What do you think Ash is going to do with all those Badges?

It only takes 8 to control all Pokemon. What do you think he's going to do with those 32 + Orange Island + Battle Frontier Badges?

Are we witnessing the ascension of the next leader of team rocket? Or possibly, something greater and far more sinister?

Well, obviously, Ash wants to become a Pokemon Master. ^_^

And it's my guess that: It takes all badges from every region, all symbols, and at least one trophy (getting 1st place) from a major Pokemon league in order to become a Pokemon Master.

However, beating an Elite Four member or more than one Elite Four member, may also be required to become a Pokemon Master.

Though, I have no idea why the writers haven't explained to us what is required in order to become a Pokemon Master. They haven't gave us the definition of a Pokemon Master either, for that matter....

The power of the badges has never been mentioned on the show, has it? I don't remember. Although it would seem not to exist. Of course, it would be easier to know if they made use of HMs...

And I still hold to the belief that being a Pokemon master isn't a specific goal as much as it is a term for a really good trainer.

A Pokémon Master is a master at Pokémon training. There is no offical requirement. But it involves having all Pokémon and bages and stuff, to prove yu are a master at Pokémon training.

Yeah, the badge abilities don't exist in the anime. Charizard still didn't listen to Ash even with the 8 Kanto badges. As for being a Pokemon master, it means different things to different people. For me, Ash already has the qualities of a master, he just has yet to prove he is one. He has come pretty close by beating the Battle Frontier, but he still has not beaten a major league. True, he beat the Orange League, but evidently all the other tournaments are much harder by comparison. Winning a major tournament would satisfy me that he has reached a high enough level of skill to be deemed a master. There could be countless regions and countless tournaments out there, and even countless elites out there, and they would only be separated by one thing-strategy. There is no being the absolute best, as there is always a way to overcome someone else's strategy. In my mind, being a champion of some league out there would count him as strong as any of the elites.

It's probably like the trophy; he gave them all to his mommy, who lovingly displays them in her house and brags about her son to all who will listen. She probably also keeps them polished for him.

He probably just drops them off at home as soon as he's done with the league. Remember he kept his Johto and Orange League badges in the same place on his jacket, and the Orange badges were nowhere to be found? Plus, he didn't put his Hoenn Badges or Frontier Symbols on his jacket like he did previously (he had a badge case and a Frontier Folio). The badges are probably all in a drawer in his room in Pallet Town.

As for what he's going to do with them, I really can't see him doing anything. I think after their respective leagues, they're considered useless. That way, it prevents a trainer from re-entering the league with already-earned badges.

I'm not really sure about that. It would seem a little bit repetitive after competeing in a league that you lost in to have to go and defeat all the gym leaders again because the badges were only good for that season. But I don't think we'll even have to worry about that subject because I highly doubt the writers will have him try and check into the Indigo/Johto/Hoenn Leauge again.

With the number of competitors each year, it is extremely unlikely that you can only use badges once. (Even more so for the ribbons at the Grand Festival, though it would probably still say something about the supposed strength of Gym Leaders.)

As for Ash's plot, I could see him entering the Indigo League again. It would be a fitting place for him to win a league if he doesn't do it in one of the future game leagues.

And to the original post: Ash controls Pokémon with his heart, not his badges. The obvious example - Charizard - has already been brought up. In the anime, they don't don't seem to be anything more than pieces of metal. They obviously have a special meaning to Ash but that is just symbolic. So I don't think we are witnessing any equivalent to the Star Wars prequal trilogy.

Why would they go back to Kanto a third time? If they were going to have Ash enter the Indigo League again, they would have done it in Battle Frontier.

Besides, the Kanto Grand Festival takes place in the Indigo League now, so I doubt the writers have any plans for Ash to do that. I'm also glad you brought up ribbons in this thread, although it seems for that people need to get 5 ribbons again, I think. Would be somewhat cheap otherwise.

What? Ash is always going back to Kanto. How hard is it for Professor Oak to say, "by the way, the Indigo tournament takes place soon"? Obviously, in Battle Frontier the writers weren't ready for Ash to win a league yet. And I don't see how the Grand Festival taking place there means the league can't still take place there.

The maths for collecting badges and ribbons for the tournament each year simply don't work out.

YES.

Diamondshipping for the win!

But all biases/personal fantasies/homebrewed canon aside, well, I'm sure he's got a nice display case for them in Pallet Town. The anime doesn't put as big an emphasis on badges for control over Pokemon... they're more just shiny acheivement medals. Even after Ash stole... er, won the Earth Badge, Charizard continued being an ass around him. So he's got bragging rights, mostly.

The thought of Ash holding up a piece of plastic and demanding those before him bow down is rather inane.

obviously, the badges making Pokemon obey you was mainly implemented for gameplay purposes. However, seeing as they've had a happiness system for Pokemon ever since Gold/Silver, I gotta wonder why they couldn't change a Pokemon's obedience to suit that instead of the badges. Back in GS, they could've easily changed that, but by this point it's essentially become a tradition, so it's not gonna change in future generations.

Actually, I think they did do that, as back in G/S, I had a traded Pokemon and a caught Pokemon way above the levels that were recommended, and the caught one obeyed me, because I had him longer, and the traded one, who I had for like 5 minutes, refused to listen to anything I said.

This could all just be circumstance though. But I think the badges just make obedience a sure thing.

Stole? He never match Giovanni. I assumue that he will fight Giovanni. Charizard disobey Ash is because he wans't worth his power.

*dies from lol*

No no no. badges only help with traded PKMN.

Yes. Hence, the "stole" part. Since he ended up catching the badge when it TR dropped it, rather than earning it in a PROPER battle with the Gym Leader, he more or less stole it (though there's been a million debates on that topic, and it's an issue for a whole other thread).

Personally, I think he should tile his bedroom walls with them ... by the time he gets finished with his "quest" ... he should have enough for an entire room.
