There are different types of Pokemon to choose from: Balanced/Average (Ex: 1st and 2nd gen starters), Fragile Speedsters (Ex: Pikachu), Tanks (Ex: Snorlax), Walls (Ex: Ferrothorn), Glass Cannons (Ex: Lucario), and Uber (Ex: Arceus).

Which of these do you prefer to use best?

Walls, definitely. To me, attacking doesn't matter as long as they can't take you down.

I like to use all of the different types of Pokemon to fit into a six Pokemon party for a healthy well balanced team. I also tend to try out rarely used Pokemon to see if they have a niche for my party.

At the moment I'm using a DW Banette in my party and surprisingly it's not half bad in competitive battle if used and supported in the right way.

Mostly tanks. Their low speed can be easily patched with paralysis or speed boosting moves like agility or tailwind.

Well, I'm not really sure what you mean by tank... by tank, would you mean that the Pokemon in question would need to have a low speed...? Or is that not a criterion?

If the latter is true, then my answer would without doubt be that I like "tanks" as Pokemon. I like Pokemon that can hit reasonably hard and pose a threat to an unprepared opponent, yet are able to take a few hits without succumbing; I think one of my favorite examples of such a Pokemon would be Virizion. I hate running a slow team, however... although Pokemon like Reuniclus have mitigated my qualms with utilizing a team which is somewhat slower than your average offensive team, I still enjoy having speed. So if a defining aspect of a tank is low speed, then my favorite Pokemon to use would be balanced (and Virizion then, I think, would be a member of this category?).

I would have to say either Tanks or Glass Cannons. My favorite tank is Umbreon with Moonlight/Wish Curse and Payback. My favorite glass cannon would be Rampardos. Choice scarf HEAD SMASH EVERYTHING!!! :p

I like Glass Cannons (Ex: Lucario).

I prefer the speedsters WITH the glass cannons (or tanks). In gen IV, my fav was Lopunny and Rampardos XDD They make a good combo. Lopunny with Agility and Baton Pass with Rampardos using Head Smash (or Stone Edge) can be a real sweeper.

Anything with fairly good or better ATK/SPATK and a wide-enough movepool.

That is, tanks (like Lapras and Magnezone) and glass cannons (like Zoroark and Scyther). And if one's not these, I may find some way to make it into one or the other.

I think Pokemon are bit more complex than the archestypes listed here, because in addition to speed, offence and defence you have two more properties I like to call "Mixed-offence capability" and "Mixed-defence capability" that exist by virtue of the existence of both special and physical stats.
Meaning you have five properties to trade-off rather than just the three considered by traditional archetypes.

For example something like Cacturne has poor speed and defences, but two huge offensive stats (i.e high offence AND mixed offence capability). On the other hand, it could have just as easily had one good offence, and either more speed or bulk, making it different again.

EVs have a huge effect on the role a Pokemon plays - Gliscor for example can fit most of the main archetypes depending on how its been EV'd.
A Pokemon's base stat total also affects how much can be traded off before it begins to struggle at a role - Garchomp's all round high stats make it able to fill almost all the main roles at once, while say... Castform struggles to fill any of them.

Personally I prefer mixed attackers (usually slow, or only moderately offensive) and slow tanks ( also slow with good bulk, but offensively focused), though I also favour commonly overlooked Pokemon with low BSTs who excel in maybe just one area (like Swellow or Kecleon), but can still be good if that strength is played up.

Mixed attackers/defenders can fall into either of the categories I've listed. Also, being good in speed, offense, and defense goes under balanced/average.

I like to use mixers, an example would be my Eelectross with Wild Charge, Flamethrower, Dragon Claw and Grass Knot. I like to mix the physical with the special, and always have a tank and a wall. I also like to use pokemon that synergize with each other, I've had alot of success with Zoroark illusioning Infernape as they learn the same moves, Tyrannitar and Sand Rush Excadrill, Curse/Moonlight Umbreon Baton Passing to Bullet Punch Scizor. I also have lots of fun with Dry Skin Toxicroak.

If a pokemon on my team is exclusively physical or special based, I have another that is the opposite, example Darmanitan is pure physical, so I have Starmie who is pure special. I don't like to focus on one or the other, prefering to mix and match and I have been very successful as a result

I if by glass cannons you mean fast pokemon with a wide movepool then I like glass cannons.

I try to keep a team of various things, although right now I've mostly got Balanced and Ubers.

Glass Cannons are always my first choice (Lucario, Charizard, Garchomp...)

Then all-over tanks. Those guys who can put you down quickly and still take a few hits. For me, I kinda break the laws of tanks (Feraligatr, Torterra, Crustle w/Shell Smash & Sturdy...)

Walls are annoying. I hate in-game walls (I'm looking at you, Umbreon). And that's why I prefer pure attacking power. That, and my intrinsic dislike of walls and all those pure defensive Pokemon just don't work for me. I've played enough Shoddy Battle to know that the whole "I switch my Pokemon from a Special wall to a Physical wall to stop your Physical sweeper" doesn't work when you equip your tank/glass cannon with the best move of the opposite attack type. I live to destroy defenses.

That, and I cannot ignore the power Dragons bring to the table. Hydreigon, Garchomp, Dragonite, Salamence? Yes, please. Explains why they are Uber. They are as close to Legendaries you can get without actually having them.

There is one archetype not listed here that I think should be included: Pokemon who specialize in status attacks (ex: Parasect). I like mainly glass cannons mixed with a couple of those guys.
