What exactly is Iris to Drayden? Is she his daughter, granddaughter or niece or just some kid from the streets that he took in. They apparently live together, Drayden is her mentor and they have been seen counting money together. So what are your opinions?

Considering their relationship in the anime, I'd bet they're rivals in-game.

An old man and a young girl, looking totally different.....

I think these things the wrong way, don't I?

I always thought Iris was his apprentice or something... I haven't watched the B&W season of the anime really, so I wouldn't know what their relationship is like in it. But it does seem very plausible that they are rivals. In the Black universe, Drayden is stronger than Iris. But in the White universe, it's the complete opposite.

I think that Drayden is stronger in both versions, actually. In both games, he seems to serve as a mentor towards Iris, and seems more knowledgeable in both versions, as well. I always assumed that he was just letting Iris take the reigns for the gym battle.

Perhaps that's just me, though.

Actuallly I think it was said in White os that he retired which is why you fight Iris and in Black he'still tghe GL

"I saw Drayden and Iris counting up a big handful of coins! Isn't that setting a bad example for kids, flaunting your wealth like that?' Hmmm... That's living the high life! But you know, the Opelucid Gym Badge is shiny like a coin... Maybe you saw wrong? 'The National Gymquirer'! We eagerly await your letters!"

I'm guessing that Iris is Drayden's apprentice - although it might have made more sense if Drayden was the Gym Leader in White and Iris in Black (considering how Black's Opelucid looks more futuristic).

@Joshawott: They probably wanted to avoid any possible stink of an ambiguously brown girl being the leader of Black, with the big white guy the leader of White. D8;

As for their relationship, I always thought that Iris was related to him by blood somehow, like she's Drayden's granddaughter, and Iris's mother died or something, so now he takes care of her.

Yeah, I'm going with Iris being his apprentice. Unless it's the other way around.

I'd say former apprentice rather, given she trains and deals with things on her own.

Like, he gave her some Ridiculous Training from Hell Badass-Grandpa Style to get the basics, and now it's up to her to become stronger than her old master.

Even if she was his apprentice that doesn't explain her biological relationship with him (or lack thereof).

I think she must be his granddaughter, that's the only explanation I can think of; randomly taking her in off the streets seems a bit random to me.

probably what @Fairy Red said to keep with the name trend. (P.S. I would buy white because of Zekrom being awesome)

Pretty sure it was explained in the games Iris is Drayden's apprentice who, presumably he met through his travels around the world. She was a random girl who had an affinity for dragons and I guess whoever her family was before thought Drayden could give her a better life.

Or perhaps she was an orphan living amongst dragons and Drayden gave her a home.

Or Iris was sold as his wife.

I’m not entirely sure. In Pokémon Masters, Iris refers to him as “Grampa Drayden”, but that could just be a respect thing if he took her in.

Also in PM, she mentions that Leon (and Hop by default) are her cousins. In Sword, their grandfather is dark skinned, but their grandmother seems to be lighter skinned, so it’s possible that maybe the grandmother is Drayden’s sister and it’s a second cousin thing? If they are related. It’s possible. Look at Cameron Boyce. He is fair skinned, but his grandmother was part of the Clinton Twelve.

Personally, I take it as a he-took-her-in kinda thing and Grandpa is a respect, not by blood title, but either way, Iris definitely knows where she comes from if she knows that Hop and Leon are her cousins.

The Leon is her cousin thing is fake. It was a screenshot from the game that was edited to look that way (Very convincingly).

Also, pretty sure Iris is his apprentice. The fact she calls him Grandpa is a bit weird tho considering that's more so a Japanese thing to do to refer to older people like grandpa, considering Unova is America.

TLDR: Grandpa is just some sort of affectional name for him. Iris just sees him as her grandpa even if they're not rrlated by blood, is my guess.

Same old trope of old guy looking for a successor, it goes to the Village of Dragons, Iris is the best battler in there and so the old guy takes her under his wing. End of story.
