I dont really know between its genres, Shojo (Anime like Dragon Balll and so), Kodomo (for lttle kids, Like Hello kitty), Ecchi (Those wear shorter and shorter clothers, Look at female any gym leader, or at May, or at Dawn, and then write here if Im wrong) Bishojo (features beautiful girls) Sentai (fighting teams, and pokemon are fighting teams), or Moe (features cute characters, with naive behaviors, and arent very indepentdient). Hmmm. And yet, Im still wondering how random-10-year olds can travel alone, can enter Mines and get spheres, and how thr Dad character never appears (except in RSE).

Its probably considered Childrens in Japan.. but it's more of an Comedy Action (because there is more comedy than action)...

um, don't be confused by the genres... Dragonball is not Shojo, by far... and neither is pokemon (I think you mean Shonen, Shoujo means for girls)... It's also no where near close to Ecchi. I mean... wow. It's cool that you know the words and learning them, but I think your definitions are a little off :p

Children, shounen, comedy, boy's adventure.

It would have to be more perverted to be etchi, like Chobits, which is also seinen (NOT shoujo).

Though AG and DP do use some staples of the shoujo genre in the Pokemon Contests arcs, it's still far from being a true shoujo anime.

The style is also very shounen.

To clear things up...

Shojo/Shoujo - Means "young lady"; Often romantic or melodramatic shows with a female protaganist; the Magical Girl/Mahou Shojo genre fits here, which includes Cardcaptor Sakura for example

Shonen - Mean "young boy"; Usually action/adventure shows with a male protaganist like Naruto or Pokemon

Seinen - "Young men"; Titles that are meant for older men such as Cowboy Bebop or shows with ecchi themes like Chobits

Josei - "Young women"; Shows intended for older women like NANA and possibly certain BL titles fit in the category

Kodomo - "Child"; Shows meant for young children such as the Hello Kitty franchise; Pokemon can fit into this category also

Sentai - "Fighting team"; Shows with superhero teams like Power Rangers/Super Sentai; Sailor Moon can fit in this genre

Ecchi - "Indecent sexuality"; Pretty much a show with lots of fanservice and sexual humor but doesn't go over the top; Again Chobits fits this category

Hentai = The term, in fact means "abnormal" or "perverted"; In Japan however, the word is not used often and they use a different term to describe pornographic anime.

...Therefore Pokemon fits the Kodomo and Shonen category, an action/adventure show meant for a young audience.

rather than what kind of age genre it fits under, I'm curious to know if you could count Pokemon as a sci-fi, or a fantasy, or maybe something else. I mean, the franchise uses a lot of rubber science, to be sure, but then there're also a lot of fantasy-like elements used as well (time/space-rulers, Satoshi getting possessed by the Pokelantis king, and even with all the Pokedex entries, there's still no scientific explanation attempted to be given as to how several of these creatures can have control over the elements).

Hentai = The term, in fact means "abnormal" or "perverted"; In Japan however, the word is not used often and they use a different term to describe pornographic anime.

in Japan, they refer to most of their porno as エロ "ero", short for "erotic".

Yeah, I would definitely say Pokemon qualifies to be in the fantasy genre. ^^

It certainly has a "magical" feeling to it, with Pokemon conrolling different elements. You have everything that Yamato-san mentioned. Also, there are things like the magical orbs from the movies (the 3 spheres from the second movie, and the Soul Dew from the 5th movie), and the Red and Blue Orbs that controlled Kyogre and Groudon.

And then of course, there's the whole thing with Pokemon Magic (Lily the magician, and Ash being turned into a Pikachu), which sadly, neither of them received much focus in the anime aside from one episode. I don't know why. Maybe the writers thought that the MD specials would fill that gap, perhaps? But anyway, I'm personally hoping they'll bring this subject back, along with another appearence from Ashachu (please writers?).

Although, it seems like the writers have forgotten all about this, I still hope it comes up again in the future.

But the episodes and the movies are different. So what type of anime are the movies (especially "Pocket Monsters Myuutsuu no Gyakushuu", I would like to know that)? The episodes contain more humor and comedy, while the movies are more serious.

Well, in my opinion, the movies seem to include more fantasy and more "magical" things seem to happen. I don't know what genre the First Movie would fall into. But the second, third, 5th, and 8th movies (and Mewtwo Returns) seem to be in the Fantasy genre.

Like I said, the anime series itself has some magic in it sometimes. But recently, it seems like the writers haven't been including much of that anymore (which is sad for me, because I love magic!!).

I found a page that lists virtually all (both English and Japanese worded) Anime genres.

Action:

Fast, thrilling, action-packed shows featuring fighting, blood, death and chase scenes. The fighting aspect of this genre can range from swordfights, fistfights, shootouts to tank battles, outer-space robot wars and more.

Adventure:

Following someone’s journey or travels. This genre is usually associated with action, as part of the journey is fighting to save another, fighting to save him/herself, fighting to find a certain object, fighting to complete a mission etc.

Fantasy:

A genre that uses imaginary, mythological or supernatural forms. There doesn’t necessarily have to be monsters or ghosts in a show for it to be classified as fantasy. Humans with supernatural powers, or people that live in an imaginary world can be elements of fantasy. Even if the main characters are not humans, they will usually still look like humans.

Mecha:

Usually deals with large robots used more like extensions of the pilot rather than weapons like tanks. It is usually associated with science fiction, but can also be related to fantasy, where the large robots are not actually robots and mythical beings, summoned by certain gifted people, for example.

Science Fiction:

Deals with advanced technology set in the future. Sci-fi is usually about technology turning against mankind, or some sort of alien technology that is threatening to end the world.

Drama:

In-depth character development and relationships. It is usually very emotional and some aspects are similar to love/romance, though drama is more sad and the relationships don’t always work out.

Love/Romance:

All about love relationships and the ups and downs the couple (or couple-to-be) have. Shows of this genre usually have a happy ending.

Comedy:

The show must be funny. The comedic scenes are usually visual exaggeration: heavy use of exaggeration in facial features, body proportions and emotions. Can be associated with almost any other genre, though not drama.

School Life:

Revolves around one’s educational life, the relationships that develop, the school-oriented events that occur etc, and can be associated with almost any other genre.

Sport:

Focuses on sport; the main character playing a particular sport and rising in status.

Historical Setting:

Set in the past and is usually associated with action or martial arts. Historical setting would seem to be the opposite of fantasy (history being fact and fantasy being imagination), but not all historical animes are entirely accurate, and can also have mythical beats roaming around as well.

Music:

Similar to sport, focuses on music and the people playing it.

Cooking:

Like sport and music, revolves around cooking.

Harem:

Three or more girls vying for the attention of a single, indecisive male. Anime of this genre often end with the guy not choosing any of the girls. This can also be the reverse.

Martial Arts:

This genre focuses on, well… martial arts! It is usually about hand-to-hand combat, lots of kicking, special moves and swordfighting.

Mystery:

Detective stories, which focus on the unravelling of secrets and the uncovering of truth.

Horror:

Features scary, deformed characters and monsters (usually of a supernatural origin), as well as lots of blood, murder and gory scenes. Horror anime are made as realistic as possible, which means no cute girls with large eyes and abnormal hair styles (usually).

Ecchi:

More of a visual style than plot, as it includes a lot of sexual humour and fan service (for males), such as bare breasts, panty shots and girls in erotic positions. Note: there is no actual porn.

Shounen-Ai:

Directly translated as ‘boy love’, deals with relationships between males. Shounen-ai is of a romance type, not gay porn (which means it’s different from Yaoi).

Yaoi:

Pornographic anime featuring men with men, otherwise known as gay porn, which focuses on the sex and has no real plot.

Shoujo-Ai:

Literally means ‘girl love’, deals with relationships between females, the opposite of Shounen-Ai but more common.

Yuri:

Although many sources will say that Shoujo-ai and Yuri are the same thing, they are not. Yuri is pornographic anime featuring women with women, and like Yaoi, has little necessity for story and focuses more on the visual details.

Mature:

Aimed at the adult audience, includes a lot of nudity and sex scenes.

Shoujo:

Anime aimed at young girls, which have more focus on plot and character development with idealised love stories. The age range for the targeted audience is quite broad, from very young to young teens.

Mahou Shoujo:

Japanese for ‘magical girl,’ it’s subgenre of Shoujo, but popular enough for special mention. Literally means ‘magical girl’, where the heroines get magical powers to fight against evil. Flashy costumes, wands and spells are a common element in Mahou Shoujo (and a bit more action).

Shounen:

Japanese for ‘boy’, it’s aimed at young boys, usually ‘fighting’ anime like action and mecha/transformer type shows. The age range for the targeted audience is quite broad, from very young children to young teens.

Mahou Shounen:

Japanese for ‘magical boy,’ it’s the opposite to Mahou Shoujo and less common, where the main male characters get magical powers.

Seinen:

Japanese for ‘man’, it is aimed at teenage boys and young men. It is generally more complicated and sophisticated than Shounen anime, with more psychological and sexual elements, and puts more focus on plot rather than action (if the show is also under the Action genre, which it usually is). In its character development and relationship side, it is similar to Shoujo, but is usually darker (more like the Drama genre).

Josei:

Japanese for ‘woman’, it is probably the rarest form of anime, aimed at young women. A lot of Josei shows also fall under the category if Yaoi (gay porn), but Josei anime can also be about families and mothers.

Kodomo:

Japanese for ‘child’, it is Anime aimed at young children (younger than the audience you’d expect to get from Shounen and Shoujo anime).

Sentai:

Japanese for ‘fighting team,’ it deals with superheroes and superhero teams, closely associated with the Shounen and Kodomo genres.

Bishoujo:

Japanese for ‘beautiful girl’, it is a very broad genre and can be used to describe any anime featuring pretty female characters and heroines.

Bishounen:

Japanese for ‘beautiful boy’, it is the opposite of Bishoujo, where the main male characters are drawn to be ‘pretty’ and ‘elegant’, which is a style that some Shoujo animes use.

Hentai:

Pornographic anime or erotica. Hentai itself is translated to ‘perverted’. Anything classified as Hentai would also be Mature.

IMO, Pokemon is primarily a Fantasy Adventure Shonen Anime. It includes creatures with supernatural forms (Fantasy), it's about traveling (Adventure), and it is primarily aimed at young boys (Shonen) based on who the protagonist is.

Aditionally, Pokemon could also be a Kodomo type Anime, but that might be aiming too young. Plus, it could also be a Sports Anime, since it involves competition to increase status.

I'm sure there are other genres that overlap, but I think everything else is relatively minor.

Yeah Pokemon is definitely harem if you count all the girls Ash encountered and if any of them ever return at least once. >__>;;

On another forum we are still incomplete with his secret harem love list.

...

Gary's unfortunately number two.

This is what's good with Pokémon; it can fit into almost any genre!
