What do the Japanese think of the dub?

I've never heard of the English dub being brought up by Japanese fans, so I always assumed most weren't aware of how different it was.

I'm sure there are very, very few that know much about it. It's almost comparable to an American following a different foreign dub, or a dub of an American cartoon. There's information available, and they probably hear some random trivia, but few follow it or pay that much attention to it.

Production-wise: Well they did have to censor a few things such as Hiroki's/Hamilton's hair color to avoid lawsuits...

Fan-wise: Well there are Japanese people here on the anime forums expressing their opinions of the dub. My guess is that they like the original better than any dub.

That has nothing to do with the dub though.

I agree that most of them probably have no clue about it. It's like asking Americans what they think of the Spanish Family Guy dub.

There's probably some American Family Guy fans who DO follow the Spanish dub.

Anyway, wasn't there something called Pokemon De English that had a lot of the English dub in it as a teaching tool? Admittedly I don't know much about it, but that's what I gleaned from the commercials.

I doubt they'd really care. They know OFF an english dub, since japanese fansites like Pokésho lists english names for characters along with their japanese ones.

But I really doubt they do.

Do any of you care about how well the Simpsons do in Japan? Aside from just trivia?

the japanese do not know or care about the dub at all. i rarely see them knowing there are even non-japanese fans. obviously some do, but as a majority, they do not know or care.

probably: "what should I care about a dub? I just watch the original. Geez." Or they just plain hate it (like I hate the spanish simpsons)

I actually saw this video on the internet were during the early johto episodes they'd do this thing were they'd try to teach the kids english so they showed them a clip from the show and then the dub.

Yeah, but they stopped that "Pokemon de English" thing before Advanced Generation started.

As far as knowledge of the dub goes...Hidaka Masamitsu apparently had no idea that the dub switched from 4Kids to PUSA, if that tells you anything.

you know, with Pokemon de English, that technically makes the first English theme song an official part of the Japanese version's media, doesn't it?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a lot more Japanese are familiar with at least some aspects of the English version than most of us would think. Aside from de English, the 4th opening (as well as Pokemon4ever) would likely be notable amongst fans for its original footage (and you know some of these otaku, they'll value every frame of animation... or frantically search them for a single pixel's worth of panty shot, either one). I know I recall seeing Pokesho post screenshots from English opening 4 one time, at least.

And Masamitsu might've been unaware of the going-ons with the cast change, but didn't Pokeani mention it in the news at one point? BTW, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the dual audio in the region 2 DVDs for the first three movies yet.
