What made you fall in love with Pokemon?

I think it is pretty safe to assume that the majority of users on this forum are pretty diehard fans of the Pokemon series, so what exactly was it about the franchise that made you so passionate about it? Was it a specific aspect of the series such as the games, anime, or TCG? Or was it a certain childhood memory that made you hold it so dear to your heart?

Personally for me it was the escapism aspect, the idea of being able to travel through a fantasy world bonding with my super cool magical pets was very appealing to me as a child and i wanted a real life Pokemon of my own so bad as a kid.
 
Back when i was 8, 9 or 10 years old, my step sister owned a Pokemon handbook (The Official Pokemon Handbook #2 to be exact) and lets say at one point she gifted it to me. I fell in love with the wide cast of Pokemon the handbook talked about (Snorlax especially since it was my favorite mon at the time). The anime was also a show i remember from my childhood so theres that as well.
 
Well, I've been more of an on and off fan, so it's hard to tell. When I was a kid the anime briefly became a cultural phenomenon which I was in with most everyone else :ayeaye: But that didn't last for too long and I got a different obsession soon after. Then later on, when I started trying the games, I suppose it was mostly just the critters themselves - and it got more prominent with Legends Arceus because it was the first I played of the Switch ones. I just really like seeing them walk around in a 3D open world environment and honestly that is lowkey the aspect I enjoy more than the battles and stories even. Which is also why I enjoy Cobblemon so much in its base form.
 
:0425:I always loved how interesting the Pokemon were biologically. I enjoyed reading dex entries to learn their behaviors and whatnot and just the concept of these creatures seemed really fun to me. Plus it was extremely popular when I was younger and I would trade cards on the bus with other kids who were equally geeky so I'll always have a place in my heart for it.
 
honestly, the more i think about it, the thing that's kept me a pokémon fan for so many years isn't anything specific about the franchise itself, but the experience of getting to share it with others. like, i initially got into pokémon because of a friend who liked it, and over the years i've had many good memories of chatting about pokémon stuff with relatives or classmates or professors, and of course spending time with other pokémon fans here on the forums - for me, pokémon is something that's helped me connect with people, more than any other interest i've had, and that's why i still love it even if i'm not super invested in playing the games or watching the anime or whatnot. it's something that's just so easy to bond over, and that appeals to me a lot
 
oh!!! great question!! i was a toddler during original pokemania, but i got all sorts of plushies and clothes at that time. my older cousins were into it so i got a lot of stuff from them... i don't know what really put the nail in the coffin for me, but i won a whole set of topps trading cards from an easter egg hunt when i was six so and i was really fascinated by them! then i started watching the anime and the rest is history lol. :bulbaCute:
 
I don't remember how old I was exactly, but I was a very young child. One day, I watched a VHS tape called Pokémon: Poké Friends, which had the episodes where Ash catches his Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. I heard the theme song, I listened the Pokérap, I saw the promos for Red & Blue, Ranma ½: The Movie, Big Trouble in Nekonron China, The Dog of Flanders, and The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion.

And the rest is history. Pokémon has been part of my life ever since, and I never looked back. As the franchise grew, so did my love for it.
I don't know why, but I remember connecting to Bulbasaur the most. I remember having a dream that night when someone said its name.
 
For me, the games were fun and I liked the animé series, my first full episode being Charizard vs. Magmar in the second Ash vs. Blaine battle at Cinnabar Island but what really got me into the franchise was Pokémon: The First Movie. I loved the movie and liked Mewtwo a lot, especially after he turned good.
 
Like many of the above (more than I expected) it has been my special interest since early childhood so it's hard to answer as it has been forever in my life. I've thought a lot about which factors could have helped:

  • Great designs that are cute, relatable and easy to draw.
  • Countable and officialy numerated group of creatures that are fun to make statistics with.
  • High focus on friendship, I'm someone who likes to think of everyone as potential friends so that theme connects with me.
  • Fun, simple and highly structured anime episodes that are easy to follow but that also has a linear story path.
  • Great music (the openings are amazing and the soundtrack was fire too)
  • Easy to find merchandise (for the most part, at least in my country there was a drought between 2008 and 2016).
I got into the franchise thanks to the anime, though finding all those factors in the games too eventually was good too.
