ok, so my brother and I have different views on this. What is a more important criteria for being a "pokemon master" when playing a game? -Going through the game focusing on trying to collect all of the pokemon or -collecting pokemon along the way, but focusing on training them to be powerful in battle?

Re: please help settle an argument between myself and my brother...

There's no definite answer for this. People's opinions differ greatly, and also I think we had a thread like this a while back. You should probably look for it, it may help sort your arguament out.

Re: please help settle an argument between myself and my brother...

Here's the article on Bulbapedia.

It says in the article,
"It is the goal of Ash Ketchum, as well as many other Pokémon Trainers, to become a Pokémon master. However, exactly what this position is and how one attains it is vague and never fully explained. This, however, is done intentionally, as explained by a Nintendo representative in response to an email sent to Pokémon.com's mailbag;
'I'm very sorry, but the Pokémon Company does not answer questions of this nature. It is the intent of the Pokémon creators that such questions be left to the imaginations and interpretations of Pokémon fans, adding more excitement and mystery to the Pokémon universe.' "

As Axxon pointed out above, there is indeed no official answer to this question, but I'll state my opinion.

To be a Pokémon Master, you would need to literally be the very best...but how?

Pokémon trainers have plenty of opportunities to test their mettle: catching Pokémon, training Pokémon, collecting badges, beating the league... As such, a Pokémon Master would be an individual who traveled through all the regions (how many there are, we don't know), caught all the Pokémon there are to catch (I somehow doubt Legendaries would be required in the real Pokémon World, as well as fossils, and I can see Pokémon nearing extinction being excepted too), collected all the official badges, beat all the E4s, defeated all the champions. Sounds pretty much what we've been doing, right? Indeed, we are all working towards being Pokémon masters...but I think there must be one final test.

What that test is...we don't know. Maybe that will be revealed in the very last game, maybe the formula will be the same and there will be no great challenge. I personally believe that, much like what we have to do to become champions, we would have to defeat the current Pokémon Master (how the first Pokémon Master appeared? I assume he or she would be the first trainer to do everything already described but defeat the previous Master for obvious reasons, and then got recognized and received the title). I imagine the Pokémon Master could not be defeated with a simple battle, but also via other trials, such as evaluating how much the challenger knows about Pokémon, testing the trainer's mettle (not just his or hers Pokémon's), their skills, and so on... and only them, if the Pokémon Master deemed the challenger worthy, would there be a full out battle with plenty of adversities for both Pokémon and trainers.

After doing what many thought to be impossible, we would become the very best, like no one ever was...

I'm of the opinion that a "Pokemon Master" isn't strictly defined by anything, other than battling and training prowess. The Elite Four (in the anime I believe) are sometimes called "Masters" so it's probably not through any specific criteria that are met. A 'Pokemon Master' is simply someone who's exceptionally good at training and battling, so good to have earned the title 'Master.'
Unlike "Champion", I doubt that there's only one.
Wasn't it mentioned in the show that Ash was aiming to be the "world's greatest Pokemon Master"? This would also imply that there's more than one at any one time. I think it's just a cloudy term for an unbelievably good trainer.

I think that being a "master" in defined by knowing the basics and advanced techniques of whatever your craft happens to be.
I don't think there is any one "master" in anything, because no matter if you have been considered to have mastered something, odd are, there is another person who even bests you, despite your great skill.
Such as, a master of martial arts still often undergoes training and tries to improve their skill, despite having mastering their skill. They often do this by fighting other people who are considered masters, in order to keep gaining skill and insight.
So, I don't think that you have to be part of the elite four in order to be a Pokemon master, I think that earning 8 gym badges qualifies you as a master, because it has shown that you have enough knowledge in the art of Pokemon, and are solid enough in the basics like, typing and leveling. But also shows you are advanced enough to know things like strategy. Victory road is simply a test of many masters, and showing whom is superior to the other.

I think it is title given to the Strongest of the Strong. Simply a title that is all. All you got to do is make people call you a Pokemon master. But wouldn't that make champions master. No because they title means so much not even a regional champion is considered one.

I think it's just a title made up by Professor Oak or Ash. There's really no pokemon master in the pokemon world. It's just like in our real world saying, I'll be the cooking master or dancing master, etc.

Most likely it's a vague, unofficial term with no real criteria required to accomplish it. Theoretically speaking, Ash could do everything in his power and still not become a "Pokémon master". It's all in the eye of the beholder.

My interpretation of a "Pokemon Master" is the ultimate friend of Pokemon. D: Any and every Pokemon will listen to what the Pokemon Master says. Legendary Pokemon appear before the Pokemon Master to aide him however they can. And in return for the undying loyalty of the Pokemon, the Pokemon Master will be the one, single-handedly, to save the entire Pokemon world should it ever fall into a catastrophe.

Gold is such a trainer in my story. Basically, it's a "prophecy" thingy, what a Pokemon Master is.

Aren't those two things the same really. Anyways I guess want you can do is beat a multitude of champions to make people call you one

Ash flat out said that a Pokemon Master is the Champion of a League/'Champion Master'.

I would say that a pokemon master would be someone who has mastered the art of battling and training. In other worlds, you have learned the adbanced techniques of this.

In my opinion it is finding the pokemon that work best with you and forming them into a unbeatable team.

Then proceed to steamroll everybody.

To be the very best, like no one ever was.

I believe to be a Pokémon Master one must be extremely powerful, to the point of invincibility. Also, they must have mastered catching, training, and battling.

I believe a pokemon master is someone who knows pretty much everything about pokemon (moves and abilities by heart) and can use any pokemon at they're command effectivly and skillfully.

I believe a pokemon master is someone who can adapt to any situation and battle skillfully because if you think from a realistic view catching every pokemon is impossible in both the fact that new pokemon are constantly discovered as well as the fact that it would be impossible to care for each and every species of pokemon especially if you want shinies and in some cases more than one pokemon of an individual species.

To me a Pokémon Master is a person who can truly empathize with Pokémon, and lives and battle with their Pokémon as though they were extensions of their own being.

That does make a lick of sense to me since that is about style and form not how much power you have. Not to mention an extension of one's self seems kinda dehumanizing to the pokemon yeah they're not human but you know what I mean which contradicts the empathy thing. Also an extension of one's self is how Japanese warriors are expected to treat weapons so trainers like Silver already do that. It doesn't seem that hard.

To me a master is someone who is so could people call him a master and he/she is stronger than a champion.
