Gym Leaders typically have something they do outside of their battling duties. Some are inventors, some cook, some are actors, some tend to gardens, and some just plain don’t have any hobbies at all.

What would you like to see future Gym Leaders do? And what type would they specialize in?

For me:
And Electric-type athlete.
A Dark-type bartender.
A Ghost-type gravekeeper
An Ice-type figure skater.

I would love to see an Ice Type figure skater!

As for my suggestion, I would like to see…

a) A Steampunk dressed character specializing in Fire or Steel.
Profession: Treasure Hunter or Inventor

b) A character dressed like an Angel who specializes in Flying pokemon, with a fairy addition to it. Just like some other specialists include pokemon that suit them even if it is from a different type.
Profession: Opera Singer

c) A character specializing in Psychic type pokemon.
Profession: Mime or Circus Performer

I'd really like to see a magical girl themed Fairy type specialist (for those not familiar with what a magical girl is, the most famous example would be Sailor Moon). She wouldn't be an actual magical girl because that doesn't really fit the world of Pokemon, but she'd dress like one and use her Fairy type Pokemon to fight bad guys (evil team members, petty criminals, and so on).

I've been preaching for this for years... a Dragon type Nerd! Okay but hear me out, like a dnd nerd/DM that makes a bunch of PMD references. I would love that! I also find it hilarious that the 8th gym leader would be a "gamer"

Besides that:
A Water type Fire Fighter
A Steel type Scientist

I would like to see a Steel-type historian who wears a knight's armor. He would also be a roleplayer (think D&D) on the side, so he would be involved with defeating the evil organization of whatever region he's from.

An Ice-type figure skater.
Why the hell have we not gotten this yet?! We've had Skiers, Snowboarders, but not Skaters? Odd.

Anyway, I'd like to see a Psychic-Type puzzle designer. Specifically, one that designs escape rooms.
A Water-Type lifeguard.
An Electric-Type guitarist/musician. Perhaps someone that likes SHOCK Rock?
A Fire or Steel-type Blacksmith.
A Grass or Bug-type Camp Counselor.
A Fighting-type anime fan/otaku. Someone into action/shonen/tokusatsu stuff.
Or A Fighting-type boxing coach.

Dark type corporate executive

I'd love to see a cartographer, someone who is famous for creating the region's map. Idk which type would fit best. Flying, grass, ground come to mind.

Fire type blacksmith would be cool too. But as a low-profile, almost mundane character. A person who is a village's local toolmaker living a simple life in his little workshop.

Hmm, let's see...

-Pokémon has quite the track record of Type specialist culinary professionals, so what about an Ice-Type specialist who runs an ice cream parlor?
-Normal-Type private eye. Inconspicuous, yet versatile.
-Flying-Type meteorologist and/or professional stormchaser. (Come to think of it, I'm sort of surprised we didn't get this in Hoenn.)
-Ghost-Type YouTuber (or whatever you'd call that in the Pokémon world). Not an influencer like Iono, but someone who posts videos musing on the weird and spooky aspects of Pokémon world and who vlogs visits to creepy places, that kind of thing.
-Poison-Type pharmacist/apothecary. All the Poison-Type specialists have been ninja or musicians, so it would be interesting to see a specialist focused on the chemical aspect of "poison".
-Psychic-Type chess grandmaster.
-Dark-Type ninja/spy. This seems like it should have happened already, but it hasn't.
-This one's really out there, but a Bug-Type rocket scientist. It would both be a reference to the many, many bug-like aliens in pop culture and an in-universe precaution: if your spacecraft comes back with a strange creature, the odds are apparently very good in the Pokémon world that it's a Psychic-Type, so it would be good to have a Type advantage.

I might be biased but I would love to see a librarian! We have a museum curator in Lenora and a couple of gallery operators (Burgh and Viola.) We need to fill out the GLAM careers ngl.

(Cynthia being a historian and Shauntal being a writer with a large personal libraries doesn’t rly count to me, but they’re definitely friends of the library lol.)

Not sure what they’d specialize in, I’m thinking maaaaybe Psychic types? Fairy types for fairy tales?

Bug because they're a bookworm.

This is already a thing in fangames, Reborn has a Bug type gym leader that loves books. It'd be nice to see an official game have a similar character though. There is actually a similar phrase to "bookworm" in Japanese that is a bug metaphor, so there's a realistic chance we could get an actual Bug specialist with that theme.

Oh I know of one, an Electric-type video-game enthusiast. Gotta represent gamers, right?
Iono came close because v-tubers/streamers often play video games but to have a full on proper electric type gamer in Pokémon would be cool.

Maybe they're a fan of Game Freak?

What about a Rock-type musician, for a pun based on rock music? I'm surprised it seems like that hasn't been done yet. :wynaut:

I've had this concept for YEARS, and have been meaning to make it into an OC: a Gym Leader whose occupation purposefully clashes with their occupation (preferably with their appearance and personality, as well).

Like.
  • A femme fashionista who specializes in macho Fighting-types (I wouldn't be a coward and just give her feminine Fighting Pokemon, either, her ace would be along the lines of Machamp or Hariyama). She works out a lot in order to stay in shape for her modeling gigs!
  • A depressed, goth tween boy who writes poetry, and who specializes in Fairy types. He loves Fairy-types because they help to cheer him up when his mental health gets particularly rough.
  • A chubby, hikikomori gamer girl who specializes in Grass-types. They help her get fresh air and sunlight from within the comfort of her home.

I think the closest we've gotten to this is canon is maybe Iris? She's a sweet, peppy young girl who is also a Dragon-type specialist, but she still suits her Type quite well, and I remember being able to guess her Type specialty as a kid.

I've ALWAYS wanted for it to be a plot point in a Pokemon game for it to mislead you into assuming a Gym Leader specializes in one Type, then, SURPRISE! Once you're in battle, they send out a Pokemon completely opposed to their vibe. I think it'd be fun to break the mold a little bit and show some variance in the experiences of Pokemon Trainers!
