Gen II seems to be the most popular Generation. I've even seen it referred to as the "Golden Age" of Pokemon. I've loved all the generations, save for Gen III (which I LIKED, just didn't LOVE), but I really doubt that Gen II was the perfection that many people seem to think it was.

So, just for fun, let's name things about Gen II we did NOT like. For me it was:

-Mom spending my money on frivolous decoration items that I'm never going to use
-The lack of involvement with Team Rocket (I got so excited when one appeared at the power plant, thinking that there would be another story, but alas...)
-Whirpool. Not only do you use it just once, but it's a really crappy offensive move.

Whirlpool is used to trap pokemon. Not really for offense.

i'd say the rot of evolutions and capture methods started here. Roaming mons can gtfo. srsly

I liked the roaming mons, it made the game seem all the more adventurous and whatnot...to me, anyway.

I loved Gen II. But heres a couple things that I wasnt to excited about:

-Not being able to catch Pikachu in Johto, or a few of the other JOHTO Pokemon for that matter
-Having such difficulty finding evolution stones.

About the stones...is it that hard to visit Bill's grand dad and fulfill his requests?

- The box system was pretty terrible. It was a headache to move Pokémon from the party to the PC and to other boxes within the PC. The games after it certainly improved that aspect if you can't admit anything else.

- While not really an enormous flaw persay, but the game can easily be completely broken by the time you got to Ecruteak City since you had access to the Time Machine and can trade your Pokémon from the RBY games (which you've probably rare candied up to Lvl 100) After that you could steamroll your way through the entire game in half the time. Other games at least had the added challange of only implementing this after you beat the E4 with a team of Pokémon.

- Team Rocket was kind of a joke. Considering that where was no leader persay... Just two admins in charge of things.

- Since all Pokémon were just crammed into the games, it led to some uneven showcasing. The previous 151 got alot of praise while few of the newer mons were very useful, if they were even found.

- The evolution stones were made much much rarer. Once you used them, that was it. Except for the Sun and Moon stones. They were much commoner, but only on certain days.

Kanto was handled poorly in GS since they removed half of the places to visit, and the Johto region was too small.

A lot of the new Pokemon were also unusable due to a lack of an evolution, such as Aipom and Murkrow.

The bad box system made me mad whenever I ran out.

The low levels.

The weird distribution of the different and new pokemon.

The scarcity of evolutionary stones.

Things people have said:
-Evolution stones.
-Whirlpool
-No Safari Zone

Something I'm surprised nobody said:
-Elite 4 was way too easy. I just recently played through again, and I swept the entire Elite 4 with a Scyther. A fucking Scyther.

Things that people said that I don't think were that bad:
-Mom saving money. She bought moon stones, and you could choose to have her not save your money.
-Box system. I saw this as a major improvement over RBY. The "Move Pokemon" feature really made my day, and I was glad that Bill would call you and warn you to change your box.

Other things I didn't like:
-That guy that gave you the Shuckle. I just didn't like that little motherfucker.
-The rival. I like the rival to be an egotistical ass hole, but this guy was downright ruthless. I don't think he should be called a rival as much as just an enemy.
-Whitney's Miltank.

I'll post more as I think of them.

I didn't like my mom spending my money (though this was already mentioned), and no Safari Zone. I know people don't really like them, but I've always thought it was a kind of thrill just catching pokemon in an expedition like manner.

It was a big improvement over the first games, where you could only deposit or withdraw at a time. Gen II introduced the Move system that's been used ever since. Really, the only thing wrong with it was that it saved every time you moved something, which slowed things down a bit.

The same can be said of any of the games. Just get one you've beaten before (or a friends' game) and port over a bunch of really powerful creatures to a new one. Unless you're the first person to own any game in that compatibility family.

What I didn't like was people calling you. Yeah, it was cool, but when they interrupt your training to tell you about the Rattata they almost caught (on the subject of which, what the Sam Hill is a bug catcher doing trying to catch a Rattata anyway?), it gets old, fast. Crystal did it better, with extra personalities. I'd like to see that really fleshed out in HGSS. Maybe you could have individual relationships with your contacts. It's nice to dream.

I didn't like some of Neo-Kanto's nerfed features (underground tunnels, Pokemon tower, Mt Moon, etc.).

Elite 4 was too easy.

There wasn't a whole lot of plot to neo-kanto(even if it was a lot of fun to visit just to see how things had changed in the 3 or so years since rby)

The evolution stones weren't in the store anymore.

Some pokemon weren't available till the end of the game(larvitar comes to mind)

The <insert foul language here) batteries die so you can't save anymore. I also didn't like the roaming pokemon.

None of that stuff was/is a big deal but it was kinda annoying. I still love gsc.

Probably the only thing I thing I didn't like about gen II is the lack of a safari zone. The pc storage wasn't that bad, compared to gen I.

I do hope that they bump up the level of NPC Trainer's Pokemon in the remakes. The difficulty level of the original GS games was abysmal.

I liked that Mom saved my money. She bought me Pikachu and Charmander dolls for my room.

I hated that they hyped the new Johto Pokemon for ages before the game came out, and then when you actually started to play GS there were KANTO POKEMON ^@$%#*ING EVERYWHERE.
The Johto Gym Leaders didn't even have any Johto Pokemon up until the third Gym.

-Awful level distribution, and you know, if they just completely redid the Elite 4, then the level down would have been acceptable. Kanto Gym Leaders being too easy isn't really a problem like some people complain about, after all you're already a champion.

Kanto Pokemon overshadowing Johto Pokemon, especially on Gym leader's teams.

-Some Johto Pokemon not being available in Johto, and that some of them you couldn't even get until after the Kanto side-quest. The later might have been more acceptable if there were a bit more unique species of Pokemon....

-Level 100 Charizard plowing through the game after Ecruteak. Ignoring the bad planning in Game Freak's part, I'm more annoyed about the fandom's complaints of things liek Pal Park not being available until later in the game -_-.

-Cutting out most of what made Kanto more interesting. So what if Warden Slowpoke went on vacation, he could have always come back after you get all eight gym badges (here's hoping he does with Hoenn pokemon in his Safari)

-Not really being clear about the timeline, was it three after Red started his journey or after becoming champion? Why is it that the timeline is still referred to as three years later at the begining of your journey and near the end of the Kanto half?

-Fucking incompetant gym leaders. Hey Whitney, how did you become a gym leader if you're going to cry after every loss? And after being used to automatically being given badges, it took me a long time to realise I didn't have the Plain Badge. Oh and there's Claire, get over yourself, and Blue--well I guess he wasn't as bad as Giovanni. And Jasmine, how nice that you're looking after Ampharos, but come on, just battle me.
The best part was that you could give it back to him after a while.
Its much more fun not to give it back. I mean come on, how many of us are actually going to treat that mold-turtle well enough to get its reward (and what was it again, I'm pretty sure it isn't worth all those hair cuts and massages)
