I tend to always lean towards fire types as my favorite starters. Though Treecko is the only exception where I like grass over fire.

My favorite is a tie between Fennekin and Litten, though. I love cats and foxes!

Here is my list of my favorite starters in each gen:
Gen I - Bulbasaur
Gen II - Cyndaquil
Gen III - Torchic
Gen IV - Piplup
Gen V - Snivy
Gen VI - Fennekin
Gen VII - Popplio

If I find the starter to be really cute and I really like it's evos, then I pick them.

By Type:
Favorite Grass - Rowlet
Favorite Fire - Too hard to pick.
Favorite Water - Mudkip

By Generation:
I - Squirtle (I really like all 3 though)
II - Totodile
III - Mudkip
IV - Chimchar (I really like all 3 though)
V - Oshawott/Tepig tie (all 3 are pretty meh)
VI - Chespin
VII - Rowlet/Litten tie

Favorite Overall: Mudkip

Favorite Regional Trio (taken as a whole): Kanto or Sinnoh

IV - Chimchar
V - Snivy
VI - Froakie
VII - Rowlet

With Totodile being my favorite one overall.

Ooh, lets see

Gen I: Squirtle

Gen II: Cyndaquil

Gen III: Mudkip

Gen IV: Chimchar

Gen V: Oshawott

Gen VI: Fennekin

Gen VII: Rowlet

My absolute favourtie is Cyndaquil. Because while Chikorita was my first starter, Cyndaquil/Typhlosion was the first one I beat a game with.
(I still love Chikorita and its evolutions though)

Here's my list:
Gen I: Charmander - Guess I'm just a generic person
Gen II: Chikorita - I didn't like the Gen II starters much, but I can't wait for Mega Megananium!
Gen III: Torchic - First Pokemon I chose
Gen IV: Piplup - Empoleon is seriously cool
Gen V: Oshawatt - I just loved razor shell, an the whole Dewott thing
Gen VI: Froakie - I mean when you've got a ninja that's a frog...
Gen VII: Popplio - I just thought this one was a nice chance from what looked like battling pokemon, something actually beautiful was there now.

Gen I: Bulbasaur
Gen II: Cyndaquil
Gen III: Mudkip
Gen IV: Turtwig
Gen V: Oshawott
Gen VI: Chespin
Gen VII: Popplio

Grass: Turtwig
Fire: Cyndaquil
Water: Popplio

Overall: Cyndaquil

It's really heartening to see each starter with at least one vote here, you know. It shows that everyone's got their fans.

Gen 1 – Squirtle
Gen 2 – Chikorita
Gen 3 – Mudkip? Kind of tough; I like all three of them about the same.
Gen 4 – Piplup. It's close between him and Chimchar.
Gen 5 – I dislike all of them. Tepig, if I must choose.
Gen 6 – Froakie
Gen 7 – Rowlet

Generation 1: Charmander

Bulbasaur gives Charmander some extremely fierce competition here, but in the end, my heart caves in at the mere sight of Charmander, just as it always has since Day 1. Starting out as a seamless blend of cute and cool, and then evolving to become cooler and cooler. Even its Mega Evolutions. Especially its Mega Evolutions. Yes, both of them.

Generation 2: Totodile

I basically have the same things to say about Totodile as I do Charmander, except this one is a much easier decision because I've just never been all that enamored with Chikorita or Cyndaquil. They're okay, I guess. I do know that Typhlosion is my least-favorite Fire Starter. But neither of them look as good and rounded, nor are they as useful, as Totodile. Croconaw's slight caveman look is great. Plus, I've always loved alligators and crocodiles.

Generation 3: Treecko

Too freaking cool for school, this one. I love how sly but relaxed it looks. However, Mega Sceptile doesn't exactly amaze, although none of the Hoenn Starter Megas do, really, and at least Mega Sceptile aims for something more off-beat and therefore interesting.

Generation 4: Turtwig

Strong competition from Chimchar, but where Turtwig edges the Chimchar line out is in its transitional consistency. I mentioned in another thread fairly recently that while I love Infernape and that it's my favorite Fire/Fighting Starter, a criticism I aim at it is that the flame inexplicably jumps from the tail to the head. No such problem with Turtwig, who progresses smoothly to ultimately become a cool scaled-down world turtle, which is a nice and instantly recognizable myth to use for one of the Starters of Sinnoh. Grass/Ground is also lovely. And that name! Torterra. Just sounds awesome.

Generation 5: Tepig

Smooth transitional consistency compared to the other two trainwrecks (okay that sounds harsh, and to be clear, I don't hate the Snivy or Oshawott lines by any stretch, but... what happened there, man?), and a design that, as I'll plagiarize from myself in the aforementioned Fire/Fighting Starter thread, oozes personality, and has a fun signature move.

On the downside, it's Fire/Fighting yet again, but Gen 5 as a whole just wasn't a good time for interesting Starter typings.

Generation 6: Froakie

When images of Greninja first leaked, I thought it was kind of the cleverest thing ever and I remember there being a lot of doubters. Well, I stood by you, Greninja, and you didn't disappoint. And then I stood by you when it leaked that Ash-Greninja would be in the games, and you came through once again (although I will admit that I was awfully wrong about the exact mechanism of transformation). I hate to sound like I'm gloating, because there's no point in that, but Greninja and I do have a rather positive history. I loved the first images and wanted them to be real, and later I wanted Ash-Greninja to be in the games, and so it was, both times. While I don't particularly love Froakie, Frogadier and Greninja are just so slick, much in the same way that the Treecko line is. Water/Dark is a brilliant, fun typing, and this line will always be my favorite to play through XY with. Oh, and for once, the odd design transitions have a nice reasoning behind them - yes, Greninja loses the bubbles, but that's because bubble nests are used to shelter frog eggs. It's a youth-based thing that Greninja would have no need for.

For the record though, I'm a huge fan of the Chespin and Fennekin lines as well. In fact, either Gen 6 or Gen 4 is probably my favorite group of Starters overall.

Generation 7: Rowlet

Yeesh. Better luck next time, Water Starters! Anyway, I was sold on Rowlet pretty much immediately - just as I was very happy to see a mammalian Grass Starter in Gen 6 after five generations of reptiles, this time we get a bird, and I love birds. I like the Robin Hood/Green Arrow aesthetic change from Dartrix to Decidueye. Becoming Grass/Ghost was a massive curve-ball (and kind of a team-ruiner because I'd built my team around the assumption that it would be Grass/Flying), but I dig it, especially since it allows it to have Spirit Shackle, which is an amazing signature move in terms of name, animation, and effect.

I'd like to keep picking fire starters FOREVER but they've disappointed me a lot in Generations they weren't chosen.

If we're talking only about the first stage then Treecko is my favorite and Chikorita and Bulbasaur are close seconds. Honorable mention goes to Snivy.

If you're referring to the whole evolutionary line then the Treecko one is still my favourite.

My favorites among ALL stages are Grovyle and Delphox which are also one of my top favorite Pokemon ever. Honorable mentions go to Prinplup, Bayleef, and Treecko.
