If Pikachu was not Ash's Pokemon partner from the beginning of the series, who will you like him to travel with? Will he be travelling other chosen pokemon or a starter pokemon? If he will be with a starter pokemon, who will be his starter in every region?

I'd like him to travel with something whose wins are not 99.9% cheap.
BTW, "Plant-type...?"

I'd honestly prefer to vote for an eevee, mimicking Red's eevee previous multi-changing ability, but, since this sounds as DEM as the most part of pikachu's fights, I think I'll stick with pikachu, after all. ^^"

If these fire/water/plant type starters would change with every region, what makes them different from their current status? Pikachu is different because of his constant place at Satoshi's all teams, regardless of generation and region.

I'd stick with Pikachu, because it would be weird seeing him abandon his aipoké at the beginning of every series. If I had to choose, though, I could see him with the fire starter.

You know the difference within 7 days a week? It's the ATTITUDE. A region is like 7 days, the ATTITUDE would be the pokemon.

A Ditto but a special one which can learn any move of the Pokemon it is transforming into. And it would help Brock to learn more about breeding ;D

I like to see him be partners with a starter in each gen. Which means none of him having all 3 starters since the other 2 would be shafted in terms of spot light. So that's not really a good idea unless it's like AG/DP and have the starters spread out in the Twerp Trio.

Either that, or stick him with a Pokemon that can't evolve.

I wish Piplup was around back in Kanto so he could have picked him as his first pokemon. :p

This is a good question. But we would have to think of how many likeable and suitable Pokemon they were back then. Let's see:

Charmander. Sure
Squirtle. Sure
Bulbasaur was too ugly. Sorry folks.
Oddish. Maybe
Clefairy. Hmmm?
Jigglypuff. Probably.
Caterpie. Why not?
Rattata? Okay, let me not go there.
Dratini. Haha! Only in our dreams.
Sandshrew. Maybe.
Nidoran. Maybe.
Vulpix? Too cute maybe?
Paras
Diglet
Mankey. Makes some sort of sense.
Abra? Only in our dreams.
Growlithe. That would be cool.
Poliwag. Uh, maybe.
Eevee! Yes.
Gastly, Bellsprout. Uh, I don't think so.
Mew. Hahahahah. If only dreams were real.

If Ash didn't have Piakchu, then Ash wouldn't get all the starters.

Re: What if Pikachu wasn't Ash partner from the start of the series? Who would you li

Any starter that's currently OU, like Mudkip, to please snobby competitive overlords. :(

This would've never happen if they at least made Pikachu better amd have Ryu status.

Re: What if Pikachu wasn't Ash partner from the start of the series? Who would you li

I'm sure most already know the story that if Pikachu was not chosen, then Clefairy would have. I will try to answer this question honestly, though. I don't think they could've chosen from the three starters since to be fair, they have to showcase all three, so Ash would still have to eventually get all three of them. That would make the matter of choosing one of them seem pointless. Have all of the companions get one of the starters? Since this is the original series we're talking about, and they did not have that idea yet, I will dismiss that as well. I don't have the memory to know what the next most popular pokemon next to Pika and the starters (any form) were. I want to say Eevee, but I'm not sure. I'm sorry, but I don't have any particular ones that I would've favored and would've still been fair. (I liked Charizard, sue me) Now, I pretty much equally like a lot of the first gens, so it would've been impossible for me to choose. Would I still favor Pikachu? That is hard to say. If I experienced the game before the anime, I don't know what would've happened, but regardless of what pokemon it was, if it could evolve, I would've allowed it to evolve.

I think it would have been interesting to see Satoshi go with his first choice, Zenigame.

The type of "Breeding" Takeshi is interested in is not the same thing that the English version of the games calls "breeding." His goal has nothing to do with making pokemon eggs.

What is the source of that, anyway? I see that story repeated a lot but have never seen anyone say where they heard it. Was there an interview conducted at some point that revealed this information?

According to Bulbapedia it was mentioned in Pikachu's Global Adventure: The Rise and Fall of Pokemon by Joseph Tobin, though whether that can be considered a reliable source or not I couldn't say.

Irrespective of that, the way in which Bulbapedia phrases it seems to suggest that Clefairy wasn't actually considered for the role of Ash's partner specifically, rather as the mascot for the franchise as a whole. It was the popularity of the anime which led to Pikachu taking complete centre-stage, not the other way around (again, according to Bulbapedia).

To answer the original question, I guess Rattata would have worked for me. Admittedly, I couldn't picture it being much of a powerhouse, but it's got the endearment factor down pat.^^

Re: What if Pikachu wasn't Ash partner from the start of the series? Who would you li

Wow there's a lot of history here, Ash should b travelling with a normal-type pokemon (it should be cute and cuddly), pick some below:

1. Clefairy = as mostly debated.
2. Meowth = why not a domesticated cat?
3. Happiny = cute baby pink pokemon.
4. Ditto = as many who have wanted to...
5. Eevee = lots of evolutions per region!
6. Teddirsa = cute forest bear.
7. Buneary = cute rabbit.
8. Lillipup =domesticated dog, a good buddy...
9. Patrat = furry pokemon for pokemon watch, why not?
10. Togepi = a trainer should start with an egg...lol

Re: What if Pikachu wasn't Ash partner from the start of the series? Who would you li

I couldn't see any other pokemon than Pikachu. Some people say that Clefairy was gonna be the original mascot but I couldn't really see Ash with a Clefairy.

Clefairy can't be a travelling with Ash, it's too girly. 572.gif

Re: What if Pikachu wasn't Ash partner from the start of the series? Who would you li

Well, I'll say one more thing. If I were doing it, I would use a pokemon that is very versatile, so that it would appeal to everyone. The Normal types are some of the more versatile pokemon. I wouldn't favor Clefairy for that, but I don't know their reasoning on that. They were going for something visually appealing, I guess.
