Ever since the start of the Pokemon Anime, Gary Oak always had a squad of cheerleaders following him and kissing his ass no matter what he said or did.

However, they completely disappeared after they were crying over Gary losing in the Indigo League Tournament. They weren't seen at all during the Johto journey until the Silver Conference match-up between Gary and Ash, which Gary lost.

Ever since then, they have completely disappeared from the series, and we never got an explanation why.

Here is my theory on what happened:

As soon as Gary lost the match, the cheerleaders had looks of complete shock on their faces, as if they couldn't comprehend what had just taken place. I mean, from all that time traveling with Gary and hearing about how he would easily be able to defeat Ash any day, and all of a sudden Gary is defeated by the very person whom he said he could easily defeat must have been very devastating for the cheerleaders. Once they got backstage, I imagine Gary's Cheerleaders must have started bursting into tears nearly flooding the area, crying in only a manner that would make Sailor Moon look well behaved in comparison. I also imagine afterwords that they openly dumped Gary, calling him a "phony", "real loser", "has been", etc and walked out on him.

But then again, your guess is as good as mine. What do you think happened to Gary's Cheerleaders?

Maybe in the time between Gary losing in the Indigo League and appearing again just before heading out to Johto, he realized that traveling around with his own personal cheerleading squad wasn't the best idea. Traveling by car made it easier for him to get from one place to the next, but it also could have prevented him from catching and training more frequently, which could have factored into why he couldn't even make it past the first four rounds of the tournament. He became more serious during that time, trained more and decided that it would be better if he traveled on his own. I can't really think of why they suddenly came back for his match against Ash in the Johto League, aside from how it was his last battle before deciding to become a Pokemon Researcher and the writers wanted to include them for giggles one last time.

Simple, they left. What the hell is there left to cheer for?

"Yeah, Gary, you research that Pokemon's habitat!"
"Go, go, catch them Pokemon! Use that Ultra Ball!"
"Gary, Gary, he's our man! If he can't quit being a badass and give up all his hopes and dreams that he's been bragging about for years to become a researcher, no one can!"
"Who's got that flair? Team Flare! Yeah who's got that flair? Team Flare!"

Lame~

Like really, he doesn't need them anymore.

They were just a reflection of Gary's ego back in Kanto. Post-Kanto Gary was supposed to have grown up a notch, so it made sense for him not to have to be accompanied everywhere by a personal cheer squad.

Since Gary was becoming a researcher, he pretty much did'nt need those girls anymore.

Due to the Recession, they were layed off due to budget and staffing cuts

Maybe just because Gary wanted to Train alone for sometime before Johto and that's why they NEVER Appeared throughout Johto until the League Came, he probably Invited them to Watch him at true League again. Then when he Lost he told them that he wanted to be a Researcher and that he would see them when he could? I Don't Know but it is a Mystery I will Admit and I do Like these kinds of Theories LOL :)

I love this topic. xD I always wondered the same thing.

My guess is that they're gold diggers so they didn't want any part of him when he started losing.
