What are you most looking forward to in XY?

I think most people will opt for the new Pokemon (I know it's the only thing I really care about right now), but there's quite a list:

  • new Pokemon
  • new type combinations
  • new moves/abilities
  • characters such as player characters/rivals/gym leaders/evil team
  • the plot
  • the region and its locations
  • new items/pokedex/gadget
  • new gameplay additions (such as seasons and medals in Gen V)
  • new battle mechanics (like Gen V brought us rotation battles/wonder launcher/etc and Gen IV had the physical/special split)
  • online 3DS features and connectivity (this also includes stuff online like the GBU and Dream World)
  • the new updated 3D graphics and models
  • the possibility of future DLC (so stuff like hidden Pokemon)
  • new music/soundtrack
  • new gyms, elite four and battle facitilies (think Battle Frontier, World Tournament, Black Skyscraper, White Treehollow etc)
  • more version exclusive differences

There's quite a lot of stuff, really. If you think I've missed anything let me know and I'll add it to the poll.

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

There are quite a lot of things Im looking forward to:
-New Pokemon: I always like seeing the new Pokemon and concepts for them that Game Freak creates
-The plot: Im hoping the story retains the BW quality, I dunno if it will, but I hope for that
-New game mechanics
-new type combinations
- The possiblity of new types: It might happen and it's something that hasn't happened in quite a long time so it might be interesting
-Potential DLC: This could be interesting. They could hide stuff from us like exclusive Pokemon, even sidequests and additional areas to explore, I think that would be neat
-Graphics: I like what has been shown so far, cant wait to see the whole game
-Online features: Maybe the Dream World will be back or even something new

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

Hmm, things I'm mostly looking forward to? Well, let's make a little list from the top of my head:

- New legendaries
- Graphics
- Battle sceneries, see how Pokemon moves while in battle, battle animations, item effect animations etc
- Region design
- Possibility of new type(s)
- Possibility of DLC
- Hopefully finding new Pokemon to add to my absolute top non-legendary favorites. I didn't find any non-legendary Pokemon that really stood out for me in Gen V.

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

The new Pokémon of course, but what I'm most excited about at the moment is actually the new battle graphics and animation. What we've seen so far looks awesome so I can't wait to see the final product in action when I get to play through it myself.

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

In addition to the new Pokemon, I'm really excited about seeing the old Pokemon rendered in the cel-shade style 3D graphics. Likewise, I'm curious about what all the move animations look like in the new game too.

I'm also waiting with bated breath for any information on the region itself, and the kinds of environments we'll be able to explore.

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

Of that list, I'd say I'm most interested in:

-New Pokemon
-New type combinations
-New moves/abilities
-Characters (Player characters/rival/gym leaders/evil team/etc)
-The plot
-The region and its locations
-New battle mechanics
-The new 3D graphics and models
-New music/soundtrack
-New gyms, elite four and battle facilities
-More possible version exclusive differences

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

The two things I am most looking forward to are the new Pokemon, of course, and also the new graphics and 3D models. I am very happy and excited to see the Pokemon franchise take another leap, this time into 3D. I cannot wait to explore this new 3D land, with new Pokemon, new trainers, new villains, new locations, and most important of all, new journeys.

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

Sending out my Shinx, Eevee, and Blaziken in a Triple Battle and seeing them in 3D!!!

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

Actually, I'm a bit more excited for new battle mechanics (bonding mechanic?) than for new pokémon. A bit more. But other than those, I'm also interested in the plot (how they'll make use of the genetics theme), the graphics (how they'll change the look of battles to maximize the 3D graphics), the region itself (the geography and culture of the region), and the characters and how they fit into the plot (especially the rival/s. I'm interested in seeing what characterization they have for the rival/s this time).

Needless to say, I'm interested in pretty much everything about the new generation, but these what I'm most excited about.

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

I'm looking forward to seeing the new Pokemon. The start of a generation is really interesting in that regards since I try out a lot of new Pokemon and see what works for my team. It should be especially interesting with these games due to the worldwide release, so there won't be a lot, if any, information on stats and what attacks they learn available online before I get them. I'm hoping that the plot will be good like the plot for B/W was and I'm definitely looking forward to all of the new characters. The rivals in the last generation were great and Team Plasma is my favorite evil team, so I'm hoping that the new characters that are introduced in X/Y will be interesting and enjoyable to see as I progress through the games.

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

I'm looking forward to:

*New Pokémon
*Characters (Player characters/rival/gym leaders/evil team/etc)
*The plot
*The region and its locations
*New Pokedex listings
*New gameplay additions
*New battle mechanics
*Online features and 3DS connectivity features
*The new 3D graphics and models

Imagine "Atomic Bomb" attack in Full 3D.

Re: What are you most looking forward to?

The new pokemon. I always find that to be the most exciting thing to start with. What type combinations the starter Evo's will be, if any. Im also curious to see what Evo's of old pokemon they come up with, since there are a few I'd like to see. Also interested in what new type combinations they come up with, and what type's the Pseudo legendary will be this time around. Once the Games get closer to release I'll start getting more interested in the gym leaders and Elite four, what types they'll specialise in. And of course the Villain plot.

Not only am I excited for the new music in the soundtrack, I also can't wait to hear how they reorchestrate familiar songs that appear in every game, such as the pokemon center theme, evolution, the pokemart, and most specifically, the main theme itself. We sorta got a bit of what it could be, can't wait for the full thing!

If they release Miiverse integration with 3DS before this comes out, it would be just perfect for me.

What I'm really looking forward to is the possibility of real innovation from the creators this time around...specifically with the Pokemon. The designs seems to be getting lamer and lamer... Besides that, after introducing all these gods of the universe...there really isn't too much mystery left. Hopefully we get new and INTERESTING legends and mysteries, much higher difficulty, deeper story, wild pokemon that make leveling to 100 not mind-numbingly tedious, track-able EVs and IVs, some interesting twist on battles...that doesn't involve 4 vs 4 or more battles, cool new types and FINALLY...space travel. The ability to find Pokemon on ANOTHER planet...possibly more info on the various moon stone pokemon. A lot more to do after beating the Elite 4 would be nice, more online options and so on. This really seems like it will either make or break this franchise.

Definitely the new Pokemon. Even though I never love all the new designs, I like seeing what they come up with. And there's always a handful I really like. I'm also excited to see what the storyline is like; they've gotten progressively more complex as the series continues, and I'm hoping to see more of that. Gen V did some interesting things, such as Gym Leaders being more involved in the plot, and I'd like to see more of that as well. Of course, I'm also looking forward to seeing what it's like playing a handheld Pokemon game with new graphics; while each generation has had updates, they're always sprites, so I'm curious to see how the brand new look works.

People have complained about the new designs since at least Gen III; regardless of what they look like, there will be people who find the new Pokemon "uninspired". And the post-E4 content has always been semi-mediocre. It's really there to extend the play time a little and to finish off the 'dex. Both the post-game play and the new Pokemon have been criticized for years, and yet the franchise continues, and the games sell like hotcakes. I don't see how Gen VI will be the game that makes or breaks the franchise.

It seems to be losing it's popularity, if there isn't some radical and unique change, I think that most people will conclude that Pokemon will never evolve (punny) and just keep being recycled.

The franchise seems to go through phases of popularity, in the US anyway. Now that a lot of the original target audience has reached young adulthood, we're seeing it climb back up in popularity. Even a lot of people who aren't hardcore fans pick up the newer games; I used to work in electronic retail, and I'd sell the game to older guys who typically play games like CoD. I also became known as "the Pokemon guy" and parents would bring in their kids for information on the games. Just because it doesn't dominate pop culture here anymore doesn't mean that it's not popular or that it doesn't sell. And I'm by no means an expert on pop culture in Japan, but my understanding is that Pokemon is firmly entrenched in pop culture there, much as Disney is here in the US.

Mario games still continue to sell well, even though they don't really change that much. Sure, there are side games that change up the format (which Pokemon also does), but most of the games consist of going through several time-based levels while trying to save a princess. There are graphic updates, and game-specific gimmicks, but the format doesn't really change. And honestly, major changes to how a popular game works can actually hurt a franchise. As much as people complain about wanting innovation, they tend to like the comfort of familiarity. I agree that Pokemon needs to make little changes with each game to keep it fresh (which they do with new Pokemon, evolution methods, and regions), but I don't think that there's anything major they could change that wouldn't alienate their core base.

The core aspects can remain the same with major changes. As an example, think of Mario 64 vs Super Mario World. With an RPG, you need a story, and recycling the same story with a main character that doesn't even speak gets stale. Perhaps more sidequests with steadily downloadable missions and such. More puzzles, actual bosses instead of pokemon that MAY be higher levels than you, things that aren't pokemon for instance. Something with high stats and an obscene amount of health. Options that can influence the story in positive and negative ways, even resulting in a game over. Based on some of the screen shots, it SEEMS like there will be more puzzle and platform elements, which is really great. I'd like puzzles and stuff along the lines of Golden Sun.
