I'm sure most of us here have seen the below comic already, but it made me think, what is the most common type of player nowadays? If I look at the forums and Let's Play videos on youtube, my guess would be EV Trainers.
I myself am a fun player. I don't care about stats, EVs, IVs, Natures, etc., Etc. I just use Pokemon I like the look of and I think I can use. I did give the EV Trainer approach a try though, to see what all the fuss is about, but honestly, I found it boring.
So tell us what kind of player you are and if there's any reason you prefer that way of playing.

All of them barring "hacker" and "shiny collector", and I'm not sarcastic about this
 
I'm mostly the fun player, but I'm not going to lie, I'm a hacker/somewhat shiny collector. ^^ (I don't show off my shinies, but still. :D) But to me, it makes Pokemon more fun. ^^
 
sss, who the actual fuck is calling shinyfisk "less than ideal". The same person apparently thinks being any of the others can't be "fun", what a n00b

annoyances with the artist aside, I guess I'm all of them bar "6 Arceuses", "gym leader", "clueless one", and the "shiny" one. I prefer using Pokemon I like (and a lot of them aren't very good), though in-game teams aside I much prefer getting them with perfect IVs, egg moves, and EVs. I try to give all of them names I think are creative. I have a lot of shinies but aside from my shiny Sharpedo and shiny Vivillon I do not use any of them in battle.
 
All bar Hacker and Clueless. Competitive actualy made the game much more fun to me, so many awesome and diferent ways of using each pokemon instead of just playing for "fun" with the same boring strategies.

I think most people, especially on this site, will have at least some shades of "all of the above".

- In a playthrough, I generally try to make the most of what I find in the region, but not in the clueless way.
- I like giving the mons nicknames if I think I can come up with an appropriate one.
- I've experimented using mono-type teams (completely destroyed my brother's team when he tried spamming Ground vs. my Electric team)
- And apparently (according to my roommate anyway) I have ludicrous luck when it comes to breeding, and I enjoy my share of competitive play.

I would say that I'm 80% doing it for fun and 20% clueless. Most of the time I have a general idea about who I want on my team, but some other times I just like to play with whoever I find. I wouldn't really say that I'm clueless, I just like to leave my party slots open until I find something that I want to use.

I have EV trained a few Pokemon, but not enough for me to consider myself an "EV Trainer".


Oh, and my shiny Stunfisk is more than ideal. :<

A mostly Fun player and EV trainer. During the story I use favorites (which happen to be strong and awesome) I don't care about IVs or EVs but I try to get useful abilities and natures that don't noticeably hinder my performance like I reject something like Sceptile with a relaxed or calm nature but am good if it had something like serious or rash even if it isn't optimal.

The comic suffers from some poor choices in wording in my opinion. I think the artist would've been better off putting something along the lines of "The one who doesn't overthink everything", because I feel that's more accurate. As for the Shinyfisk, maybe he never used Stunfisk? I was recently watching a versus Wonderlocke and one of the players got a Stunfisk in a trade and he was so dissapointed, but after using it in a couple of battles it became the backbone of his team. I admit I underestimated Stunfisk as well when I first had to fight one in BW.

I'm kind of a mix of everything, besides hacker. I don't really have much time to do EV training or IV breeding anymore.

Well, it only made a bit more sense to be able to choose more than one since just because you do one of these things, doesn't mean you can't also do another, y'know? Like being a Nicknamer and a Shiny Collector could easily coincide. Not sure about being able to change the poll or not, though.

True, but I figure people would just click the thing they do most. I've belonged to all of the options at one time or another. Back in Gen I, for example, I was truly clueless, though that was partially because my English wasn't that good yet back then and I didn't understand what most of the moves actually did. I've done the Missingno Glitch, which I count as cheating. When playing roms I often cheated as well. And I have several Shinies, though I hardly use them, since only one of them is a Pokemon I actually use. Nicknaming is something I do from time to time, but I'm not very good at it, as proven in the Fanfic I'm writing. But just playing through the games without putting much thought into it is what I do most, so I clicked Fun Player.
 
Most of the times, I'm more or less like the Shiny Collector type. I tent to battle only for show my shiny and/or cute pokemon.
When I try do a serious battle, I EV train my favorite pokemon, but I care a penguin about win, I do it for fun.
 
I am pretty competitive and do breed for the right natures and max IVs and EV train my pokemon. But I mostly battle for fun and don't care about winning or losing as long as I have a good time with it.
 
I EV train my Pokemon and while I love to participate in competitive battles, if I had to choose, I am more interested in having fun than winning (wish I could choose EV trainer in the poll, as well). Online, I use Pokemon that I find fun to use, not just what is considered top-tier, and I don't really practice. I just play when I want to play and I especially enjoy playing with friends. I'm what you consider a mish-mash of just wanting to have fun but still taking the game a little too seriously by spending hours breeding for the perfect IVs and nature as well as EV training. XD

I also love to nickname my Pokemon, but I would consider that along the lines of having fun. =)
 
I only play the game not caring about catching Shinies, training them to raise their stats, absolutely not clueless since I have ''wasted'' a lot of my free time playing Pokémon and know about Type advantages/disadvantages but above all I am simply a Pokémon player. Although I must say I tended to nickname some Pokémon I captured like nicknaming an ARTICUNO* into Articuno in order to not have in full capital letters (this is until White version which eliminated this problem).
* Means that how in-game Articuno's name appeared in full caps.
