I was wondering, what do you name your characters? All my boys are named Dave or Hiro (don't ask) and my girls are named Kate.

I just kept mine the way they were, except to see if they had alternate coloring in Pokemon Stadium.

In Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald:

Torchic: Phoenix
Mudkip: Aquaria
Treeko: Lotus

I always try and pick a female starter, thus the female-like nicknames.

I don't usually name my starters, but when I first started playing Pokemon Blue, I named my Squirtle Squirt. I changed it to Blast, later, because a Blastoise named Squirt is just weird. I did this again, without changing it to Blast, in Fire Red, mostly for nostalgia.

In my Diamond version, I named my Chimchar Hikuzaru, after it's Japanese name.

It's now named Goukazaru, for Infernapes Japanese name.

I've never named my starter until I saw the pokemon for D/P, at which point I decided that I would get the fire monkey (didn't have an english name at the time), and name him Aditya. And so I did. It had some kind of meaning, but I don't remember what...

hmmm...

Blue: Charmander/Charcoal
Gold: Cyndaquil/Cinder
Sapphire: Mudkip/Trigger
LGreen: Squirtle/Gunner
Pearl: Turtwig/Forrest

silver- Cyndaquil/Roddick
Ruby- Torchic/Blazer
Sapphiere-Mudkip/Gamabunta
emerald-Treeko/Lewa
Pearl-Piplup/Mumble (jump and move now)
Diamond-Turtwig/Crush

I always name my Pokemon in general something cliche'd according to their type.

For instance, a female fire Pokemon would be named Ember.

Red - "Lucille" - Squirtle (had restarted the game with a Bulbasaur named Bulboris as well)
Yellow - "Trainer" - Pikachu - character name was PIKACHU
Silver - "Casey" - Totodile - (after my dog at the time)
Gold - "Flametard" - Cyndaquil
Crystal - Chikorita, not named.
Ruby - "Neo" - Mudkip (this was BEFORE I saw the Matrix movie, folks)
Sapphire - "BOB!" - Torchic - coincedentally, my character was also named BOB!
Emerald - "Tsuyoshi" - Torchic
LeafGreen - "Melmei" Bulbasaur
Diamond - "Artunicus" - Piplup

I named the girl Hikari and the boy Kouki (DP). The rival is Shigeru (as in one of the choosable names). In Emerald, the boy is Yuuki, Ruby-girl is Mei (tired of Haruka and wanted to come up with an own name). In Green, it's Midori. Also Midori and Aka in FR/LG.
The Pokemon often keeps their names, but I named Pocchama, in my US Pearl version, Fanguin (I don't really know where I got the name from), in Diamond, Hikozaru keeps its name, I like Goukazaru, the name of the final evolution.
In LG, Fushigidane is Fushigi and FR Hitokage is Hinoko.
Bashaamo (R/S/E) often keeps its name (it's so cool, I like it).

I always give my trainer my name. My rivals are:
Firered: n00b
Leafgreen: Gary
Emerald: Brendan
Sapphire: May
Ruby: May
Diamond: Noel
Pearl: Probably Gary.

The only time I ever named my starter was in Ruby. It was a Mudkip and I think its name was Kip. o_O Don't ask me why.

In Pearl I have this uber powerful Charizard that my sister named 'AGNOIWNVY' or something like that. It's also traded and the original trainer game has long since been deleted, leaving me no way to change it. -_- Crap.

Red: Charmander/Ash
Blue: Squirtle, though I never got a chance to name it.
Yellow: Pikachu/Sparky (Bulbasaur/Bud, Charmander/Charcoal, Squirtle/Hydro)
Gold: Totodile/Bubbles
Silver: Chikorita/Chiko
Crystal: Cyndaquil/Cynder
Ruby: Treecko/Lithrael
Sapphire: Mudkip/Lily
Emerald: Torchic/Petra
FireRed: Charmander/Hermione
LeafGreen: Bulbasaur/Venus
Diamond: Hikozaru/Charmaine
Pearl: Turtwig/Terra

FireRed: Charmander/Drago
Emerald: Mudkip/Muddy
Diamond: Chimchar/Kendo

I kinda meant what you named your character. I just changed the title now. You can put both if you want. My Infernape's name is Char after Charmont in Ella Enchanted.

I did the same thing I do in all games: Name the character Dani or Danielle if female and Daniel if male. Or when there's only room for initials I go by DAN because my brother and I share the initials DAL.
