First time in this section of the forums, but I've had a curious question for some time. What other types of video games do you guys like to play? You can list genres, series, or even specific games here, but I'd like to know what other types of video games you guys like to play? You don't have to list everything, mind, just the ones that stand out the most. Guess I'll start things off.

Well, for starters, I tend to favor games that are either RPGs, platformer, fantasy, and/or action/adventure. However, I am very fussy about what games I play, as there is few things worse to me than buying a bad game. As I'm generally a light-hearted and causal individual, I tend to shy away from very violent and/or brutal games, as things like gore and "realistic" violence make my stomach turn. So games like Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, and Black Ops are out of the question. I just don't tolerate that kind of brutal, "realistic" gaming well. So a lot of favorites tend to be more like fantasy and even cartoon-y games. Another problem for me is that my exposure to new games is very limited. Growing up I didn't have great access to game stores or services (my most used option at the time was Blockbuster... man do I feel old). Even now my exposure is limited, as I rarely hear about new games, especially ones that tickle my fancy and are not on my blacklist, such as the aforementioned "realistic" games. So finding new games is hard for me. Even though I have generally better access to new games and stores (with both a Gamestop and Walmart withing 20 miles of me), it's still rare for me to hear about a new series or find out about certain games. Most I find are by chance or recommended by friends/Gamestop employees. So with me and new games is always bit of a learning experience. So let me start with some of my favorites.

Well, my all-time favorite series is Breath of Fire. It's an oddball, somewhat lesser known RPG series that dates back to the Super Nintendo. I found the first game (Breath of Fire 1) by chance in FYE years ago. At that time it was the remake on the GBA. It looked interesting so I tried it out. Love at first play. To this day my favorite game of all time is Breath of Fire 3, which myself and others feel is the gemstone of the series. I still play the heck out of my PS1 version and a few years ago acquired the PSP version (region-free, as it was never released in the states for that console). The only Breath of Fire game I wish never existed was Breath of Fire 5 for the PS2. It was outright terrible. I could go on for ages about how much I hated it, but let's not get me revved up on that. But overall, I'm a huge fan of the series.

An older series I enjoyed was Crash Bandicoot, one of the few game series I introduced to my friends. Man, those were fun times. Still love that spinning, fruit-collecting marsupial, but he has hit a bad rut in newer titles. Still fun to play ones like Warped and such.

Another very fond series to me is Ratchet & Clank. I stumbled upon the first game by chance when I was... ahem... recovering in a... special hospital (a very dark time for me). Like Breath of Fire, it was love at first play. I've kept a very close eye on the series, though I often got certain games later on (Tools of Destruction, for example, I didn't get until about 2 years after release, as I didn't own a PS3 for a good while). I'm slightly disappointed in seeing the series getting bit of a reboot (the reboot first game based off the movie, to be exact), so I'm hoping that was just a one-time deal and they'll go back to the current story (that and I'd like to see Talwyn again, as I ship her and Ratchet, not her knock-off from the movie). I still crack up at the humor in the games, as I just like that kind of humor, while the wacky but awesome weapons are always a blast.

The Megaman series is another series I got introduced to late. By the time I was even aware he existed, it was the Battle Network time frame. But both Battle Network and Starforce are high on my lists. I do own a Megaman X series game on the PSP, but it's so-so to me. I much prefer the Battle Network and Starforce series, though more the former than the latter, but both are fond series to me.

More recently, I've tapped into the Shantae series. I know, it's been around for ages, but I was never exposed to it. I've only heard tidbits about it, but not enough to warrant the need to find out more. Turns out, to my surprise, it's a critically acclaimed series that gets very high praise. So using the GameStop gift card I got for Christmas, I bought The Pirate's Curse and 1/2 Genie Hero. I'm hooked, needless to say, as it's a lot of fun, and like I said earlier, I like platformer games quite a bit. So it's been a big success for me.

And finally, I tend to become interested in specific games from larger series. For example, I don't care much for the Golden Sun series, but I love the final game of the series: Dark Dawn. I dunno why, but the first two never interested me, even after playing them, but Dark Dawn was recommended to me by the clerk when I was buying used games at Gamestop during their used game sale. I loved it. Another one is Dragon Quest 8. The other Dragon Quest games don't remotely interest me for some reason, but DQ8 did. It probably didn't help that the Dragon Quest series went under the name of Dragon Warrior for some time in the states, so I never made the connection until much later. But the PS2 version has always been a favorite, and I'll be soon getting my mitts on the 3DS remake. Like most of my games, I found that one by chance, and loved it ever since. Sadly, I lost my original DQ8 copy when I first moved up to the Adirondacks, but by chance I found a used game store in a mall and saw it, buying it immediately.

Now enough out of me. What about all of you? What other types of games do you like to play.
