Hmph. I love Ash but I hate Pikachu. 
As far as really character, though, my favorite character is Misty. She displays by far the most character development of any hero character (this excludes JJ&M), and really I just think of her as a very interesting character overall.

May, she's not only one of the best characters in AG but one of the best in the entire Pokemon anime in general. The writers really struck gold with her and her story arc, not to mention her character development has been second only to Ash.
My other choice was Ash. Ash was OK in Kanto, Meh in Johto, but damn cool in Hoenn. AG Ash > all. (Except May of course)
Just curious, but why do you have Pikachu and Ash in the same choice? I mean, if you like Ash that doesn't automatically mean Pikachu is your favorite character too.

But, other than her, I'd vote for May. I have only seen her in 3 episodes, mind you, but she is the best character(other than Sabbie) that I have seen.

From that list, I have to say James because he's sexually lost... oh wait, that doesn't sound right. Oh, plus he had Victreebel and Chimecho, for they were some of the most awesome Pokémon in the show, big time.

I chose Misty, James and Max even though he sounds annoying on my new tv speakers.
Honestly, the main characters aren't all that great except for James and Misty sporting loveable personalities and awesome families and awesome character development. We see character dev in Jessie but her personality is like the extreme version of Misty's angry side.
I really like Clair, Liza and Mary the best (Mary from the PMC) and Cassidy. Domino and Luana are pretty hot and so are Violet, Asagi, Hisame and so many other girls. Even movie stars like Bianca I consider beautiful.
All three girls aren't too popular thus making them more interesting and hot. Besides no matter what, Clair will always be too hot for words.
In the boys I like Harley, Hiisu, Morty, Tommy and Richie. Harley because he's so sexay, Hiisu because the hair pwns, Tommy because he's like officially a hunk and Richie because he's the better version of Ash (and not even annoying really except for in the Lugia special but then he was up against my favorite rocket Cassidy.
I think I like too many people, because my hate list remains ever so teeny

Gary. He wasn't in it much, but I liked him when he appeared later on. Like when he saved the lab, and in those episodes with the Silver Conference, or whatever it was he battled ash 6 on 6 in. He was a cool character.

I'm the odd ball who has a shrine to Bill, both online and in my closet. Okay, so I was kidding about the latter, but I'm working on it.
Seriously, though, he really does have an interesting personality (intelligent, eccentric, polite in the anime's version at least, not without his faults... so to speak... *clears throat*), and that made him possibly one of the most intriguing characters I've ever really analyzed/written about. The anime version's British accent only sweetens the deal.
