Simple. Just say what you've named your rivals in the games, and if it isn't something self-explanatory, like "Douchebag" or "Ass-Wipe", tell us why.

Me, I named my rival in S/G/C Angel. He was named after a bully I had in Third Grade. (I know. My bully was named Angel. I laugh about it to this day.)

And in LeafGreen, I named my rival Rich. The joke is that "Rich" is short for what his full name would be, "Richard". While he shortened it to the much spiffier-sounding "Rich", I would call him "Dick" (which is also short for Richard). I think it's pretty funny, anyway.

So, what do you name your rivals?

I just use the default names:

Red: BLUE
Blue: SONY
Yellow: GARY
Gold: SILVER
Silver: GOLD (if I had Silver)
Crystal: SILVER
Ruby: <N/A>
Sapphire: <N/A>
FireRed: GREEN
LeafGreen: RED
Emerald: <N/A>
Diamond: Barry
HeartGold: Soul

Most of the time I just name him after my brother.
I've done that since I was a kid so I just keep doing that.

In the first gen I named him "Gary".
for the 2 gen rival I named him "Gold" (I had the silver version and my character was "Silver").

In FR I got bored and called my rival "n00b"..
and in Diamond I lazily choosed the default name "Barry".

In my Soulsilver I named my rival once more "Gold".

Depends on whether or not I'm feeling childish when I start the game...

But usually, I just go for default.

I usually theme the rival's name with the player character's name, which is why not being able to name whatsherface and Cheren really bugged me...

Like in SS I named my PC "Luo" (from soul) and the rival is "Rae" (heart). I was going to name all of the people within the BW games from art supplies (my PC in Black is "Jessie" from gesso) but the not-being-able-to-name-rivals thing kinda ruined that plan. Boo.

I don't always theme the names together, but I usually have a theme or idea behind them. In HG I named my rival "P.B." from "Passerby Boy." I just ended up calling him "Peanut Butter" after a while, though... Which was my little way of remembering when I named my rival "???" in Crystal, 'cause I thought I was supposed to tell the police guy what the rival literally said his name was. Ah, first grade brain function. Nostalgic.

I always gave my rivals the names of ash's rivals or the names of guys i didn't like. If you've ever seen Kung-Pow: Enter the Fist the parody movie then you'll laugh at this, one time I called my rival Wimploo and another Betty!:lol:

Random names that just happen to pop into my head really. :/

I did that too, and I was really annoyed when I realized that I could name him. I actually started my game over because of that.

I normally name my rivals after ex-boyfriends or someone I generally don't like, just for the lulz... but I tweak the names a little so it's not plainly obvious. My LG rival's name is "Kid," which is part of my ex-best friend's DJ name, but it's just plain enough to sound stupid. :D

This thread seems to be the same as the thread What'd you name your rival? This is my reply of that thread:
Red: Gary
Crystal: First run: ??? (I think he appears with that name so when the I was asked to say the name I said that)
Second run: Silver (I lost the cartridge and bought another one online in 2010 and I knew that the Adventures character is called Silver so I called him that)
Leaf Green: Gary
Pearl: Gary (I did not know the default name)
Platinum: Barry
Soul Silver: Paul (I called him this after Ash's Sinnoh rival)
Blue: Gary
Silver: Silver (the battery of this game ran out or it became loose after about 2 months of owning it and I can't remember what I called it originally but when I replaced the battery in March 2011 I called the rival Silver)
I also have Black, Emerald and Sapphire but you can't choose the names of the rivals in those games.

I tend to name my rivals in a way that they are opposites of my player name.

I'll only list the ones in my current playthroughs,
since my blue, yellow, silver and crystal don't work anymore... ;_;

Anyway...

Sapphire:
- player: Heath (related to later naming theme)
- rival: May ...For obvious reason...

Platinum:
- player: Kiku (= chrysanthemum = flower = spring)
- rival: Flake (snowflake)

Soul Silver
- player: Haru (= spring)
- rival: Fuyu (= winter)

Black:
- player: Hanami (one of the seasoned festivals in Japan)
- rival: ...Since I bought both versions this time, I decided that the "real rival of mine" is the player character from the opposing version.

White:
- player: Shinko (comes from Shinkosai that is autumn festival)
- rival: *check Black version rival*

I named my rival Dipshit in GSC.

Later random trainer says:

"Some Dipshit kid said my Pokemon were weak!"

DP quotes explain it all:

-Professor Rowan:'That Fart...He can't sit still.'

-Fart's mom:'Where is my little Fart?'

Douche
I usually give my rivals pretty basic names. In FireRed, I went with "Green"; Pearl, my brother's name (he did the same to me in Diamond); SoulSilver, "Damien".
Yeah, pretty boring.

You should've spelled it in all lowercase letters. Then it would look like he doesn't even have a name!

"Rival dipsh*t wants to battle!"

"Hey, dipsh*t!"

"Where'd dipsh*t go?"

XD

I name them after people I know in real life.

There's no, deep, hidden meaning to that.
