What 8 badges did Mandi win

LOL saw that episode again lately, just had to say this, how in the world did Mandi manage to win 8 badges? Then somehow, he went up against a Krabby that had never even been in a battle before, and lost all three pokemon to it. Ok, some Krabbys can be level 40 wild, if you use the super rod, but Ash caught it without even using anothe Pokemon, so it couldn't be that high at the time.
So Mandi has a evolved grass type (Although he may have just caught it and used a leaf stone), that is suposed to go up a water type that was battling for it's first time, and lost, then he uses a seadra, which, the now kingler gets one direct hit with bubble, the weakest water type move against a water type pokemon, and that gets it. Then it beat his golgat, no type advantage or weakness for either one there, but the other two hadn't weakened kingler enough.
Anyone else get the idea that Mandi just went to Pokemon gyms and offered to perform magic tricks in exchange fort a badge?

The writers didn't know what they were doing in the first season. Every league battle after Kanto has been much better than Indigo.

Ash's Krabby was the original dues ex machina of the Pokemon anime. If the writers ever pulled something like that nowadays, the fanbase would have complained.

Just goes to show you how some of the ridiculous battles in the past go unnoticed simply because of nostalgia. Can't forget "Aim for the Horn" or Pikachu activating the sprinklers of the Pewter Gym either.

What about the Liza + Tate vs Ash battle? Pikachu electrocuted Swellow to give it 'Thunder Armor' in order to beat Lunatone and Solrock. What the hell was that about? >___>;
