What Pokemon would you give Ash?

Is this region specific? If it isn't, then I wouldn't know because there are a whole bunch of Pokemon to choose from. What I would say is that Ash should really use Pokemon that aren't popular/OU because it gets to show off others more. He always picks the predictable ones and they just end up bland and super powerful. Sometimes the UU Pokemon are the really interesting ones with interesting Pokedex entries.

For any region. Kanto Pokemon for Kanto Saga, Johto Pokemon for Johto Saga, and so on.

Well, the anime uses design popularity as a metric, and TPCI really doesn’t use Showdown rankings as a metric to rate Pokémon.
The 'predictable ones' sell more plushies and accessories because they’re appealing in design and it helps to gain more $$$.
In the end, the anime is a giant commercial for the games and uses the most appealing and popular Pokémon to gain sales.

In Alola, I'd like to see Ash get either Minior or Jangmo-o.
Jangmo-o because it’s work ethic will pair really well with Ash, and Minior could have great character development with a shy personality- a 'coming out of its shell' in more senses than one.
 
If we're doing it for every region then...

Kanto: Raichu (for personal reasons. The thunderstone rejection scene is scrapped.), Rapidash, Wartortle, Ivysaur

Johto: Houndour/doom, Espeon/Umbreon, Houndour because I felt Ash bonded with the one in the Houndour filler. Espeon as a contrast to Gary's Umbreon.

Hoenn: Metang- I feel a clever Pokemon would make a nice contrast with an Ash who sometimes feels that he knows better. Metang could disobey Ash when he doesn’t command an optimal move and Ash could overcome it.

Sinnoh: It was pretty much perfect imo. Only if Gible reached Gabito stage.

Unova: Volcarona/Chandelure- would be miles better than Pignite imo.

Alola: Minior or Jangmo-o
