Yellow: Gary
Blue: Takeshi (I named my game character Tani. Yeah I love Takeshi's Castle/MXC that much)
Sapphire/Emerald: Brandon
Pearl: Martin (after some hot guy I know from school)
Diamond: Masando (Masanobu Ando combined)
Silver: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (That was by accident though)

Pretty much, I just name the characters after their Japanese anime names.
 
Gosh. My sister named them after people she didn't like.

In Yellow I named him after this jerk in my 5th grade class that thought he was better than me in pokemon...his name was Sean...and again for Gold...I still hate that guy...

I don't remember Sapphire's...let's call him Stinky.

Pearl is Clint for lack of a better name, I stole one of the pre-set ones...

Mine suck compared to everyone elses.....!

Yellow: Gary, Blue, Gree-*Shot*
FR/LG: Tauro, Gary (=P), Ralph, Ash. I'm serious on that last one, BTW.
Crystal: May*, Silver.
Gold: ...Dun remember. I borrowed this, so probably Taylor because my friend usually names her rivals that, after her sister.
Diamond: Percy.
Pearl: Ralph.

*I was five, Silver looked like a girl too me. >.>
 
I usually name my rival Xavier. Not for any particular reason, I just named him that one time and it stuck.

Or I name my rival after one of my friends: Nathan, Justin, or Leo. They are also Pokemon fans.
 
Sonib! My friend wanted to name him Sonic, but she spelt it wrong. She fixed it, but now I always make it Sonib anyway.

And lets not forget "Butts"

Lucas, I think, but I can't even remember the part about naming your rival. Must have been too sleepy.

Anyone name their rival as a palindrome or anagram of their character's name?

Gold: Gary (also named the player Ash)
Emerald: May
FireRed: Green

Blue: SATOSHI. Because in Blue, my character is named SHIGERU.
Crystal: PAUL. Named after Paul from the anime. I named myself MARINA.
Sapphire: Brendan.
Fire Red: SHIGERU. And I'm SATOKO. XD
Pearl: Rollo. He's named after a Redwall character. And I'm Tansy, also a character from Redwall. I was doing a Redwall-themed thing.

Memorable past names:
Blue: Stupid.
Silver: Lionel. I named him that for no apparent reason. I also named him Gold once or twice.
Crystal: Until my current file, he was always SILVER.
Fire Red: Gabriel (no reason), Andy (guy I hated at the time), Crap.
Pearl: Wally. He just sort of looks like a Wally, IMO.

Memorable past names (my brother's games):
Red: Fat(Female Symbol), Crap.

Pearl: A Loser
I named him that because I wanted it to say on the mailbox "a loser's house" I thought it would say "a loser wants to battle" but it says "PKMN trainer a loser wants to battle." Damn it.

The kanto rival is always Gary
The Johto Rival I named Archie, named after the team aqua villian
The hoenn rival wasn't nameable

~May (default, though I would've called her it anyway.)

~Simon (it seemed to fit)
~Tyson (default, I had no idea what to call him that time)
~A Freak (that time I got pissed off at the grammar fix-ups. In Gen I and II it would say "A FREAK wants to battle!" "You defeated A FREAK!" Now all we have is "You are challenged by Pkmn Trainer A Freak!" "Where's my little son, a Freak?" (says: A Freak's Mom) and "A Freak's House")
~Pearl (after finding out that that's technically his actual name. I always thought he'd have an actual name [like Jun] and I just didn't know it, because of Lucas and Dawn but it turns out he's just called Pearl apparently. I like it, the version names are nostalgic. lol}
