What sort of Wi-Fi device do I need so I can access the GTS?

Seriously, I don't know the first thing about Wi-Fi, and how the GTS uses it.
Could I get some help on what to buy, and how to set it up?

I would HIGHLY reccomend buying the WiFi adapter by Nintendo. I got mine at EB Games for $39.95 USD. It works for all Nintendo DS games that use the Nintendo WFC! You just need a computer with broadband internet I believe. Mine works great, minus a few problems on my firewall's side. But seriously, Nintendo's support is great if you do have problems. I have no complaints.

Or you could just get a wireless router, in case you decide to get a laptop one day.

Easiest way to do it if you're cheap is go to McDonald's and use theirs. You jack into Nintendo's system automatically.

That involves you having to go to McDonalds, and worse purchase their 'food'.

I haven't been to a McDonald's since 2002. I want to keep it that way.
