What things did the writers do that surprised you?

This is some stuff over the 10 years of the show. For me:

- I was shocked that Ash didn't get all the starters in Hoenn when it first started. Before that saga it seemed like Ash would continue to get the starters in every region as repetitive as it was, imagine my surprise that Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip got split between the three main characters. Nice job writers for breaking tradition and making Ash's team more exciting.

- On that same note, I was equally shocked that most of Ash's Pokemon in the AG era evolved. Prior to that, we only had one evolution in all of Johto and the rest of his team stayed small and cutesy. Imagine my surprise that AG took Ash away from the small and cutesy Pokemon and gave him fully evolved or "badass" looking Pokemon. To this day its still one of his most fully evolved teams in the series.

- I really did not think Paul would ever release Chimchar. I was one of those people who used to argue against them "re-doing Charmander's story" with Chimchar.

- I never believed Jessie would win a Contest. Again, thank you writers for doing something new and let Jessie win a ribbon.

What are yours?

- The Lt. Surge reference on an episode that was obviously piggybacking off of it...I was shocked to see them remember something

Since Musashi had been passing the appeal round on a regular basis, I figured if we were lucky she'd win a ribbon at the end of the region. But then, not only does Musashi finally win a ribbon, but Hikari fails to pass the appeals round!

After that I figured Hikari would get her act together, but then she didn't pass again!

Then Musashi starting having trouble with contests, so I figured her ribbon was a one time thing. But then the writers surprise us by having her win another one out of nowhere!

So, basically this whole contest arc surprised me. I also wasn't expecting so many Rocket-dan episodes. But, the Rocket-Dan in general have been surprising.

After the bizarre lack of emotion when Arbok and Metadogasu were released, (How you act like nothing happened the very next episode?!) we finally got the reaction they should've had with Sabonea and Dokucale. It's also been surprising how many episodes they've been in where they haven't caused trouble. Then there's the whole stealing Yanyanma thing. Who would've ever thought they'd get away with stealing a pokemon? Even though it wasn't really "stolen" in some peoples eyes, actually capturing a Pokemon and sending it to Sakaki was unbelievable.

The writers have really put a lot of effort into improving the Rocket-Dan with this series. Hopefully DP117 will surprise me with something really great.

I was shocked when Ash gave Primeape away after IT STARTED LIKING ASH. I just wish Ash would have not given away Primeape

I was surpised Ash never went back for pidgeot and completely forgot about it after johto even though he came back to Pallet town quiet a few times

Yeah, its a shame that those releases in Kanto never had proper resolution.

The only real releases I supported was Butterfree and Lapras, because they actually had good reasons to part with Ash. Its a damn shame Primeape and Pidgeot never got to come back.

The outcome of the Silver Conference surprised me two times. I was certain that Ash wouldn't get past Gary, but once he got there, I thought "maybe he'll win this time", but no. I'm actually glad he lost because it's a little more realistic that way, but I was slightly surprised.

- I was shocked when Ash first lost in the Indigo Plateau. I'd only ever really seen or read of stories with the cliche victories at the end. It was a huge surprise to see him take the fall to Richie.

- When Gary lost in the Indigo League.

- Brock leaving/Brock returning

- Pidgeot's release. Well, not the actual release itself, as it was obvious once it found reason to protect it's kind, but the fact that it all even happened I guess.

- Bulbasaur's capture

- I think Charizard losing to Dusclops surprised me.

- Paul's inclusion in DP

- Jessie winning a contest. And a second and third for that matter.

Maybe some other things.

A few more:

- Ash still having the Thunderstone from Kanto, despite not bringing it up in nearly 500 episodes.

- Togepi evolving. I thought this was another abandoned plotline, thank got Togepi finally evolved even if it was so late.

- The creation of Harley in general

- May getting Blaziken by the end of her run, something I never thought would happen

- Team Rocket successfully stealing Yanma for Giovanni

- Ash losing to Brawly and going on a long training arc instead of a next-episode rematch

- Brock's Onix evolving off-screen

- Charizard and Squirtle coming back, which was a godsend since they could have been released.

I am glad Squirtle and charizard came back

I was surpised to see Lapras reunite with Ash even if it was only for one episode.

I was also shiocked to see Charizard lose to dusclops

Random ones off the top of my head:

- Mikuri showing up in Shin'ou. I was almost certain the writers would just abandon him because he was from a previous region.

- Imite (Duplica), Yuki (Susie), Aya, and Toru (Todd/Snap) showing up in Jouto.

- Takeshi's mom showing up again after all those years.

- The little continuity nods in Shin'ou, like the flashback to Musashi wanting to be a nurse in the Pinpuku hatching episode or the shot of Adan in the first Melissa episode.

- As others have said - Musashi winning Contests.

- The fact that a character as heartless as Shinji is walking around the series today.

- The idea that we may actually see all of the Shin'ou Four Emperors before the end of the region.

- Usohachi evolving.

Ash catching Gligar. I'd gotten so used to my favorite pokemon being ignored all these years, and all of a sudden we had one on the main team! It was awesome. Then they went the predictable route and evolved it into the totally uncool gliscor, but it was awesome for awhile there.

Honestly, it's more than I would have expected:
>Ash not getting to the finals in the Pokemon League (It's a serious Anime cleche for him to get there and even win sometimes. Pokemon is the first series I can think of that had it's protagonist loose, and loose so early)
>Brock Leaving
>Misty Leaving
> Egg hatching Phanpy?
> No GS ball conclusion
>Brock Returning...twice (the third time I expected it)
>Chicorita evolving
>Cinaquil and Totodile not evolving
>Bayleaf not evolving
>Corpish not evolving
>Ash Catching Aipom
>Ash Trading Aipom (even though it made sense that he would)
>Then Ash Catching Gligar and evolving so soon

The biggest thing for me was Hoenn itself.

Ash got new clothes, Pokémon that he actually trained and evolved, new traveling partners (May and Max), and better (most of the time) fillers.

Others things would have to be:

-The first time Brock left.

-Jessie actually winning contests in Sinnoh.

-The debut of Harley (never though we have a character like him).

-The debut of Paul (same as Harley. It's about time we have a rival that actually shows up every now and then and cares about winning above all else).

-Ash catching Gilgar.

- Imite (Duplica), Yuki (Susie), Aya, and Toru (Todd/Snap) showing up in Jouto.

I still don't get if that was just lazyness or continuity. The writers were still hinging on Kanto back then, so I wonder if they brought those characters back because they were at a loss of what to do with the series.

I mean really, why bring Todd back? He had no new game to advertise, lol.
