be weird to see Satoshi meet up with Brendan, imo.
Speaking of Brendan, I wonder if he's been replaced by the DP protagonist in his "3 second clip" in Movie 10. xD

To be honest, why do some people act like Brendan would be an awesome character?

Hah. XD

I lol'd as I read that.

Anyway, lots of characters from the games have appeared in the anime.

Oh, and don't forget Eusine! XD

He was mentioned during the Johto league, though.
Oh yeah!

I remember that! ^^

At the beginning of an episode, Jackson mentioned Kenta/Jimmy's name while he was on TV. They called him something else though. I think it was Dani or Yoshi.... XD

Prof. Birch was actually in a lot of Hoenn episodes. I think he was in about 5-6 overall.

It was Prof. Elm who got screwed over. He was in the first ep of Johto, then the first ep of the Whirl Islands...and then the Johto league when Jackson called him. And...that's about it.

I'd personally like to forget that bastard, but yeah, him too. :3

The Red Gyarados counts too. What I wish, however, was that Matt and Courtney got screentime. Though I won't complain much. Brodie makes up for it, for the most part.

And Captain Briney, Peeko, President Stone...it's /easy/ to have the secondary NPCs in the series. Getting the main NPCs that aren't obligatory is like pulling teeth. Wally was disregarded, Barry was disregarded, and the males who could possibly overturn Ash are disregarded for the girls. Lucas will probably make the same kind of cameo that Brendan does in the 11th movie.

Birch is canonically an active man, don't forget. He /goes/ places and likes being active in the field as opposed to just...staying cooped up in his lab. He's very much easier to get out of his lab than Elm is. On the flipside, how many save the first three episodes have we seen of Professor Rowan?

Until DP? Really?

So, where is Kouki?
Where is Jun/Hisashi/Pearl/Whatever?
Where are Ginga?

If they REALLY stoped to hate game characters, they're going to show them ALL, including Mizuki.

I think its also because Birch was connected to a main character; May.

Oak, Birch and Rowan have all gotten more appearances than Elm. Why? They were the three starting professors to the three main characters, whereas Elm wasn't connected to any of the main character since nobody started out with him.

Granted, neither of them are as important to the show overall as Prof. Oak is, but the writers did seem to make an effort to show Birch a LOT more than Elm. In some early Hoenn eps Ash and May used to also show off their new captures to him, so he even checked their progress. Likewise, Birch actually came to Ash's house after Hoenn ended.

I guess this is more evidence proving how the 2nd generation got fucked over in general. Personally, I'd really like to know more about Utsugi. With the possible exception of Uchikido, who's anime-exclusive, he appears to be the youngest leading regional professor in the franchise (20s-early 30s, I'm guessing), so I think it would be intriguing to find out how, exactly, he managed to nab such a position at his age.
