In the first movie during the infamous 'fighting is bad' moral scene. What is said in the original japanese version? Is it the same anti-violence message?

A link would be appreciated

Thanks for reading:party:

There's this whole "anti-fighting" message going on in the dub which many movie critics jumped on as "hypocritical" and "unneeded." And they're right--these people are pokemon trainers, people who make their pokemon battle one another on an almost daily basis. That's like having a Jewish vegetarian going to a BBQ and eating all the pork chops in sight.

The whole message was added by the dubbers to make the movie more preachy. Good job, you've succeeded in making the film a mere shadow of itself. You should be proud.

The whole conversation in the Japanese version was talking about how when one animal invades the territory of another animal, it doesn't give up until it's driven the trespasser away. And then everyone expresses fear that the pokemon will never give up, resulting in their deaths. Yet for some reason, all that had to be rewritten.

So basically, 4kids added some cheesy moral because that's what American cartoons do, and we all know how much 4Kids wanted Pokemon to appear American.

I don't think it's possible to laugh at the dub saying what it said because these people let their Poké battle all the time
There's a BIG difference between a regular Pokémon battle and the fighting till death that was in the first movie

Yeah...

Unfortunately, some of the lines during that dub scene were anti-fighting to the death,

"Pokemon aren't meant to fight... not like this."

while others sounded plain anti-fighting.

"This just proves that fighting is wrong."

YOU CAN'T DOOOOO THAAAAAAT! =/

Pokémon Battle =/= fighting
At least in my opinion... I think the word fighting here was used to refer to more serious fights, not to Pokémon battles which are more like sport

The true message is this: The Trainers feared that since Mewtwo's clones are forcing his monsters to fight, and their monsters fighting in defense, they will both die. The only way to prevent that is to tell them to stop; and since Mewtwo isn't doing that, he's viewed as the worst trainer of all (even Giovanni know's his limits).

It as it was mentioned in the 3rd movie, the most important rule of Monster battles is when to stop.

It was, but I think "fighting" can be vague/broad enough to apply to both situations and be taken out of context. I think, if 4Kids wanted to send this message out, they should've worded that way. (Or did what the Japanese version did.)

(Now that I think about it, I dunno if the word's been said in the anime, but there are "fighting" type Pokemon...)

Eh, I also didn't like Mew from the first movie, where he was a "good" guy. At least in the Japanese he told Mewtwo he was an inferior clone. That really made me like it less, funnily enough.

Still, that aesop didn't teach me anything. I still play Pokémon, and I let those stupid Wurmple die to my Lv 89 Empoleon's Surf! Die, die, die! Ahahahaha! That, and I still think that weaponry and arms manufacturers are necessary for world peace.

Wow. Now I feel like everything in the old dub was a lie, but I know that's not true. (at least not entirely) This is vastly different, though. I'm sure it would make the Nostalgia Critic feel better knowing this, but the Japanese is only going to matter to the super obsessed, and thus I don't think it matters.

I agree with this entirely.

I mean weren't there Pokemon biting each other inflicting so much pain?

Yeah I mean think about it for a moment. Fighting in school is not allowed.

However what about Boxing, or the UFC thing that's on spike? (which is allowed).

What's the difference?

Precisely, just like fighting in school the Pokemon here were trying to mess the other one up badly. That is definitely not how Pokemon are supposed to battle. It was basically chaos with no order. The clones forced the other Pokemon to fight back, this wasn't something the non cloned Pokemon had any choice but to fight back (except Pikachu).

Sure maybe the dub screwed up the meaning a little, but it wasn't like they were hypocritical since as Piplup said Pokemon battles =/= Fighting.

It as it was mentioned in the 3rd movie, the most important rule of Monster battles is when to stop.

And this, if you honestly thought the Pokemon were just going to stop (in the dub) when a Pokemon fell and had spiral eyes, then you're just Naive.

Pokemon Battling is just competition. Fighting with personal conflicts involved or trying to purposefully injure someone is what they were trying to say needed to be stopped.

I watched this recently and wondered why Battling ever seemed okay to anyone afterwards. They make any type of fighting seem so evil.

The moral of the original first movie was that people shouldn't be discriminated for being born different, you should judge them by their actions.

The dub completely screwed this up and turned it into a hypocritical "fighting is wrong", moral.

Isn't that still what Meowth said in the dub?

But for that matter, who was discriminating? Team Rocket uses EVERYTHING as its pawn. Sure they bio-engineered Mewtwo specifically for that purpose, but in practice they were pretty much an equal-opportunity tyrant with it and everything else they get their mitts on.
