What if Dawn would be the main character of Best Wishes?

Since DP started, Dawn (and later on Piplup) was treated just like Ash: as the main hero(ine), not unlike Misty and May

Some people thought (including myself) that Dawn was going to be the main character of Best Wishes instead of Ash.

What if Dawn was the main character? How would that affect the franchise? Would Cilan & Iris still be her friends? What about rivals, gym battles and contests? etc...

No, no, no!
I'd never love Best Wishes! as much as I do now if Dawn were to be in it.
I'm sick and tired of her and her Piplup, and those annoying contests.... Uggh...
I don't think she's a interesting character, and I think she's a too girly and has a bland personality. Sure, she went through a lot of development, but development isn't that interesting if the character herself isn't, and I don't think she was....
Ash, Iris and Dento are the perfect trio, and it'd ruined if Dawn were to replace Ash.
(MY OPINION! I have to point it out.... And I'm really sorry to those who like Dawn, but this is how I feel about her, and nothing can change my opinion.)

Her character was originally created to appeal to girls and fanboys, so in that case Best Wishes would be a lot more "girly".

We'd have to deal with either Contests again, or have the concept of Pokémon Musicals broadened to the anime. She would have her Pochama of course and Mijumaru would be trained by Dento or Iris, plus Miju would probably evolve quite fast. The otter would probably have a different personality, too. I could see Dento being a mentor to Hikari in Contests/Musicals, but I'm not sure how she and iris would interact. I guess they would argue as much as Iris and Satoshi did at the beginning of BW.

I'm a great fan of Dawn, I loved her throughout Sinnoh region but quite honestly I think we're done with her story. Anything redundant would just ruin her development, it would feel like Ash at the start of Best Wishes and I really wouldn't like that. I'm glad they ended her story on a good note. ^^

EDIT: But IF she were in Best Wishes

- I could definitely see Dento as her rival in the Musicals which would be the expanded version of Contests like Meron suggested.

- Iris would most likely take on the role Brock used to have through previous sagas, such as being the doctor in the group and the food provider. Also, I could see Ash traveling with both Iris and Dawn with the girls constantly fighting due her differences. Ya know, one is girly and the other is not.

Eh, I can't see much sadly. I can say though that there would be only one sidekick like before with all the real development focused on Ash and Dawn.

What?... what are you talking about? The whole point of Dawn was to be an equal heroine to Ash... not to replace him.... the whole point is that they were the equals stars of DP, so we had a main hero with plot aimed at boys and a girl heroine with plot aimed at girls
She can't replace him, but she could stay and continue into BW, possibly wearing Hilda's clothes similary to what Ash did in DP and BW with the respective game hero's clothes... and I doubt anything would be drastically different other than Contests still being around... which could be much better than what we have now (back to one star, no second plot, all non Ash cast members are just sidekicks again....)

I know I wouldn't be watching ^^; even if Dento joined.

I don't know exactly how it would effect the franchise. It's an interesting question. I think it'd depend if you liked her character or not , but honestly with no contests I don't see what she'd really do. Enter Gym Battles and have Di--er I mean Dento and Iris be her bodyguards? xD

EDIT: If Dawn entered Musicals I bet Bianca would be her rival :D

I think she'd function the same way Ash does now. Iris and Cilan would react the same to her too.

Besides wehen in the world did people think Dawn was going to be the main hero of Best Wishes? I had a poll going right before DP ended and 90% of the people here said they knew she was going to leave.

We didn't know about Iris yet, but virtually everyone knew Dawn was going.

The question is what if Dawn became the main character of BW.

appletree still said this in his opening post "Some people thought (including myself) that Dawn was going to be the main character of Best Wishes instead of Ash."

I'd like to know where this idea came from, because I can't recall a single person on this forum thinking Dawn was actually going to replace Ash. And as said, 90% of people also agreed she was going to leave and not be the next heroine either.

To answer the thread, I'll say if Dawn was the main character, she'd be reset like Ash was, and we'd have to see more of her struggles against the boring Zoey/Kenny, so no thanks.

But that was your poll, not that from another Pokémon Community. They have diffrent opinions then you & the other people on Bulbagarden. Sorry for being so rude, but Bulbagarden isn't the only one with opinions.

Anyway, my opinion: Best Wishes would have been a lot more girly, like Meron said. And why do I have a feeling that Dawn would invent Pokémon Musicals.

Dawn would be a Poké Stylist too, getting help from Iris and Cilan.

Rivals? I think Bianca would be pretty decent.

Dawn definitely would not get Oshawott either. Imagine Piplup and Oshawott together? The horror!

Most of the pokemon fandom shares similar views on other websites. There was a waning interest in contests all throughout DP so I have no idea how anyone could think they would continue them for yet another generation. The only reasons Contests even continued in DP in the first place is because they were originally running off the success of the AG contests, and the writers probably thought they would remain just as popular for a second gen. Since most of the DP coordinators received lukewarm reception from fans other than Dawn and Ursula, its no surprise they were axed. Dawn didn't have as big a fan following outside of Japan it seems. Piplup itself was certainly less popular outside of Japan.

Dawn would be a Poké Stylist too, getting help from Iris and Cilan.

Rivals? I think Bianca would be pretty decent.

So in other words, just have Dawn in Ash's place with the same things happening to her, but have her do contests? I know Dawn was created to be a female take on Ash's character, but there's only so far with that you can go.

I also can see Iris picking on Dawn like she did with Ash.

I definitely wouldn't watch.

Her character is one of my least favorites (keep in mind I'm going off the dub, so if she's completely different in the original please ignore what Im saying :D), mainly due to the excessive outfits, the personality, catchphrase, and her freaking Piplup. I stopped liking it around DP07. I would not be able to handle a third generation of contests. Especially with Dawn. Advanced Gen contests were great, but Diamond and Peal ones were meh.

Also, who thought she was going to return? By now wouldn't people get that it was each girl had one series? I mean, yeah, Misty was in 2 regions, but Kanto and Johto were both considered one series. (I'm not saying your opinions would be invalid or negative, Im just a little confused on where it came from)

Well I think the original thought was there was going to be a filler arc for the Johto Battle Frontier, so Dawn would have stayed for that if it happened....but of course the writers stretched out Sinnoh so long they had no time for one.

I would never watch this series if Dawn was the main character. Her character got on my nerves a lot, and her Piplup just made things worse. A few people have already said what I was going to say, so I won't repeat anything.

I would have no interest if Ash wasn't in the anime, but it wouldn't bother me at all if she decided to travel with Ash again. They could still get acquainted with Iris and Cilan no problem. And wouldn't May be considered a co star in AG? I didn't consider her a "side character" at all her presence was known and was loud in my opinion .Considering the arguments Ash and May had about whether they should go to the gym city or the contest city.

May was the first try at an equal star, but it didn't go as good as should have been and Ash was still clearly more important... with Dawn they learned from their mistakes and fixed them and we got the first truely equal star (officially, the text that appears in the beginning of every opening theme in Japan, for the original series + AG + BW says this is "Ash's story", yet for DP it says "Ash and Dawn's story")
I'd say you can break the main characters into three groups: main protagonists (Ash, Dawn and to a lesser extent May too), secondary protagonists (Misty, Brock, Tracey, Max, Iris and Cilan), and the antagonists (Jessie and James)
May kind of felt more than the secondary protagonists but not as "main" as the main protagonists (Ash and Dawn) but if I had to choose what May was, then she definitely belongs more in the main protagonists group than the secondary protagonists...

Anyway, as I said, this thread is kind of ridiculous because Dawn already WAS the show's main star... for the DP series Ash and Dawn were equal stars, if Dawn continued to BW it'd be the same as it was in DP... she wouldn't replace Ash because she's the girl main protagonist, not the boy main protagonist... and Pokémon wouldn't all of a sudden change to an aimed-at-girls cartoon... it was mostly aimed at boys but since RS/AG days started to try to appeal equally to girls too, but not in place of appealing to boys, just in addition to it... something that kind of stopped for the anime with BW but is still true in the games and the cards (musical, game commercials with girls with pink DS, card sets for boys and for girls, etc...)

If Dawn were the main character of Best Wishes, I think I would go insane. I've never liked the DP saga.

Now, we could always give the two girls a little crush on Cilan... That would make it a little more interesting. (Until it crashes and burns a third of the way into the season.)

It wouldn't be anywhere near as exciting. There's not enough diversity in Contest Battles like there is in Gym challenges.
I highly doubt they'd replace Ash with a female. I think the show is to heavily centered around the creator, whom Ash was actually named after in the Japanese series. I believe it's very much a man's world in Japan. I don't think they'd be inclined to let a female heroin be the focus of the show.
I never actually believed that Dawn was Ash's equal. I can see were people get that idea from, but my take on it is that she was presented as the focus of the female viewers, not of the anime.

If she was the star, of course they could have made Iris and Dent her traveling partners if they'd wished too.

Come to think of it, that DP special Dawn got after she left would be a good example of what she'd be like the main character. Basically the same as she always was, just with no Ash/Brock. She's interact with COTD's same way Ash would, train her pokemon the same way as in DP, etc.
