I'm putting this here, because people kept arguing about it in the other thread, and then argued over who would make the thread. So I will.

The two main definitions (correct me if I'm wrong) are everything that can be skipped without affecting the story, and everything not taken from the games' plot. What specifically would you call "filler?"

EDIT: I made the poll under the assumption that the overarching plot (such as the current Galactic plot) would not count as filler no matter what. In retrospect I probably should have been 100% specific about that. Just assume that all of the poll options except for the first one and "everything" exclude such episodes from filler.

And episode that has no effect in later episodes, or doesn't resolve a problem from previous episodes, maybe?

I pretty much made a list before. If you were to watch the show and skip the fillers, here is how it would be:

- Watch any episode where the main characters capture or evolve one of their Pokemon

- Watch any Gym episode

- For AG/DP, watch any Contest episode

- Watch the Grand Festival

- Watch the league

- Watch any episode with the villain teams, (whether it be Team Rocket, Team Magma/Aqua, Pokehunter J, or Team Galactic)

- Watch any mini-arc that is related to an important event, like the tag battle arc in DP, or the St. Anne episodes.

- Watch any episode where some character development or backstory happens.

- Watch any episode where a game character or location is visited. (this is debateable though)

- Watch any episode where the rival of the region appears, such as any Gary/Paul/Barry/Drew/Harley/Zoey/Kenny episode.

- Watch the first ep and last ep of every region.

Those are what I consider "important" episodes for each region.

I voted "everything".

!#@%$#@%
I'm so stupid, I became serious again and voted for my option ( Option 3, except important character development is not filler either ) instead of voting to everything... I should get into crazy mode more often

I voted everything too.
Weedle taught me that my entire life is a lie.
EVERYTHING.
IS.
FILLER.

An episode that can be skipped with no consequences is what I call filler.

Which is why DP117 is a filler, ii kanji.

Exactly. Weedle has understood the meaning of life. GUYS WE SHOULD ALL LEARN FROM HIM!!!

Wrong reason - it's because we've never had a talking Nyasu in the games. FACT.

Shiny Metagross can't learn the move Lock On. I think that's more important.

I'm being serious about the rest of my post though.

Maybe :/ I still think a talking Nyasu who can cook ramen is worse *sigh*

(Ok, so you're right :p But I still choose to refuse to see sense!)

I want to vote "Everything" so bad.

I think the only thing you're missing is, "episodes that explain a certain feature of Pokemon". And I don't mean small things, like, "Oh! Electric beats water!", but episodes that feature, say Poffin creation and such.

I voted for Option 3, except important character development is not filler either, but I see problem with the definition for important character development. Did Tanks for Memories! count as Filler? Of course there is small character development for Dawn and Happiny learned new move in it, but other then that, it was very boring ad forgettable episode. And what about Pika and Goliath? Yes, there were confirmation Pikachu is not going to evolve but we already knew that, it didn't affect show in any form and the only important thing here was Jessie James and Meowth slole Ash's Thunderbolt. I personally consider both these episodes filler, but I can see why someone else who answer like me in the poll will not consider these episodes as filler.

Anything boring and unnecessary. Meaning reruns over the summer while we wait FOREVER to get to Goldenrod.

Happiny learned new move in it,

That's automatically not a filler, it counts as an "important event" like am evolution or whatever

Pika and Goliath?

- Thunderstone, Pika not wanting to evolve = continuity, which shouldn't be counted as filler

- Ash lose his Thunderstone

- Paul appear and while the appearance isn't that big - it IS important, since for the first time Paul actually stay to watch Ash's rematch and see Ash win (instead of leaving right after Ash's lose like Oreburgh Gym) so it seems to me a very important development in their rivalry

- Pikachu learned some special move from Raichu, didn't it? they talk about it in the first Wallace episode so you can't really skip the ep, you won't get what they're talking about

And you have to admit this is some kind of character development episode for Ash/Pikachu/Paul (even if Ash/Pikachu went through it before) and I think we should never count character development as filler

...whatever, the whole show is a filler

i thought a filler was traditional a way to keep the anime from getting ahead of the Manga. but in pokemon this dosent realy count cause the Manga and the Anime are way different @_@
