Have you ever had a moment where you actually managed to safely defeat a gym leader without being too clobbered in the process? Yet you found yourself surprised with people ranting about how difficult that particular Gym Leader was? What about Gym Leaders that everyone dismissed as too easy, yet you actually had troubles with it?
In starting this:
Overrated:
Whitney's Miltank. Okay, she wasn't really easy either, but I managed to safely defeat that Miltank without any of my boys and girls fainting, and that was on all of my runthroughs. On my first runthrough, Miltank didn't use Attract at all for some reason - although even if she did, there was no point anyway, due to my Graveler being female. And I don't remember if I used the in-game trade female Machop on my very first try... (I did so in my second runthrough.) Her rollout was a bit of a nasty surprise, but even that failed to take out either of my Pokémon.
Underrated:
Maybe this is not underrated, but given that people think the Kalos Gym Leaders are easy, I'll have to put this here.
Grant's was an example of "really tempting to not do any homework, but is actually required if you don't want any screw-ups". Playing Pokémon for the first time in ten years, I learnt the hard way that: a) Type advantages doesn't guarantee a victory when you don't have the stats/movesets to back them up; and b) There will always be new combinations of dual-typings to screw you over. (The last two game that I played were Crystal (GSC) and Red (RBY).) The four Pokémon that I intended to use were Bulbasaur, Froakie, Riolu, and (in-game trade) Steelix. Because I didn't check any game previews or anything, I didn't know of the double typings that I'll be up against. This meant that Bulbasaur, Froakie, and Riolu ended up of being no use, since Bulbasaur ended up being type-disadvantaged, and Froakie and Riolu were frail defensively. And their "super-effective attacks weren't of much help. (Of course, it did not help that I kept most of my Pokémon unevolved, which of the difficulties in doing that I found out only retrospectively. The reason for this is because I wanted my Pokémon to learn moves faster.) If it was not for Steelix and her better attack/defense stats, (and better type-advantages against Amaura) then I might have lost that battle. I didn't overlevel any of the aformentioned four Pokemon.
Thinking about it now, it probably could have been easy, but at the time, it certainly did make me stop laughing at Rock-type Pokémon and their numerous type weaknesses.

So, let's start that rant-fest shall we? :naughty:
