I was thinking about this recently. What kind of personality would you like a future rival to have?

For a serious rival, I'd like a Trainer with past experience, someone to justify his and/or her strength against Ash. Maybe not a rude rival, because we've already had that many times.

For a lulzy rival, I'd want a complete Paul clone, with similar skills and looks, but with little-to-no justification for their amazing prowess, and is always shilled for their skills and anti-social behavior. The real joy would come from the review thread of the episdes in which the rival curbstomps Ash.

A rival who'd travel with him? Less of these passive companions and more aggressive ones!

A hot one.

I mean, a girl.

A hot female rival who is slightly tsundere and causes another division in the Ash shippings fandom.
Who is competent.

I'd quite like to see a rival who is competitive, and does battle Ash - usually defeating him pretty easily, pushing Ash's team to its limits - but helps him out with training, how he acts towards his team, and would generally team up with him. They would get along with one another, so it would be a friendly rivalry, kind of like how Barry was (except a main character).

I think the lulzy rival would be good, but could be serious as well. Because, aside form the Pauline looks, that's me. It wouldn't hurt if there was astounding natural talent that was a match for Ash.

That'd be good.

I could give a few short paragraphs of what kind of rival I want by coming up with a bunch of desirable character traits from scratch, but I'm gonna be honest with myself;
I'd be more than content with Bel kicking some arse. That's...pretty much all I ask for my ideal rival character.

Alternatively? I'd like to see what I think they should have done with Nozomi. A kind (but FUN) rival that starts off nice and genuinely wants to help the Ash/Main character out by offering them advice. That advice is beneficial for a few gyms, but eventually costs Ash/Main Character a win or something else important, which triggers an argument between the two, each blaming the other for what happened. They'll eventually reconcile near or at the next league, with episodes dotted throughout the saga that focuses on their fall-out and slowly regaining trust for each other. The rival would feel betrayed, but they wouldn't be overly angsty about it, and would still be more than capable of providing some light-hearted antics.

I actually thought a rival fitting a mold similar to Conway's would be a great rival for Ash (gender could go either way). Even though the rivalry between Ash and the actual Conway was weak because the two never had any sort of quarrel (or interaction, even) before the League, the prospect of Ash being bested by a nerd who generally goes by the books and has a completely different philosophy on Pokemon and training them, as well as a different battling style (all this without somehow being Paul) intrigues me. As we all know, Ash is an idiot. Having an extremely competent bookwormy geek who isn't impulsive and potentially snarky in a classy sort of way would be entertaining, I think.

Then Ash has to struggle in the ultimate battle of streetsmarts vs booksmarts.

I'd like to see a rival who is right on Ash's level. Who, like Paul, had also traveled around other regions training their pokemon. I want the rival to beat Ash - but lose to him just as often, so that both trainers are shown to grow in skill level by the time the League rolls around. As for whether they're friendly or not - I don't really care. I might favor friendly over antagonistic, but as long as the rival is shown to have a legitimate reason for disliking Ash, it's fine with me. I'd probably like it better if they clashed over something, be it training, pokemon views, or whatever. It just makes it more interesting when there's a good reason for them to glare at each other and scoff every so often.

And I'd love to see Ash have a girl rival who's portrayed as an actual threat, and influences the plot and the league.

I want a sort of a blend between Shin's and Piggu-chan's rival - a booksmart, slightly nerdy, tsundere, but utterly badass and gorgeous girl that plays everything by the book but does it well. Oh, she must also be a meganekko and pettanko. And she must also have a healthy case of snark.

I want a yandere rival. Someone who is so obsessed in training/winning that they get batshit insane over it.

YES, MERON, YES.

I love yandere, and if my hypothetical rival was just a bit yandere, she'd be perfect <3<3<3

and now i'm fleshing out her personality and backstory and character design in my head

Definitely a female... and I agree with Aestivate, a rival that is nerdy, but is not afraid to stand up for herself or her beliefs. I wouldn't want her to be snobby about it though.

A female rival would be good. But what if...Ash knew them before!? A rival who Ash has met before, but prior to the original. That could add some depth to the series and make Pokeshippers go insane. Mainly that, but there would be a bonus if there was one thing that happened before, which drove a wedge between them and made her annoyed at him, wanting to beat him for purely personal reasons. Heh heh heh. A man can dream.

That's a pretty good idea, actually. Make one of Ash's previous opponents a rival.

Oh, wow. Where do I start? XD

I would love one of Ash's rivals to be female. I could see her having somewhat of a "Sure, I'll be nice for now but in battle I'll kick your ass." type of rival. Like, a tough but kind personality... for maybe young girls that watch the show? I have no idea. XD But, a girl rival that isn't TOO girly or tough, but maybe some anger management problems at losses here and there would be perfect... Well, in my eyes it would be.

JACK ATLAS!!!!....-type of rival. Have great knowledge and strength, use any type of battling technique (whether insane or accurate) and puts down Ash on whatever mistakes he make, regardless of size. Also have great interactions with him and progress his rival's growth whether against or teamed up.

I got a quite crazy idea, the TRio resign to Team Rocket and become the rival of Ash in the next generation,A GENERATION WITH AN EPISODE NAMED "(region name) LEAGUE CONFERENCE FINAL, PIKACHU VS MEOWTH!!!!!!!"
