One of DP's strengths is the amount of recurring characters compared to previous arcs. What are your opinions on some or all of these new characters from DP?

Uhm... a lot of those have only appeared once.
 
Paul, Barry - Cool, cool. It's great to see Ash have such great recurring rivals after nine years of either having crappy rivals or no rivals. Easily the best part of DP.

Zoey, Kenny - Them, not so much. But this has been covered innumerable times. Not that I dislike them, it's just that they fail in comparison to Drew/Harley and Paul/Barry. And Kenny needs to appear more.

Cheryl, Mira, Riley - Good thing they decided to include these guys. I found Cheryl and Riley to be enjoyable, and adored Mira. Hope the other two tag partners aren't shafted in the future.

Rhonda (and Jack) - I like these guys. They make up for the lack of Gabby and Ty nicely. They need to appear more.

Team Galactic - They're fun when they're around, but they really needed to be more present. TG has the most presence of any "Team Evil" in the entire franchise in the games... why not the anime?

Cassidy and Botch Butch - I was randomly thinking about them again when I woke up yesterday. What the hell was the point of having them pop up in one crappy episode with no explination and then falling off the face of the planet? Did someone just say "y'know, I like Cassidy and Butch, let's have them appear once for absolutely no reason, logic be damned!"? Not to mention they haven't had a good appearance since the baby Lugia arc. And no, I didn't like that Battle Frontier episode they were in.

In any case, it's kinda neat to have so many recurring faces.
 
On that list, I like Team Galactic, Barry, and Conway the best.

Team Galactic just kick ass...they're my favorite evil team since Team Rocket. I really wish they would get more appearances...I just feel like we don't see them enough.

Barry is absolutely awesome and is my favorite rival for anyone, ever. I like Paul and his cruel demeanor, but I prefer Barry's hyperactive and lovable personality. In my personal opinion, he's the perfect rival for Ash.

And Conway...just because...he's Conway. :3

And if Lil Brother hadn't mentioned Butch and Cassidy, I wouldn't have even thought of them. I personally love them and think they don't appear enough. I think the last two episodes they had in the main series (Ole Berate and Switch and Sleight of Sand) were pretty lame, and I wish the writers would go back to making them more menacing and evil, and putting them in episodes that are worth watching.

I'm not really all that crazy about the others. I do like Gary a lot, but he kind of died for me after he dropped his arrogant personality. The other characters are okay, but don't really strike me as all that great.
 
I wouldn't call Paul, Barry, Zoey, and Kenny "recurring characters," mostly because they have some importance to the plot. I would have liked it better if Barry was introduced earlier in the series, and if he had more gym badges in tow.
 
Technically most of these characters affect DP's plot. The Elite 4, Galactic, Pokehunter J, etc. are all major parts of the story.

Even characters like Looker, Brandon and Wallace are involved in what are essentially mini-arcs.
 
Paul is very funny because he upsets Ash, Barry is funny because he's so hyperactive. Kenny is just awesome, and conway is also very funny. Angie was funny in the summer school eps too.
 
I don't really like Paul. I feel like he's basically Gary with no sense of humor, and a touch of the rival from GSC thrown in.

I really do like Team Galactic, and I'm hoping for them to start appearing more often than they do. I don't really care for DP at all except for when Galactic is present. I'm hoping for something fantastic.

Eh. They've been appearing at least once a season since the beginning of time. They don't need a reason. They're Cassidy and Butch. :p I do wish that they were more of a threat like they used to be, but I'm always glad to see them.
 
Butch/Cassidy have been comic relief since the hoso specials.

I think the Baby Lugia arc in Johto was the last time Butch/Cassidy were actually shown to be threatening. After that the hoso's turned them into another goofball team.
 
I'll make a little list

Gary- I love the writers for bringing back Gary. We havent seen to much of him, but its really nice that Ash's original rival is here. Honestly, I think Gary's had more change/development than Ash had D: Its nice to be able to know what hes doing now

Paul and Barry- These two are both good rivals for Ash. Paul is his polar opposite, and Barry is a lot like him. These two are very interesting

Riley- I love Riley. I always have, since I first saw him. Im really glad we got to see someone alive that can use Aura, besides Ash

Team Galactic- These guys are evil enough to be interesting, but not cruel enough for me to dislike *looks a J*

Barry: I hate him. He's got Pokémon already owned by the cast, which bugs me. He's got Staraptor (Ash), Roserade (Drew, perhaps Nando), Heracross (Ash)... I mean, what's next? Another Pikachu? ._.;

Zoey: Great character, but... idk.

Kenny: I don't care about him.

Nando: He's cool, but I wish he made more appearances.

Gary (as a researcher): LMAO, I like Gary the RIVAL.

Conway: Creepy, but cool, I guess. Reminds me of Kyle from A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila.

Angie: :/ *shrug*

Holly: Don't care.

Reggie: I really like him. However, he's got a Staraptor... LOL, sadly. He could have had something else.

Cynthia: She's alright.

Team Galactic: Not enough screentime.

Pokehunter J: Argh, everyone seems to like her, oddly. I don't.

Prof. Rowan: BORING.

Rhonda (reporter for Sinnoh news): Don't care.

Cheryl: Interesting character.

Mira: BORING.

Riley: He is hot, but that's about it.

Pokemon Ranger Kellyn: BORING.

Looker: BORING.

Wallace: He's nice, but I wish we saw more of his Pokémon. Milotic is just annoying.

Brandon: He's got a nice personality and nice Pokémon. I never thought somebody would actually own a Regirock, a Registeel, and a Regice.

Pokehunter J is easily the best villain the show ever had.

I think Lil brother said it perfectly in another thread, she's the kind of character I would have loved to see when I was only 10 years old watching the anime. I do love the more action-oriented elements they've added in recent years, its no longer about Ash helping filler characters with problems, which is why I didn't enjoy Johto much.
 
I don't know all characters mentioned here, but here is what I think about the ones I do know:

Paul: Awesome rival. Pushes Ash to his potential, more so than Gary did. Tries to show that his way is right and Ash should turn to his ways or he won't win, hopefull before the end of the series we will see Ash kick Pauls butt. I like Paul, good rival for Ash to actually try hard against, they both try and prove that their way is best, but so far Paul has come out tops on Ash.

Angie: Meh, an alright character, not too great, not ad either, not fussed on Angie at all

Nando: I like him, he was a funny one for me, have him appear, disappear then suddenly return again. It was good to see someone who started doing contests not just stick to contests like some characters. Granted I have not seen him when he appeared again after so long because Jetix are being lame and won't show anything past the first Fantasia episode so I can't really say much about him

Pokehunter J Best villan so far IMO. Actually IS a villan who actually can do what the TR trio can do, but better, actually capture pokemon, not only that, puts them in a "stasis" for transporting them. I liked how she was in Ranger episodes.

Prof. Rowan Reminds me of the responsible adult, looking out for kids and their pokemon, making sure they play right and act responsable and have fun with their pokemon, his voice kinda represents that too IMO.

Zoey I did not like at first, but she kinda grew on me, not my favourite character, she remids me of the "cool headed" contest person to Dawn like Brock is to Ash when it comes to Pokemon in general.

Cassidy and Biff "ITS BUTCH" *is shot* I like them, comic relief I guess. I like them, how someone could forget Botch "ITS BUTCH" name so much is beyond me. I even wondered how Professor Namba knew when his name was said wrong in the "Sleight of Sand" episode with Hippowdon. Need more screentime to be better.

Cynthia Would be better with more screentime IMO, they have potential to be better, but I don't really have an opinion on them much.

Conway Kinda the freaky nerd, I like him because he acts kind of nerdy with a sort of slight of "dark" feel about him, more so when he sneaks up and flashes his glasses.

Gary (the researcher) He's ok, but nah, Gary the rival was better IMHO.

Team Rocket Trio Do they count? if so, I like them at times, sometimes they ahve good moments, othe times they are lame because they try and do the same things over and over, where they get money and or resources to build their machines is beyond me, they are always hungry over half the time anyway. I liked the nostalgic episode where TR were fat and lost the weight and had original motto in the episode, that was great to bring back memories for me and many other people. I liked wobuffett for a long time, but latley, its stopped feeling good as a comif relief pokemon to me and became less good.

Gardenia Had a few episodes, liked the way she would flip out whens he saw a grass type. Was good while she was there, comic relief I think for grass tpyes.

Are you technically a recurring character if you show up in both eps of a two parter? You haven't actually recurred you've just not gone anywhere. Plus some of them have had less time on screen than some one ep characters.

Aside from the villains and rivals only Conway and Angie strike me as new reoccuring characters really.

I love Shinji. He's possibly the best rival we've ever had on the show. I love how he's a total ass, and isn't all sweet and lovable to his Pokemon. And he acts like a real person would actually act like if their Pokemon lost or whatever. they'd get pretty mad ..not all "OH! YOU'RE AMAZING! WHEE." but yeah. xD He's amazing.

Jun, another great rival for Satoshi. I still wish that they brought him in earlier, and that he was also a friend of Hikari's since in the game they're like best friends (neighbors). But he's still awesome. I love how he kept his game-character, being totally impatient and hyper and loud. And his love for Shinji just wins. :]

NOZOMI. I've loved her ever since I saw her for the first time. I was like "LESBIAN!" ahah. YES. But she has proven herself to be pretty much a full lesbian now in the anime. >] Don't ruin my fun people!
But yeah ..I loved her attitude at the beginning, and how she got mad at people who did contests and gyms, and she would speak her mind. But she's also a very nice and helpful rival for Hikari. AND NOZOMI TOTALLY STILL WANTS HER. even though ..she doesn't show it much anymore. :x m,whaa.

I never liked Kengo. He was like a total dork. I like how they gave Hikari childhood friends. But ..I just could never stand him.

KOHEI! aha. I LOVE HIM. Just how much of a freaking creeper he is.

Reiji ..honestly, I don't like him too much. haha. I love his brother ..but he is just pretty wack. :p

Shirona, she has became my favorite champion. I love how they finally gave us a female champ. And I love how they have given her so many appearances, unlike other champs in the past. She's a sexy.

Team Galactic! GINGA! What got me back into Pokemon. And what made me love D/P ...and actually got me to like Hikari again (since I started watching D/P ahah.) BUT Ooh. I don't even know. I just love how strange all of them are. And they are all so hot. Mars. Saturn. Jupiter. AKAGI. AND OH. the female grunts. those sexy little nerds. I love how a lot of them wear glasses in the anime. xD
But yeah. I really wish these guys would have appeared more. they could have done so much more with them. And they're finally a fully interesting team who is actually kinda a threat and serious. ...I guess you can say I'm kinda in lurve with them all. <3 but it's amazing. aha.

Pokehunter J. She's a sexbeast. I WANT HER SO BADDDDD. LOL. But yeah, she is hot. And she's truly bad. And tries to kill people, and doesn't care. She's an awesome chick. I wish she would appear more as well.

Momo/Miru/Gen. I love that the writers introduced these three into the anime. Especially Miru, she's a cutie. And all their episodes were pretty interesting. I just hope the other two get appearances as well.

Looker. I liked him in the game. Just for the fact that he is such a stalker creep. He always knows where you are. And yeah. :x he's pretty interesting.
 
I am quite pleased with this gen's characters, I think the only memorable one from last gen for me was Harley.

I mean they gave Barry the justice he deserved, and I didn't expect them to do it so well. They kept the fining, the running into you, impatience, unbending determination, and cuteness that made him so good in game. I did not expect him to be a Paul fanboy, but it sorta made sense (in that he likes stronger Pokemon, so that he will win faster).

Team Galactic is even more awsome in the anime than in game. Even though we haven't seen it all yet, they are actually doing more in the anime than in game (the meteorites, the key, iron island, actually going after the orbs, etc). Cyrus is showing a bit too much though (I mean he laughed 0_o).

As for Paul...he's the Silver we never had. That's all I have to say about him.

Nooo!! They're mains! :p Don't push them down to recurring charas!

All the same, I've really liked having lots of recurring charas. It results in less CotDs and more development for most of them. I'll just talk about the ones who I actually consider to be recurring (I mean, the tag battle people? They're hardly recurring! xD Though in case you care, I found all three of them deadly boring, though Gen perhaps slightly less so, if only because the eps he appeared in were at least interesting.)

Shinji and Jun - where do I start?! They are amazing rivals for Satoshi! I love them both individually: Shinji for his horrible, coldness and Jun for his hyperactivity. But I also love how they've affected Satoshi and his own journey. Shinji especially has had a lot of impact (see DP 131/132).

Nozomi, Kengo and Naoshi - are polar opposites to ^ aka. deadly boring. Maybe we were spoiled in AG by the awesome contest rivals Shuu and Harley, and an attempt to replicate them would have pissed me off. However, their replacements are just drab, much like the rest of DP's contest arc. I have grown slightly fonder of Nozomi (especially her dialogue with Shinji >D She went up in my esteem about 500%... not that that's saying much considering where she started off.

Shigeru - is redundant. I'd rather that he'd have stayed in Kanto tbh. He was a great, if largely absent, rival in Kanto/Jouto, but now he fulfils no pupose at all, and seems to have lost most of his personality.

Kouhei (and Honoka) - are brilliant. Kouhei is just awesome - I love his creepy stalker tendancies and hope very much to see him again. Honoka I also liked, and I hope she returns at some point.

Aoi - was lovely, and unlike Lila, I found her crush on Satoshi to be totally adorable. She was funny and I enjoyed her interactions with the group.

Reiji and Jindai - I've put together because it'd be no fun otherwise xD Despite my disappointment that Jindai =/= daddy, I loved seeing him again. As for Reiji, he's a sweetheart! I love him and how well he gels with, well... everyone!

Shirona - I find a little bit annoying, but she does contribute a lot to Shinji/Satoshi and is involved with Ginga Dan, so I won't complain.

Ginga Dan/J - the best set of villains ever. J is pure evil. She's made of the stuff of nightmares, which is why I love watching her! Ginga Dan are pretty bad as well, but they're sooooo cute x3 I've also enjoyed their plot a huge lot more than I did Aqua/Magma.

Handsome - we haven't seen much of. But from what we did see, he was quite interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing him again.

Shinnou Now! - are hilarious! I love Yuuka and that silly gag about the boom mic xD

Professor Nanakamodo - is a bore. Thank God he doesn't really appear.

ETA: Lol, I forgot Yamato and Kosanji! xD I actually hate that they've been reduced to TRio comic relief status, except that unlike the TRio we know too little of them for them to be "lovable". I also feel it's stupid and pointless sticking them in Shinnou. They belong to a Kanto/Jouto criminal organisation!

I think this thread makes me realize just how many new characters were introduced in DP.

Some people just tend to look at the main cast and say, "Oh, Dawn is the only new character," but that's not true at all.

The writers introduced a lot of recurring characters, and most of them return for a number of appearances in later episodes. I think new characters keep the show fresh, so I hope they introduce as many more as possible.
