This may have came up before, but in your opinion, what do you think a pokemon master is? I have thought about it and came up with this:

At the first series the motto "gotta catch em all" I thought a pokemon master was one who caught all pokemon, but now I know thats wrong, no way could anyone catch all pokemon, and even minus legendaries, take too long and be hard to do.

Now I think a pokemon master is someone who knows pokemon inside and out. They know how to look after a pokemons needs, train a pokemon to high standards so it becomes strong as it can (not as Paul does, catch automatically strong pokemon) but do as Ash does and train his pokemon to be strong.

Also a pokemon master must know all about the various moves pokemon can use and types and their weaknesses/strengths and about evolution, how pokemon evolve and why and what they evolve into. Also they must know about the different natures of pokemon and personallities and general day care of pokemon.

A master must know when to release pokemon (like the bye bye butterfree eposidoe when Ash released Butterfree), when not to catch a pokemon and when to help wild pokemon like when the gang helped the group of sheildon find a new home etc... Also know when to trade pokemon, like the Aipom/Buizel trade between Ash and Dawn

I agree with your theory Shinx, because a pokemon master should be someone who not only is good at catching and battling pokemon, but also a person who can understand the pokemon's feelings, etc.

In fact... a pokemon master is the one who has a special link with pokemon... and not only a merely very good trainer/catcher.

Well, at first, a Pokemon master just seemed like someone who loves Pokemon. And it that sense, Ash was already a master.

But now the show's more battle-oriented and it seems like a master is an elite trainer.

I say a Pokemon Master is one who is an expert at all the disciplines of Pokémon:
  • Pokémon Capture
  • Pokémon Training
  • Pokémon Breeding
  • Pokémon Battles
  • Pokémon Contests
Pokémon Master is such a generic term, why apply it soley to those who battle? There could be Capture masters, Master breeders etc.

For one to recieve the title of Pokémon Master, they should be an expert in all those fields. Notice how I separate training and battles? A person could be good at training Pokémon but at the same time is a terrible battler, while another can be a good battler while terrible at training. The Battle Factory tests the trainer soley on their ability to battle.

For one to consider themselves a Master Trainer, they should atleast be able to beat Hoenn's Battle Frontier, since it tests the traints that a Master needs under his/her belt to succeed.

I know Pokemon Master is a general term, but I was thinking of an overall master, a master of all things pokemon. And yeah, a great trainer/battler would be proven if they beat Hoenn/Sinnoh Battle frontiers. Platinums Battle Frontier looks pretty good for that sort of thing.

A truly Pokémon master would bewhat a trainer card with maximum stars in the games is. You must have beaten all gyms and frontier facilities, have beaten the league, Won the grand festival (same as winning all master rank contests) and Completed your pokédex= at least seeing them all, since catching them all in the anime is impossible.

Actually, I'd say a master would not need to see all pokemon... especially when it comes to legendaries, I mean, how many people would have the chance of seeing grintia or Arceus? Very few, and mewtwo too.

Probably no legendaries, in the games you have your national dex complete without legendaries too (allright, that are only event pokemon but you get the point)

It's just a vague title.
Like master of knitting or master of dodge ball.

Although the song "2B a Master" describes it as beating the elite 4 and the present champion but that can't be it since if it was people would stop posting these threads every couple of months.

I use to think it was some one who not only was really good in one of the trainer categories( Battling, Trading, ect.).
but also has to be recognized as one.

Not to mention... Ash wouldn't have any reason to go to Johto, as he already won a league. Plus, I don't think they ever labeled any of the champions or the Elite 4 members as being Pokemon Masters.

Actually, not sure if its the same in the original R/B/G/Y, but in FR/LG when you face your rival as the pokemon master, he says he is the greatest trainer in the world, so referring to himself as a master possibly

And I know there is different masters in pokemon, contest, trainer, battle, breeder and so on, a true pokemon master would be master of all aspects related to pokemon.

Just because they don't call champions masters doesn't mean they aren't.
They're just a type of master, there has to be more then one type of master in Pokemon since there are so many different ways to be good at Pokemon.

He also has a huge ego, so believing in what Blue says really isn't credible.

I'm gonna say a trainer who is rarely defeated, trains his pokemon well, a strong team, won a lot of battles, leagues, and maybe contests...

The term "Master" for me can only be used with a "Field" of something and covers all aspects of this "Field", so for me (to stay in Pokemon Master) it means you are an expert in Training, Battling, Breeding, Knowledge, Contests, Catching, relationships to Pokemon, understanding of Pokemon and their feelings, caring of them and so on. This is something you could call impossible.

A Pokémon master is an elite trainer who is regularly active in battling and possibly even contests if they so choose, and is among the elite trainers, with a vast amount of knowledge and skill in the field of Pokémon. Not unlike masters of anything else, like martial arts or chess. A master does not necessarily have all the Pokémon, and a master is not necessarily a region's champion (though champions are not unlikely to be masters), and a master is not perfect, and is always training.

Someone who gains recognition through their thorough knowledge of Pokemon Battling coupled with an elite battling status. I don't consider a Pokemon Master as someone who has seen all Pokemon/caught them all, as that would be more of a Pokemon Collector in my books.

But most importantly someone who fights and wins with their favourite Pokemon. Not just ones considered to be strong.

This is going to sound corny.

I think that a Pokemon master is versed in all aspects of the Pokemon universe. Someone who truely understands, pokemon and what they are about. A pokemon master is a top coordinator, an league champion, a breeder and a researcher all rolled into one.

A pokemon master has dedicated their life to Pokemon and strives to ensure their wellbeing above his or her own. A Pokemon master also knows that we will never know all there is to know about Pokemon, therefore continues learning all their lives.

Someone who mearly wins battles is just an "ace trainer." One who claims to have "caught them all merley is a collector.

Its all about understanding the spirit of the game.
