Okay! So I know that episodes during the Johto saga get a lot of flack for being dull, uneventful, and just pointless in general. But what did you actually enjoy during that region.

For me, despite Johto's reputation for having unnecessary fillers, I would have to say that the vast majority of episodes are worth keeping around: either because they were essential to the story, or because they were good to decent fillers. I enjoyed the episodes featuring the Sprout tower, Sentret, Sudowoodo, and the two centered around Wobbuffet.

I also think that Johto got much better during the second half. The Whirl Islands Arc really had something unique and different to offer offer. And we had an epic conclusion to that with the Lugia episodes. Plus, I also liked the two-part Red Gyrados episode. Then, we had the episodes leading up to the final Gym Badge, which really had something to offer, followed by the Larvitar Arc, and finally concluded with the Johto League.

Another thing that I really liked during Johto was the music, or at least what they used in the Japanese version. I am a big fan of the Johto Region music (which for some reason didn't get used in the series until the Spinarak episode), as well as the music from Revelation Lugia, which was used quite often during mid to late Johto (starting with the Murkrow episode to be precise). For me, there were some Johto episodes in which the assortment of music saved it from being complete dullsville. Such was the case with the episodes featuring the Courier Pidgey, Natu, and Zapdos.

I liked Ash's capture of Phanpy, Heracross and Bayleef. I felt the other three could have been given to Misty/Brock.

Let's face it, Misty should have won Totodile in the episode they battled, Ash didn't need it at all. It also looks odd that Misty is the only main character without a starter Pokemon.

I did enjoy some of the TR arcs toward the end, Claire's Gym arc was fantastic, and the Larvitar arc and the league eps were good.

The last time I reviewed the Johto episode list, I think I chopped off about 65-70 episodes that I didn't like at all. So that means I generally enjoyed about 80 episodes from Johto...which more or less puts it in the same length as Kanto. I guess you can say I enjoyed half of it.

It was nice and quick XD

Ok, well, I thought most of Johto was just cute. It was Pokemon the way I remember it- carefree and honest. The plots of the Johto episodes were extremely repetitive and predictable, but I still really apreciated the show.

It was simple, so I could focus more on the Pokemon, and less on whatever exciting event Ash and co. were getting into.

The last year or so of Johto had its bad episodes here and there, but overall it's pretty good. Lots of multi-episode story arcs, Team Rocket the organization being more present than ever before or after, character focus (Larvitar!), and to top it all off it had the satisfying conclusion to the original series that was the Silver Conference (pity about that last episode sucking). It was the turning point of the series after which the quality continued to rise in AG and rise even higher in DP. Overall, to use the dub's divisions, Master Quest is my second favorite portion of the original series, second to Adventures on the Orange Islands.

It's also pretty notable that throughout Johto, we had several characters reappear: Duplica, Sakura and the Kimono Sisters, Casey, Richie, Liza, Madame Muchmoney, Koga's-sister-whose-name-I-can't-remember, Suzie, and I think a couple others. Kinda cool.

Amusingly, Johto has some of the best fillers of the series period. To name... let's say, oh, ten of the top of my head: the Houndour episode, the Stantler episode, Fly Me to the Moon, the Ninetales episode, Ignorance is Blissey, the Scizor episode, The Wayward Wobbuffet, The Superhero Secret, Air Time, and UnBEARable.

And Movie 3 is hands down my favorite movie. 5's pretty enjoyable, too.

Oooh, this is making me so nostalgic. Where are those stupid Johto boxsets already? =P Especially since all the TJJ and JLC DVDs are out of print.

I was younger then but I remember it being fun to watch, my favorite episode was the one with Ash catching Noctowl.

I didn't watch it.
:x

only season I didn't watch really at all.
I mean I've seen some episodes, but I barely saw anything, or even knew what was happening. I just heard the little ol' rants about the season ..so I never went back to watch it ...and besides I was so bored of that trio anyways. o:

Everyone's already mentioned the good parts, but I want to say how much I loved the Yogirasu arc. I wasn't expecting something so emotional at that point in the series. The part where Satoshi relives what it went through as an egg was especially intense, not to mention the classic The Unown of the Mysterious World! That was some DP quality stuff.

I really hope we run into it and its mother in the filler saga.

Some of the earlier Johto episodes were great. The fillers up to the Bugsy battle were well thought out and actually entertaining. To name a few, I liked the episode where Snubull keeps biting Meowth's tail or when Ash and Misty were competing for a Totodile.

The gym battles could have been better if Ash didn't use Cyndaquil and/or Pikachu for each one. Totodile, Noctowl, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Phanpy did not receive much screentime gym-wise.

Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Phanpy and Heracross weren't used in a single Gym battle in Johto at all. :/

The writers must not have been keeping track which Pokemon were in which Gym, because nowadays they make sure each one has a time to shine.

I can't say. I stopped watching mid season 4

Spell of the Unown was, however, friggin phenomenal

Nothing.

Oh, well, except the final episodes of the whole saga. I was like " FINALLY, we're off to Hoenn. ".

The last episodes were pretty good (including the Pokémon League, of course!) Also, Air Time and Just Waiting on a Friend were both great examples of filler episodes. Write that many of them, and you're almost bound to get a few right. I also liked Bayleef and Politoed a lot. Not many Pokémon developed much, them included, but I liked their personalities.

And Spell of the Unown was easily one of the best movies of the series. It is one of the few movies that I think you could get a non-Pokémon fan to tolerate (assuming they're into anime/fantasy enough).

I liked some of the pokemon development. Not all, but some. Chikorita was awesome and Cyndaquil was just cool because of his epic close-range dodging. Wobbuffet was also awesome in this arc, when he was actually an activate part of Team Rocket. The episodes focused on Larvitar were also pretty awesome.
Oh, and Ritchie made for a very interesting rival.

One hilarious scene with Pikachu poking ash. I would have sworn that was loved by all.

If you don't think too much about character development and such things, Johto was pretty good
A lot of people exaggerate with their view of that saga but I think it was great... nothing that can get compared to AG/DP by the writing queality but it's still good - especially the "Master Quest" part

I actually hate the johto episodes the most of all. They were boring, and none of Ash's pokemon evolved (except chicorita). Kanto and Hoenn episodes were both a lot better.

The Johto fillers, in my opinion, were better than the Hoenn fillers.

When I was first watched Johto as a kid, I remembered liking the action and the battles in the episodes. I also liked seeing Team Rocket.

Now, I liked Master Quest a lot more when the digital coloring came into place. It was interesting seeing Larvitar. The league battles and interactions were pretty good as well. Great music as well, as well as the good old slapstick humpr.

The first year was great, the last year was great, specifically from Falkner's Gym up to Whitney's, that was pretty good. Also from Master Quest to the final episode, those were good as well, espically the Red Gyarados arc, Larvitar, and the League. But between Whitney and the Whirl Islands Arc, it was just a chore to watch episodes at 10 am, especially for a 10 year old, it just wasn't fun anymore.

I liked the 1st English Opening of it! It was catchy... And I some times don't like English songs...
