I've always wondered this. When a Pokemon like Voltorb or Golem uses one of these attacks, what goes on? Their entire body explodes, but they don't die, obviously. I don't get it.

Just wanted some people's opinions.

Well, the special has them physically explode and get destroyed.

I think it's more of a powerful shockwave that is emitted from the pokemon that is harmful to the user. A defense mechanism, so to speak.

It could also be a psychic blast that causes instant combustion in the air around them.

^Like he said, it could be a defense mechanism. It could be caused by a chemical reaction initiated by the Pokemon that turns the surrounding air into a combustible gas with a high explosive velocity, then it is ignited. This could happen in a matter of seconds.

Also, think about it this way: If explosion killed the Pokemon or it exploded into chunks, would it faint? I think not.

some pokemon might actually explode like a bomb, due to an internal chemical combination, and then reform later. Koffing comes to mind.

I say that it just releases a massive burst of energy that knocks itself out rather than blowing up its body.

It could be a massive shock wave. But then again, that doesn't explain the explosions.

^True dat! *shot* No, I agree with everyone else. It's a big blast of energy not particularly focused on one point. AKA, mindless boom.

They get KO-ed...

I always thought that they just form an exlosive aura around their bodies but the shockwave knocks them out cold as well... not that they literally explode from within.

I am not sure exactly i have always imagined it as Electrode opened up and the blast came out of it, and koffing surrounds itself in explosive gas and ignights it etc

They do what any good person does after they explode, they count to 10 and pull themselves back together!

You really have to ask yourself is, what happens after a Pokemon uses the move Memento? Does the Pokemon suddenly lose its memory? Start getting tatoos on its body? Begin retracing its steps to the opponent it was facing?

I thought that in Koffing's case, it blows up because of the different types of gases it stores in its body, which would mean that any explosion would begin internally.
