I was thinking about making a pokemon for the sole purpose of catching other pokemon and was wondering if anyone had any good ideas of pokemon/movesets to use for this!

Ideally I only want to use one pokemon and currently im thinking about using:
Gallade
Hypnosis
False Swipe
Mean Look
>>Random Attacking Move Here<< Probably Psycho Cut
Item: Wide Lens for +10% Accuracy on Hypnosis
+++ Good moveset for anything that isnt a ghost/doesnt have a heal
+++ Good stats so I dont have to worry about IVs/EVs
--- Hypnosis only has 60% Accuracy (70% with Wide Lens)
--- Doesnt have heal block

Another pokemon I considered was:
Smeargle
Spore
Heal Block
False Swipe
Mean Look
Item: Silk Scarf (20% more damage on False Swipe) or BrightPowder (10% Evasion)
+++ Perfect moveset for anything not a ghost
+++ Spore is a 100% Accurate Sleep
--- His stats are so terrible I imagine he'd just fall over to legendarys without decent IVs/EVs

So I'd like to hear peoples opinions on what I'm considering above and what other people use to catch their pokemon (Normal+Legendary!).

i like smeargle more but you should EV train it in speed, just so it can attack first.

I have two Pokèmon, who together helped me catch the legendary birds and Cresselia:3
Those two were Gengar with Mean Look, Hypnosis, Dream Eater and Shadow Ball, and Sceptile with false swipe (well it wasn't his ONLY attack but it was the one I used).
I started with Mean Look (once I had trained it enough for it to be fast enough to do so), then Hypnosis and lowered their health till I didn't dare to hurt them anymore, I switched out with Sceptile and used False Swipe. Of course by this time they usually ran away (sleeping...) but by the next time I saw them they were asleep and had 1 HP so I just threw a quick ball XD

I used the same pair to get Darkrai and Shaymin, but reached a couple of problems there...
1. Gengar is weak against Dakrai's dark type.
2. By the time I got to Shaymin Gengar was level 60 and Sceptile 90... so I couldn't use any other attack than false swipe or it was OHKO'd. That wouldn't have been a problem if it wasn't for the fact that Shaymin kept waking up and used Synthesis when its HP was too low. But I got him pretty easily anyway XD

I use my Gardevoir, Gabriella, first, she uses her hipnosys. Then I use another Pokémon in a close level to the one I want to catch to weak it.

For me, I started using these two Pokémon for catching others after getting the National Pokédex:

Ralts with Trace and holding a Smoke Ball
Kingler with False Swipe

I lead off with Ralts so that I can see what ability the target has because I don't want to end up with a lame ability. The Smoke Ball's for a quick getaway since it's only at lv. 15. If the target has the correct ability, I send out Kingler to False Swipe the heck outta the target, then I check my notes to see what ball to use and I has a new Pokemanz! :3

I use a Scyther with the move "False Swipe"( to attack a Pokemon so that this one has only 1 HP left)and very often a Quagsire with the move "Yawn" (so he falls asleep) .

Breloom is good because it can have False Swipe and Spore (100% accuracy Sleep move) and I actually prefer it over Smeargle. I only use Smeargle because it can use Foresight and that helps against Ghosts and Double Team users (like Darkrai).

I use my Scizor that's level 62 and knows:

Night Slash
Air Slash
X-Scissor
False Swipe

It's good for chaining and for the sleep condition I use another Pokémon on hand.

For chasing the runners, level up a Bronzong so it'll be faster (like LV. 70) and give it these moves

Block
Hypnosis
Attacking Move
Attacking Move

I've got an Absol and two Sneasel with False Swipe. One of my Sneasel hatched with the move Foresight, so I could catch Ghost-types (like Rotom or Drifloon) with ease.

I recently hatched a male Ralts with Hypnosis and Mean Look... so yeah, I have the same idea with Gallade.

I use "catch 22" Breloom with spore and false swipe its called catch 22 because if it wakes up while I am false swiping it down to 1 hp and attacks it has a chance of getting a status condition. for ghosts I use my scrappy kangaskhan.

I'm working on an Absol with the moveset:
False Swipe
Mean Look
Baton Pass
and probably a STAB attack.

It's mostly for cutting down lower-leveled Pokemon to 1hp or trapping then Baton Passing to a Pokemon with an ability like suction cups (in the case of the legendary beasts using roar).
I used to use an Umbreon with a similar moveset in Gen 3 before False Swipe became a TM.

Actually, I always carry my level 100 mewtwo with me and a low level poke used to catch the poke I'm after. I'll explain; I would use the low lvl corresponding to the poke I'm after, to wack the health away, and catch it. Sometimes the wild poke faints my poke, so that's why I have mewtwo there. I would just revive my poke and continue from there. Frankly, you don't need a mewtwo, but It's just a habit for me :p

Like many people I use Scyther (too lazy to trade and make it a Scizor), though I wish I had picked a Pokemon that could learn Foresight or Odor Sleuth.

However, right now I'm using it mainly for catching the wandering legends, so Scyther's speed is a huge plus. I'm assuming I'll just use another Pokemon for catching any ghosts I don't have in my Dex yet. I realize that sleep/paralysis are useful for catching Pokemon, but if they're already at 1 HP, how much difference does it make? ._.; I've caught legends that still had 5-10 HP left without status effects. A move like Hypnosis is more of a nicety than a necessity, IMHO.

Since DP came about I've been using a Zangoose with False Swipe, Seismic Toss, Toxic and T-wave. There are better pokes for the job, I'm just using him since he is shiny and looks tight. :D

During my run through of Platinum, I caught a bunch of Synchronize Ralts (and an Abra) of varying natures. The only ones I'm missing are Calm and Careful. When I want to catch a Pokemon of a particular nature, I take the Synchronizer of that nature and put it in my lead slot. Then I either give it a Smoke Ball or KO it on purpose. I also have a False Swiping Scyther that I use if I can't catch the wanted Pokemon with the first Quick Ball.

When I was tracking down Mesprit and Cresselia, I had a Hypnosis +Mean Look Gengar with me so I could trap them, put them to sleep and weaken them up to the point where they could be caught easily (but it was hard).

2x more chance on the RNG, to make catches quicker: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Catch_rate

That said I don't use it either, Level 78 Absol, slightly EV trained in speed with Mean Look and False Swipe, was fun using it for Lati@s in HG, the poor things couldn't touch it as wave after wave of pokeballs came at them. :)
