I suspect this may be popular, or something. I know this kind of discussion only comes up in forums online making fun of Ash Ketchum, but I'm just really interested.

First off, it doesn't matter what IQ you have and IQ doesn't always show how one functions. There's no shame in having an IQ whether it's low or high, it is what it is. I'm just really, really curious what everyone thinks.

So for me, I think Ash Ketchum's IQ is around 70-80. Hear me out. My mom worked with those that I suppose people would call people with 'cognitive disabilities', for a time. A few of them you couldn't even tell they were like that, even if you talked to them. One guy was even perfectly fine in intelligence, then got a disease from a misquito that messed with his brain. You can't tell anything was wrong with him at all.

Here's a thing I read on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/3ygt9k/what_does_an_iq_of_70_entail_cognitively/

"To answer the question, there are students with 70 IQ's that can do just about anything. It's all about adaptive skills. A student with an IQ average of 70 may still be able to perform complex tasks, be in regular education class, perform mathematic tasks, drive cars and operate normally in society. People with IQ's of 70 that do operate out in the world usually have high expressive and receptive language skills as well as having developed complex adaptive behaviors that help to make up for the deficit."

I'd like to see what you come up with. :)

I don't really think Ash is dumb at all, most of the "he's an idiot!" comments pop up when he does something that doesn't obey the theory of the game series, like Aim For the Horn (which worked) or something like that, and compared to a lot of Shonen protagonists he seems fairly normal and well-adjusted. I know some people also like to push he's "autistic" but he has fairly good social skills and the ability to tell how people are feeling outside of perhaps romance, but that's understandable since he's young and doesn't seem to have any interest in it.

I see what you're getting at, but could you or someone else please explain why Ash didn't know what a couple was, or why is it everytime he hears a new word he thinks it's a Pokémon?

Really the only dumb thing that Ash does over and over again... is his constant attempt to body check things. Ash needs to learn that his body slam is nowhere near as good a Pokemon using that move. Granted that's more a sign of insanity than low IQ.
